- Here's something I stumbled across whilst watching Steve1989MREinfo - Scho-Ka-Kola is an 'energy chocolate' product that has been around since 1936 - it's dark chocolate with added coffee and Kola nut powder - making it an on-the-go energy -boost substitute for hiking and other outdoor pursuits.
Here's a link to the video on Steve's channel - If you like it, please comment and say Atomic Shrimp sent you:

"...apart from that one time, when it did..." Moving swiftly on... 🤔🤔🤔 😆😆😆
I used eat this stuff to pull all-nighters in the library during college when I’d study for my exams. Bittersweet memories (much like the chocolate)
Art school?
Try Captagon next time….
I was expecting him to open it with a can opener
That's because you don't understand the lore. The etymology of the can opener.
It's to prevent liquidy products from splooshing all over the entire cosmos upon removing the ring pull.
Chocolate does not sploosh (at least, not room temperature chocolate) therefore, no can opener.
You joke does not make sense, therefore I dub thee Billy Crystal Carrot Top the 3rd, Esquire (magazine)
I accidentally found these in an aviation museum here in Finland. I do not drink coffee, but I do enjoy dark chocolate. These are a great companion for a road trip.
Oh I have not seen Scho-Ka-Kola for ages! I can't say it is still a common sweet at our supermarkets in germany, but you see it offered occasionally. The offical site of Scho-Ka-Kola has a tool to search for close by shops where it is in store, which tells me I would have to drive about half an hour to reach the next shop where it is available. But it is still very pricy, even if you don't have to order it via internet.
By the way - the little bump you are wondering about at 2:20 is indeed the designated, yet very ineffective, way to open then tin can. At 1:48 you can see "Hier Drücken" written on the side which translates to "Press Here".
The opening dimple is quite effective ...it levers the lid up to help with opening, but only if it does jam on a bent tin...Gruesse
Depending on where you live check out "Kaufland" in the chocolate section or at the cash register.
Some gas stations have it. Expensive but tasteful
How much does it cost in German supermarkets?
@@stijn2472 2€
After Methamphetamine was banned from the German armed forces, this became our new Panzerschokolade.
you mean Amphetamine? Methamphetamine is not the N*zi drug its the hillb*lly drug

...as a German....we loved these on Monday’s....after we had disco...and party’s on the weekend’s....always did the trick of keeping you going at work.....
My grandmother frequently used to buy these for my brother and me way back when we were in elementary school - I don't think she realized how much caffeine it contained. :) Luckily, dark chocolate wasn't exactly our favorite, so we ate it slowly and avoided getting caffeine highs.
Your videos are so calming not sure what it is exactly but thanks!
I watch Steve1989 myself, and it's amazing to see just what the rest of the world's armed forces are eating. I remember what I ate while in the Army 1975-78. Ugh...
My two RUclips COVID lockdown worlds collide! I eye chugged SteveMRE all spring and Atomic Shrimp all fall of 2020!!
Eye chugging, that's a new one. I like it.
I know I'm 3 years late to the party, but I think the indent and sharp edge on the lid there is to help cut/break the pieces easier, maybe a leftover design feature from when they were in whole disk form as mentioned. I'm going to have to get my hands on a tin to try!
Lets get this out on a tray...
Haha I know that episode. He was getting higher each bite he takes lol.
Nice
This is actually my favorite chocolate. It tastes good, it energizes you, and it’s history is interesting. It’s well worth the price (I was able to buy three from Germany for $16).
Hi, just wondering - you are from Germany/ha e you been there before? I only ask as I will be travelling there in a few months and would like to try many German foods and drinks, and to bring sone back for friends and family. Are there any foods or drink you could reccomend?
@@PriyaPans sorry you never got an answer, and I can’t really help either, but how was your trip? Did you find any good foods to recommend?
@@cordasolis I didn't get to go BC corona

@@Chezus9247 thank you, that sounds fascinating
PRO TIP: for anyone wanting to get some of this stuff
don't buy off Amazon, you can get it for half the price (even after shipping costs) from online European distributors like Varusteleka or some other
Maybe an after breakfast treat. If you eat it after dinner, you might have trouble getting to sleep.
1:23 8 pieces school-ka-kola contain about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee
Try a 30 grams turkish coffee cup :D but first, have your GP perform a complete cardiac diag, Justin Case
You didn’t put it out on a tray! Nice to see it reviewed though, I know many of the MRE channels love it :)
I can almost hear an echo of Steve from here.

This chocolate was also called Fliegerschokolade - aviators chocolate, meant to keep them awake during longer flights.
I guess the strange dent in the lid was there to help them open the can without looking at it or in the dark...
What no Pervitin????? Damn
Keks its a drug they used to give german soldiers during WW2.
Except for that one time *WHEN IT DID*
I love coffee & dark chocolate, so I’d probably enjoy this a lot
Yes if you like dark bitter only a little sweet chocolate then this is good :) I only had one taste of it when a friend of mine got a can for when he was doing hiking in the mountains.
This may just be a theory. I noticed the chocolate triangles have a ribbed top. Assuming the sharp edge is under the indent of the tin. Perhaps you could use it to in a way lobb off a piece or two using the ribbed top of the chocolate. Simply by in a way aligning the tins lid to a desired portion of the ribbed piece. Then pressuring downwards to cut a piece off. Maybe. Maybe not?
0:50 That's gold, Jerry. Gold!
Agreed xd
I love 'Weird Stuff in a Can' series 😍😍😍
I was doing a 100km walking in 24h challenge in Germany where we got handed two of these. Never seen them before. Didn't eat them during the walk since we had way too much food anyway. But I really enjoyed them afterwards. Nice product.
I think you miss spelled 24 days
Thanks for uploading. Cheers.
first time I’ve ever watched a weird stuff in a can video and thought I have to try that, ordered the milk and dark varieties
Hhhh aaa haha you are funny almost reminiscent of a boot polish tin 😂🤣😆 you couldn't Can it mate thanks for brightening my morning at 6 am seriously funny guy
I just love your voice and the variety of your videos, thank you
I enjoyed the Cadbury's chocolate with kola cube sweetie bits in it but it didn't sell very well in general so it was discontinued. It ended up mega-cheap in supermarkets so I grabbed as much as I could at the time.
Just tried today. Woke up at 6am to work a 10 hr shift ate 8 pieces 1 per hour still felt tired but I’m used to drinking coffee everyday
2 pieces is like a espresso I would need at least 2 pieces to get any effect.
Looks really good. I'll have to see if I can find it here.
That was an interesting case of the placebo effect.
It was also show in an animation video by the channel KALININGRAD GENERAL in it’s video of “Czechoslovakia without Slovakia”. You should watch it too.
It's available since recently in Australia. Both the dark and the milk.
Hey Shrimp, If you like circular chocolate bars in a can, and you don't mean a bit of heat.. You might wanna give Tabasco Brand Chocolate a try. It's one of my all time favorites personally. Ghirardelli makes a decent chili chocolate bar too but it's not as good in my opinion. also it's not in a can either.. so.. there's that.
I think the sharp part with the divot is to cut a piece into smaller parts hint the rings.
If I had to eat the whole can to have the effects of 1 espresso I'll just drink an espresso.
Back in Italy when I used to work in office was about 5 espressos per day
Trust me! 4 pieces is more than enough to get a boost!
@@Reichsritter actually espresso isnt that strong, a cup of filtered coffee has more caffeine than the normal espresso, so just stick to big cups of coffee, If you need a boost
@@BrummelLive Roasting is key. Paler roasts will leave more cafeine in grains. Darker roasts less.
Yes for someone used to drinking several cups of coffee it has to little caffeine to give you the effect you want...
I guess they make a milk chocolate version and a hazelnut version. I'm glad I can't buy this stuff easily. My guess is I would end up eating a tin of this a day.
I'm fairly sure watching Steve1989MREInfo is what made youtube recommend me this channel.
Fun stuff.
I'm from Germany and have never eaten this in my whole life, but now I'm curious.
If you haven't already tried it you can usually find them at most petrol stations.
0:48 Was waiting for it...
When I eat chocolate I am not really looking for an energy boost but I can see the idea. Usually limit my chocolate intake to Christmas and I don't feel energetic then.
This is available at my local European market. I'll have to spring some bucks on a tin, now that I know that it's STRONG CHOCOLATE (with caffeine).
Ordered me two cans the last week
This stuff sounds awesome............................
I had no idea why this chocolate would be soft just from looking at it
let's get that onto a tray!
Nice hiss!
Scho-Ka-Kola : Made in Germany since 1935, containing Kola Nut, Caffeine, and Chocolate. Allowed to sit for several years, the can could then be used as an anti-tank weapon, lol !
Sorry Česko but he gave me some nice candy.
Okay. That's why I am so awake right now. Yikes
You got the cold my poor little shrimpling
If John Barosa was a WWII veteran from Germany.
That sharp edge might be intentional to cut the chocolate into smaller portions.
I'm doing a paper on this for class. Could you send me a pic of the front and back of tin?
william benson sorry, I gave the tin away to a friend. You're welcome to snip screenshots from the video if that's any help.
I know it's been two years, but do you still need a picture? I could send you one if you want.
poor czech, slovakia betrayed him for some nice candies
Nice hiss!!!!!
$10 CAD for a can here on Canadian Amazon but it can still be had! I'm curious enough that I may have to make the purchase.
Are they no longer for sale? I can't find it at that price anymore.
steve brought me here and made me order a whole crate of shokakola... also im a smoker now. whacha gonna do eh....
This looks even better than the Tabasco chocolate you sampled...although I'm not sure I could stop at 2 segments. I am going to ask my friend in Germany if it is expensive over there....hint hint ;o) BTW...when are you off to another ramble vid?
The price is somewhere between 2-3 € per can, depending on where you buy it. There is also the milk chocolate variant in a blue can, which is s slightly cheaper.
Aha...many thanks...of course in the interests of science I "need" to try both ;o)
I wonder how the formula might have changed over the years given food regulation.
Energy food for hiking? Sounds like the German analogue for Kendal Mint Cake...
It's pretty popular among truck drivers in central and eastern Europe. Gets you a caffeine charge without having to fiddle around with hot coffee while driving.
except for that one time that it did X _ X
Scho-ka-kola is the best! :D
There is a movie made about them, "Rosen für den Staatsanwalt". Worth checking out imo.
That stuff has some pretty hefty kick, at least for a coffee-avoider like me.
Hey, Atomic Shrimp, unfortunately it's not possible to get that specific video here in Germany, it's apparently prohibited! The Steve video is what I mean.
You can pretty much post a link to any blocked video into discord and watch it there btw
This stuff has a amazing I love this chocolate
Aryan chocolate! Delicious Afro (coffee beans, cocoa, and Lola nuts come from Africa) Aryan processed Schokolade
"sorry çesko but he gave me some nice candy"- Slovakia with glorious Czech flag(obviously )
If you are not president by 2020 i give up
Atomic Shrimp for EU president!
Of what?
Have you give up yet?
Give up.
I got it. What you do is place the lid on to save what's left and push firmly on the center of the lid. It will keep the tin shut. Then you push on the little thingy to relieve the pressure and open in it. :)
I tried to eat it, now im in Wehrmacht infantry.
It's just what they served to Winston Smith
I just got a 15 second Old spice ad.

Comes from Germany yet it looks Imperial Japanese
@Thatshow ED Ah that explains it. Thanks

This chocolate was given out to german soldiers during WW2...They got one tin of this once a day or something like that...The interesting thing ia that even the pow's got this chocolate...Sadly the germans liked this stuff so much that some units started executing their prisoners right away...It didnt happen that often but it happened...I had it myself once and I kinda like it...
I'm sold, time for a Turkish moka cup :D
STEVE!!!!
Oh geez. I once found out this exists, and tried to get it at a REWE market in germany. Sadly to no avail :/
ask if they can order you a pack of 10 or 12. or check out different Rewe markets (depending on where you live) some people are lucky in Kaufland too (chocolate section or at one of the cash registers) and if all of that is not helping look online on ebay or amazon. for a 10pack or something in the price range of 22-26€ with included shipping.
Hope i could help you ;)
this is used in world war 2
The greatest two Germans who ever lived are the dude who invented Scho-Ka-Kola caffeinated chocolate and the dude who invented Ballistol. End of story.
In that case The dpr must try this food and they wont sleep in the meeting ever again (the indonesian dpr often caugh seeping in a meeting)
0:49
I bet one of those would be worth a few quid.
That would of course not be the only time Germans would add substances to chocolate.
no hiss...
Why they added that brown triangle on the can... ruined the whole design. So dumb
I agree. I feel like I have seen this sort of design gaffe before - obviously the person or team who originally conceived the radial design is no longer around, and some newcomer has just daubed their own change onto it
i bought one today for 1,79euro, not that expensive
I've had some from 'Epic Militaria', a surplus store I use a lot. (#notspon) It was incredibly good.
steve1989 is one of my favourite youtube channels. He's a cool bloke.
Didn't this stuff used to have methamphetamine in?
that's the panzer shockolade

Anyone think the new packaging make the Scho-ka-kola looks like some normal, boring kid's snack?
I thought the design was stronger without the chocolate segment printed on the lid

Mike, you’re a smart one, obviously. Hier drücken heißt übersetzt einfach Push here.
Caffeine puts me to sleep so I can only assume I'd love these
Didnt this have meth amphetamine in it originally? The WW2 German pilots equivalent to "Mothers little helpers".
Just caffeine
Maybe you're thinking of "Panzerschokolade" which is what they called methamphetamine in Germany during WW2
How much would it cost if I order it in Asia?
