  • In this video, I'll be doing a deep dive into the Sabaton Song "Panzer Battalion". I'll start with a fan made lyric video, followed by a live performance at Woodstock. Then I'll finish out the video with the Sabaton history lesson.

Cool song musically, but yes the lyrics are more crude and basic than their later works. To be expected though as it was their 1st time exploring such lyrical themes. Also they have since stated that they won't do songs about recent conflicts again as it takes a long time for full accurate reports and stories from both sides, to be available for research and to get a full, fair overview of conflicts.

This song was written within a couple years of the events it's based on, and I was ten when they released it. It's a little hard to wrap my head around because I'm so used to their songs being about events that are a bit more established and complete.

Thanks for giving it a watch, I think this one is a track that doesn't get as much (at least from what I've seen) attention from reactors, even though it's a much more recent historic event that is still impacting people today. Aside from that, as a song I love it, it feels how a song about driving into enemy territory with overwhelming firepower SHOULD feel.

If you want a good series that covers the Iraq Invasion and gives a good first person look into the first month, I’d check out HBO’s 7 part series Generation Kill. Many consider it the 3rd part to the Band of Brothers & Pacific Series (even tho it released in 2007 3 years before the Pacific) it follows in the same fashion with proper real accounts and following the real story of the men apart of the 1st USMC Recon Battalion.
Again I’d definitely check it out as many Iraq war vets conclude it’s pretty much the most accurate portrayal of the Iraq invasion and war we have

By and large you can't justifiably accuse them of glorifying war I wouldn't say but this song in particular is arguably doing so. It's cool and all but it's not as good message-wise as their later work. Tonally it's wildly different than later songs and entire albums as well. The leap from this to a song like their second to last single Christmas Truce is massive for instance.
The use of dehumanizing language isn't present in later lyrics either ("Insect of terror don't run face your fate like a man", "Driving the animals out of their holes to bury them six feet below").

They did use napalm in the Gulf War, but a military spokesman stated that is wasn't used against Iraqi troops.
Apparently it was used to destroy oil-filled treches set up to stop the ground forces.
(Not sure if it was used during Desert storm tho)

I didn't realize the Ba'ath party was in Iraq. Ba'athists are across the middle east and other Arab countries and believe in a single socialist left-wing state. Syria is also a Ba'ath party country. So being a leftist myself I am going to look into the party more and not read right wing and liberal US propaganda about the invasion but from an Arab perspective.

Musically speaking, this one doesn't do it for me at all. It has a very generic feel, and I don't feel the passion in it. That said, the live is definitely improved - as has Joakim's voice, that's a big one - since the album recording.
