  • Episode 377. Thanks to a last minute shipment from Richard, I can bring some thoughts around these excellent Irish Single Pot Still Whiskeys. I enjoy each of these, today I am drawn to the complex and layerd Redbreast 15, but certainly enjoy the berry fruit of Redbreast 12 and the wine influenced Red Sport 15. Have you had these, which one is your favourite? #Irish #singlepotstill #whiskyneighbour

    Fantastic sample lineup. Red breast 15 blew me away. I’ve only had the green and blue spot whiskies. Both awesome too. All these show how good Irish whiskey can be. Cheers Jon 🥃🍀

    Another great Irish review. I personally dont buy into the hype that redbreast receives. Its good whiskey but for what it is there are better bottles available. Of the core range the 15 is my favourite. and the only one not fake coloured. The spot whiskies to me are a better ride, variety between releases but again over casking takes away from the single pot still style. Thats the case with both redbreast and the spot whiskies. i say keep them coming

      Thanks Sean. I have heard your thoughts a few times, and felt you may be critical of the Middleton releases. Shocking how poorly the treated you when doing the Charity tastings. Just speaking whisky, I enjoy these. Perhaps cask heavy, but I did not find either of these burnt or over done. As always, just personal opinion, and clearly I do not have the Irish experience you do. Thanks for dropping in!

      @@WhiskyNeighbour I agree they are good whiskeys. And I enjoy them for what they are. My biggest gripe is when they are pointed to as the focal point for the single pot still style. That's where the casking takes away from it. But on their own and as sherry heavy drams they are really good. Cheers

    Like you, it's been a while since I've had a Redbreast 15. I have both the 12 and the Lustau Edition bottles here and I prefer the 12. Immediately on the nose, I get butter from Redbreast 12. The low ABV doesn't bother me because of the flavors that are developed from the triple distillation through those wonderful pot stills. Green Spot is my favorite for crisp apple notes on the nose and I'm also a fan of the Yellow Spot, if I can get it for a decent price. The Red and Blue Spot expressions have been too pricey for my budget, but both are on my list to eventually acquire. Cheers!

    Maybe I've burned out my palate with too many bourbons, but I have always preferred the Redbreast 12 Year Cask Strength to the either its 15 year sibling or the Redspot 15.

      @@WhiskyNeighbour I have a very recent one open, and maybe I don't have the palate to tell but it seems pretty similar to prior bottles. The new "Small Batch CS" w/ NAS is a pass for me though.

      @@WhiskyNeighbour Indeed. To me, they lie nicely between the more heavily peated Islay malts and the ligtly peated ones like Highland Park and Oban. Delightfully spicy too. I love the 10 and the distillers edition. Both delicious. I've only otherwise had the Storm, which is younger and brasher, more like a Laphroaig perhaps.

    Cheers Jon. Yet to have the Red Spot but, regarding the Redbreasts...I've always prefered the 12 to the 15. I find something tannic and sharp in the 15 that just doesn't sit well for me but...I can understand how some would prefer it.

    • @WhiskyNeighbour
      @WhiskyNeighbour  2 года назад +1

      Well, these are just samples, but for me I did not pick up tanic or sharp in the 15. Almost the opposite with the more oily or coating nature. Still, the 12 was fresher for me so perhaps that is some of the difference. Without bottles to work through, these are just first thoughts. Thanks for sharing your experience. Cheers!

    I have always wanted to try these but can't pay close to $100 a bottle, and that's just for the 12 year old, well over that for the other 2. I have some really nice Irish including the Redbreast 21 and the Irishman 17 cask strength from Walsh which is first fill sherry, put them both to the test last St Patrick's day and they are both fantastic, really glad I managed them when I did a few years ago because the prices have skyrocketed. I also have a unopened Middleton Barry Crocket which I will probably crack open this Thursday, also if you can find it check out the Redbreast Lustau as it adds more sherry and ups the abv to 46 and is in the 10-12 yr age but no age statement, I like it a lot more than the 12 but the 21 is fantastic, Happy St Patricks day and hope you enjoy the day and the refreshments.

    Love the Redbreast 15 just so good. No spots of any kind so far. Always wondered if the use of roasted un malted barley in Guinnes that gives it it's color and flavor profile was also done to avoid the excessive taxation on malted barley by the UK too? Chers Jon

    • @WhiskyNeighbour
      @WhiskyNeighbour  2 года назад

      I'm not sure how the taxation here relates to brewing. I know it is a very old law related to distilling and the inclusion of unmalted helped producers avoid some of the tax. Might need to research that!
