If you shake the head, you will hear a counterweight rotating. That will be the one with self-leveling. Also, the self-leveling head will have an additional letter "D" engraved.
Basically it just transmits signals with 512Hz frequency, then if you have a 512Hz locator which can receive the signal, when you move the locator closer to the head, it will make a noise letting you know where your head is.
