How Have We Lost The Number 10 In Football?
The position used to be reserved for the cream of the crop in the team who was behind all attacks. As such, one had to be gifted in dribbling, passing and shooting, making such players a problem in every attacking sense. Outside of these superficial characteristics, they also had to have incredible football IQ and vision of the plays they intended to create. An added bonus that has been spotted through the years is also a Messiah complex and an ability to ‘carry’ the team when needed. For decades, the most important and creative players in every team played this position; Zinedine Zidane, Kaka, Sneijder, Riquelme, Dennis Bergkamp amongst others.
The role though technically an attacking midfielder has long been dubbed the ‘number 10’ because the number was worn by those in that position. It was called the ‘enganche’ in Argentina, which translates as ‘hook’, to describe its importance in connecting midfield and attack. As sides began to move away from the 4-3-3 of the 1970s to the 4-3-1-2 or 4-4-2 diamond of the 1980s, the ‘hook’ became even more important. In the modern era, the number 10 usually plays underneath a single center-forward, with a double pivot in behind in a 4-2-3-1 structure. A single number 10 is also used in a 3-4-1-2 shape.
With the evolution of the game, many teams prefer to use defensive midfielders or box to box midfielders in positions where the 10 traditionally used to operate. This and the lack of defensive cover from players in this position is slowly leading to its extinction in the modern game.

Musiala is a player who is a bit of a traditional number 10, but he would soon be shifted to the wings to play more the role similar to what hazard did
Rodrygo??
@@madara.uchiha655How dare you utter such trash 😂😂
@@muzahidulislam6591he's better than Vini
@@BakaryD Vini is a completely different profile than Musiala. Vini is more explosive winger , Musiala is a pure old school no 10 aka creative outlet .
musialas football iq and vision is no where near ruhe typical 10. Hes just a generational dribbler so he can play in the central
Tbh the reasoning, from my pov, is because the game has gone way to metallic and not as much freedom when playing
Coaches still let them play free
In Europe
@@dunedain3425and those european club would likely crush those team who still use this outdated role.
This can explain why in modern football we’re seeing less individual brilliance from players and we have a lot of very good players but now they tend to operate within the tactical system of their team. Football is evolving and we’ve see how managers have become more demanding from a tactical perspective it makes teams more functional and it’s creates a competitive environment for football where there’s a lot of emphasis on team play and defensive stability and balance, but at the same time it’s came at cost where you see individuals, their abilities are diminishing and you can see why there’s a massive drop off in the individual qualities of players today than it was back in the day where players had more freedom and confidence to express themselves.
Makes you wonder what would have happened if Messi and Ronaldo played in this era in their prime...

As a football fan who is older than 90% of people who are going to read this comment. Believe me when I tell you, this exact topic has resurfaced so so so many times since 1970s, and it always resurfaces whenever there is a big mega number 10 legend who is about to retire, I’ve seen it many times over the last 5 decades. And I’m reading the future her, there will be a time in which a new Maradona appears “I hope I will still be around” and he will make us believe that football is still beautiful and creative. Just like what happened with Messi. There will be always a new generation a new Messi no matter how long it takes, and people will always enjoy.
Who do you think is the closest to that right now!
@@kiarn937 We are in a drought right now but geniuses turn up when they want and not when we want and they wont be coached. Were waiting for freaks of nature as we've always done.
@@kiarn937
To be completely fair and honest, there is no one fitting the typical definition and criteria of number 10 as per now. It is weird but maybe if Vinicius became more involved in building the attack and contributed more in midfield , I think he might be the closest.
@@kiarn937imo it would be KDB. He probably isn’t as creative as past number 10’s in dribbling and over taking games like a Messi, Zidane or Kaka. But KDB is an all round attacking genius. And maybe in a different universe he does become a old number 10 if he didn’t play in the modern pep system.
But if we are talking about the closest thing to a number 10 who basically is a master of all things attacking it would be KDB at the moment. Messi is obviously still here and there’s some other players that are pretty close. But out of the best players, imo it would be KDB.

Basically football is becoming basketball... whole team will attack, whole team will defend. Up and down more than ever.
Nice analogy. Kinda sad. I loved to play as a 10 in high school. Now Im fat.

People don’t really search for playmakers anymore, if you’re fast and or tall you’re 100 mil
Seriously and as far as you can run its annoying
That's basically PL and Dordtmund recruiting lol
So as a coach, is your job to get a flair player, or is it to get a system that wins trophies?
yes so you just buy tons of black guys sit and watch how they are playing headball in the midfield for 90 minutes
Kaka and sneijder technically not the traditional number 10 like Zidane or Riquelme. Especially Kaka, he is more likely a modern number 10
Kaka wears 10 but plays 8.
Özil what a player in his prime
wirtz is a nummber 10 and hes been killing it this season
In recent games, I believe Messi's World Cup winning campaign is an example, he was given a free role and it somehow resembled the classic no.10 style
this video perfectly explains whats happening. well said!
That AC Millan number 10 looks so right on Kaka's back even though I don't think he ever wore that number while at Milan
Seedorf usaba ese numero
I don't think we've lost them, but they've just evolved. Off the top of my head I can think of modern 10s like Pedri, Musiala, Odegaard, Wirtz, Fernandes, De Bruyne, Maddison, Foden, etc
I actually think the football tactics now uses like 2 tens. I mean many teams use left and right interiors high up. And that's where you see the likes of pedri, musiala, foden are being deployed. This then limits their freedom. However, back then the use of just 1 ten, gives the player more freedom. But saying there are no 10s in football anymore is an understatement. The 10 position is no more but the players are still here just not being played there.

So you're Tell us that now we have technical ability in every position? Are you fucking kidding me???

My mates didnt called me Zizoe for nothing.. This was my favorite position because I was given freedom to play as I wanted but still more required in Defence hence I had to be fully fit.
Where, are those number 10 players the likes sneijder ozil kaka in the modern era when a number 10 was found the likes of pep guardiola changes the player to a winger or a more attaking player like what happened to musiala and the likes of klopp change a number 10 to a number 6 like what happend to macallister Bro I just miss the magic the likes of riquelme and zidane was creating in the midlfield but it looks like that kinda thing will happen in a very long time
Ozil was a treat to watch ...that calmness he had on the ball and pure magical vision . esp those Cristiano X Ozil & Alexis X Ozil duos.
With Bellingham, Musiala, Wirtz, Foden and Odegaard we have the new generation of number 10's. They are all renowned for their dribbling capabilities, but they are much more well rounded in their other abilities. The number 10 role hasn't died, its just been redefined
Football isn't as stale as it used to be. Theoretically, everyone should be looking for forward passes/runs if your coach wants that.
Salzburg oscar gloukh looks like a more traditional 10 tbh. Played there vs inter and looked good. Odegard is a 10, but is playing more as an 8 this year. Foden tbh could’ve been a world class #10 in a previous generation
Andrea Colpani also could be a good 10.
@@szveszs bros 24 and plays for a meh club. Havnt seen much of him though, but can tell hes not a future 100 million player. Thid guy above is. Hes 19 and has a unique skilset. Ive seen him vs inter and in the ucl and he looks legit. Salzburg is arguably the best academy in the world. I may be wrong about coplani though
I hate it when Mata gets ignored in such videos... The fact that people forget about Mata is also sign of that role dying, there was a time when Mata pulled a 30+ assist season and won Chelsea the UCL, while their manager was Di Mateo of all people... But no one remembers him now...
De Bruyne, Odegaard, Eriksen and even Palmer are pure 10s.
Games nowdays maybe allow less freedom in terms of tricks, but their purpose on the pitch is still the exact same : make differences thanks to their vision and technical abilities rather than their athleticism or their work-rate.
His work-rate and his versatility are only what disqualify Bernardo as a pure 10 now for example, but common, when you see the guy touching the ball, don't you feel the elegance of a Kakà? His volatil build and average pace, the profile of an Ozïl?
The bruyne evolved his game to cope with the extinct the number 10, he's now a final third hybrid playmaker/assist provider of some sort
@@KidneyJones yeah, a 10 right..
He aint got the tricks of a Zidane but they have the same position and purpose on a pitch. Pure 10s are getting rare maybe, but they haven't disappeared, thats my point
Cole is a winger aswell
It's hard to come across players with profiles like ozil and kaka
@@Ffgdchgcc just because hes on the right doesn't make him a winger. His profile is the profile of a 10 : offensive with unreliable pace, lightly build AF, great technique on the ball. He's much closer to a Zidane than to a Sterling in terms of profile, stop thinkin like you're in Fifa
I miss no 10s like prime ozil and riquelme
The role of the number 10 is still there the just added defensive duties to it
And more goalscoring
I think that also the wingers role has affected the No.10. In the past the the left winger was left footed and the right winger played on the right so they could get to the end of the field and center the ball. Nowdays wingers play on the opposite side of the field to have more shoots on goal and play on the side of the field that would be for the No.10.
Arda Guler, if the injuries respect him, can be developed into one.
Bellingham is playing as a #10 though with a more different playstyle.
Modric is actually my favourite 10, alongside Messi.
You mean the actual shirt number "10" right?
ye he means that bc neither modric and messi were 10 on the pitch@@KidneyJones
In the whole video bro talked about No 10 but ironically never mentioned Messi in it not even a single time damn
I guess it's because Messi has never been a classical No. 10.
He donned the 10 jersey, but he’s deployed as a number 7. He is more of a striker than a playmaker.
The traditional number 10 role in football is declining due to modern tactical shifts emphasizing versatility and collective play over a singular central playmaker. Teams now favor fluid formations and high-pressing defenses that make it challenging for a classic number 10 to operate effectively. Additionally, with a greater emphasis on wide play and the evolving need for players to adapt to multiple roles, the distinct role of the number 10 has become less central in contemporary football strategies.
Bruno Fernandez could have been a number 10 if he had been coached by a decent manager 😢. I think if any current player is a real number 10, it’s Bellingham
bellingham is like free roaming tip of a diamond yes u can call him 10 but its different
The fact is,if Kaka and Riquelme still playing they will be a attacking winger cause the fact now only Winger were given slightly more freedom than other roles
The last #10 I recall was James, more recently, Bellingham, Wirtz, Odeegard and Musiala
Bellingham is not a 10 he’s improvised because of his box to box work rate
@@pascho1057He has the engine to be both a box-to-box player and as the channel between the midfield and the attack - hence, Madrid’s number 10
@@DBrealmadrid9606Bellingham is not an enganche. The classic number 10/enganche is a player like Ozil. Now The number 10 is not anymore a specific role, there are a lot of version of number 10, but the pure number 10 doesn't exist anymore.
i was a number 10 in my footballing days. i defended without rge coach telling me what to do. Cruyff said that attackjng is the best defense
It’s evolving to be more all round. Just how much the game has evolved
DW Kickoff made a more in depth video to explain this including the yes/no conundrum
Literally the best position to watch, the position o made many fall in love ...
wesley Snejder was robbed with a ballon on that treble year
Kaka will thrive in the modern game with his athleticism speed and shooting abilities. He will carry the ball from defence to attack easily
8 is my preferred number but i kinda miss the original number 10
Bro needs some Belligol in his life.
De Bruyne, Bellingham and Modric play baseball
Bellingham and modric are more of central midfielders actually
@@Caution91bellingham has played cam all season, modric definitely is centrel midfield though
@@senseijed255There is a difference between a 10 playstyle and AMF
Modric has the aura of number 10 but he plays in a deeper position, Bellingham is definetely not a number 10 or enganche, he is a new type of footballer, a combination between a number 8 and number 9. It's like a false 9 but more midfielder than striker. De Bruyne is a modern number 10, not a classic number 10, not an enganche. The last classic number 10 was Ozil and maybe James Rodriguez. Maddison and Odeegard are close to classic number 10.
True modric is a10, he evolved his game to play deeper at Real Madrid. At spurs he played higher on the pitch
Sneijder in 2010🔥
It will eventually make a comeback. Nothing stays dead in football, the current meta does not include a no. 10 now but later down the line it will be relevant again
Loads of younger 10’s! Gibbs white, foden , Bellingham, eze, kudus dani olmo, Felix, szobozlai,Maddison, xavi s,musiala, odegard and even Alvarez is turning into an attacking mid!
Porto recently under Sergio Conceição has played a 4-3-3 with Pepê functioning as a No10
Prime Ozil was unplayable
props to Real Madrid for playing Bellingham as traditional number 10.
Messi was also once an powerful goalscoring number 10 under guardiola
That's the funny thing about this "the classical number 10 is dying", the number 10 was the most dangerous goal scorer in a team, with players like Pelé and Zico, then it changed to more creative players, and now it's changing again
It's tough to call football "the beautiful game' anymore. It's just tactics, ball possession, and counter attacks. No joga bonito, no fun, nothing.
Do number 10 also do main finidhing
soorry was busy , i love the vid
We lost Number 9's too.. False 9 was invented which means they both do the 9 and a 10's job, goal scoring wingers is a thing now too. The pace of the game has changed. Most teams are adopting high press or counter attacking football so teams are just looking for athletic and hardworking players rather than techincally skilled slow players that can control the tempo of a game and that is also to do with analytics. Statically, you have more of a chance of scoring when you press high, force them into a mistake in their half it will be easier and quicker to score.
Lionel Messi (10, 30), Harry Kane (10), Kylian Mbappe (7)and CR7 (7) are deployed as a 9. Haaland IS a number 9, and so is Richarlison and Jesus. Darwin Nunez is a #9 and has scored 10, assisting 10 so far.
@@GMBlunderfish1 we lost 9's as in we don't have there many world class strikers that play as a natural 9 anymore.. even Harry Kane plays deeper thenn he used to and Mbappe is deployed as a 9 but doesn't play like a natural 9. Richardson ain't world class, Darwin Nunez has the potential to be but other than that, there are not many out there. Same as 10's, Messi is in the twilight of his career. I can't even think of 5 worl class number 10.
It's becoming kinda like nba.. positions needed players to be able do many things instead of just one
the number 10 is not dead in africa. many footballing roots are very much alive in our continent. ❤
It’s only gone in teams that don’t have structure. It’s still there with Arsenal, leverkusen and city

The problem with 10s is it's a single point of failure. With 50+ hands a year, availability is never guaranteed
They've turned the beautiful game into horse racing
this is the fastest i have been to a video ever!!
Jack Grealish is the last true no. 10 in football. People would say "but he played as LW" well duh Zidane played on the left for Real Madrid.
Grealish- LW. Bellingham is an actual true #10, donning the #5 instead of 10.
Zizou didn’t lie when he said to messi u are the last n°10 I’m not talking about messi being the goat but ahhh man it’s hurt to hear that

It's possible to have a "non scripted" player in a "scripted team" operating like a trad 10 on a 3-5-1-1 tactics.
Don’t forget about James Rodriguez one of the last traditional 10

I think football has lost its soul. Lets be frank what are you paying CDM and defenders for if they can't defend? I mean most attacks usually consist of 4 players and if your not out of position you should have at 5 plus the GK back there but Morden football wants a striker to help the defence, who helps the striker? Defence should man up and do their damn jobs. High line and forcing cb to be ball players is a double edged sword
