I’m from Washington State, I graduated High School not long ago and I’ve been struggling with what I want to do with my life. I love the outdoors as Washington is very beautiful and I grew up camping all the time. I was thinking being a park ranger would be perfect for me! Thank you for making this video.

I have sooooo many questions! But, some of my biggest questions are:
    1. What is a day in the life of a park ranger like? Do you wake up early, get to bed late? Do you eat trail food for lunch? Do you have pets? How much time do you spend with family?
    2. Do you have to live in an RV to be a park ranger? Do you all have bunk houses rangers can use for a season? How can I learn more about living arrangements for park rangers?
    3. How do you stay comfortable outside?! I struggle with wearing the right kind of clothes, layers, and sometimes I forget to wear lotion in winter (which makes me very itchy).
    4. How much do you need to know before you can be hire able? How much can you learn on the job?

Thank you for sharing your experiences and insights! I too am (and have been since I was in 5th grade) considering becoming a park ranger (although many well meaning people told me not to growing up "because it only made $12,000/year" at the time). I have also had a series of different jobs throughout my career (Carpet installer, Underwriter, Insurance agent) and a Bachelor's degree in an unrelated field (Community and Public Health, and studied Fire/EMT prior to that.). Tired of the rat race and just want to be outside and making a difference for the natural environment and people. At 37, I feel it is finally time to pursue a State park Ranger career (Utah) within the next year or so. I have also been looking into hiking the AT, PCT, and CD. I would love to at least get one of the three through hikes before starting and seeing if I can take mini sabbaticals to hike the other two.

Jeremy, that is awesome to hear! I am excited for you. I think that all of those past positions that you held can really make you well rounded and help you in the ranger field for sure. Have you volunteered with any park service? Also, if you choose to trek the AT hit me up. I would be more than happy to shuttle you to the trail or send you a care package. If you are interested in seeing my journey/thru hike of the AT, RUclips search "Primal Aim". Happy Trails!

@@hiwasseeocoee6075 Thank you, Jeremy! I have done some volunteering over the years. I did my Eagle Scout project when I was 15 building trails here in Utah for the National Forest Service and have volunteered on and off with other trail, canyon, and forest service projects since. I have been looking into contacting the local DNR to job shadow and get to know the decision makers and see what other volunteer opportunities are available to get my foot more in the door. Wow, thank you, I really appreciate that, I will definitely let you know! I have been hearing about trail angels and trail magic and it sounds like you are paying it forward, that is so awesome! I will check out your videos on your other channel as well, again I appreciate the insight and encouragement!

    Hi Park Rangers,
I am going to school to become a PaRk Ranger, because I was volunteer at the Rosie The Riveter National Park . I assisted the original Rosies on Greet Meets, but my most impressionable reason I want to become a park ranger is because I helped assist the oldest park ranger Betty Reid Soskins and she’s just an amazing woman so she is my inspiration so I thank you for these videos because they’re really awesome and I get a better inside of what I really like to do thank you. I am currently in my last semester of my associates degree in science, and transferring into a North Carolina state school. My ultimate goal and passion of this is to become a state park ranger. I would love to pick your brain about the best steps to do so

I myself am 31 years-old, I have just gotten out of the military after 12 years in, and I've started looking at my options for my future career goals. I've started a vocational rehab program with the VA, assisting their groundskeeping department, which has really made me realize that I actually really enjoy working outdoors. Becoming a park ranger/forest tech is looking very interesting to me and watching this video definitely further solidified that interest. Thank you for sharing this!

Any thoughts on the Penn Foster Career School program in wildlife forestry conservation? It's fully online and awards a career diploma worth 30 something CEUs. What jobs could I get with that diploma? I'm in California. Thanks.

Thank you for these videos! I’m in my second year of college, getting my AoS about to get my Bachelor’s in Zoology and have been thinking about applying to be a park ranger when I’m done. However, I’m 5’2 and only weigh a little over 100 lbs and am afraid I wouldn’t be taken seriously. Do you know if any parks have physical requirements, or do you think it’s unrealistic to try because the job is physically demanding? It’s not that I’m not tough, just small 😅 thank you!!

Hello Mojo! As far as I know, there are no height and weight standards for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and for us here at TN State Parks. However, each employer is different. I can't speak for everyone. I went to the Police Academy with a lady your size and she just fine. There was an obstacle course/pt test that we all had to pass to graduate. She excelled at it because of her size. The big thing is that you are in healthy physical shape, that is all. Happy trails!
