This topic should be talked about more. Sure, special animations are cool and look great in gameplay videos, but once you have seen same animation many times it really starts grinding gears - you just sit there and wait until you can move again. It breaks the flow and no one likes when game starts messing around with character control. For me this kind of macro scale freedom, or lack of it, is definitely one of the biggest issues in the game

The floating knockdown animation is what really gets me. In DL1, when you got a knockdown animation, (such as a nighthunter tackle) you would keep falling until hitting the ground, at which point the getup animation would occur. You should make another one of these videos addressing the poor and lackluster melee animations of the weapons. The weapon swings in DL2 are so slow (especially for one-handed weapons) and lack the impact, weight, and intensity that DL1 had. Also, the prominent white outlines that follow after every swing makes the game look comical and out of place. It also doesn't help that the ragdoll physics and how the zombies react to getting hit forces them into a scripted animation rather than letting ragdoll physics take effect. All of these aspects just combined just make the overall combat between all human and zombie encounters cartoonish, awkward, unimmersive, and dull.

lets not talk about how every enemy can magically doge any attack you throw at them, use throwing knifes to interrupt them too much? they unlock ultra instinct and doge everything. trying to finish off that one annoying enemy and you backed them into a corner? they unlock ultra instinct and doge everything even though you can see the weapon model go trough them, than there is the pure jank of being stun locked to death and getting tinitus because you were grazed by an enemy.WHY DO YOU REACT SO SLOW I have red all over my screen i cant see anything i have this shitty blur effect that makes it worse you recoil back 50 yards from the smallest attack the enemies attack you on the ground while you are stunlocked but they just get up instantly if you try to finish them off. and then you look at the 2019 gameplay and all the things i listed above were false the combat was fast enemies instead of dodging every attack smartly blocked them and used a counter attack that if it hit you you would get up in 0.2 seconds from it the dodges were smooth and by the looks of it aiden would have different animations for what attacks you dodged

The melee combat of DL2 in the gameplay reveals before release was one of my biggest gripes and still remains high on my list of desired changes/ revisions. In DL1 when you hit an enemy with a blunt weapon, and they do not die the melee animation plays in reverse or recoils off the hit target. DL2 just slows down the animation when you hit a target which is better than when the game released where there was no feedback whatsoever however this still feels awkward and unresponsive. I also agree that the one-handed melee attacks felts sluggish compared to the first game. Perhaps Techland was trying to add a weighty feel to the attack animation by making it slow? I cannot speak for what Techland had in mind or were thinking when implementing certain features, all I know is that I want DL1 with DL2 graphics and skills.

    • @olivierrodriguesneto5995
      @olivierrodriguesneto5995 2 года назад +25

THe thing is there is no real "impact" on the game, everytime a zombie gets hit on DL2 an animation plays out of the zombie stumblimg to the side he was hit on (this bugs out a lot and you frequently see zombies turning to the wrong side), this makes the combat extremely unsatisfying and boring, it also means that faster weapons may even cancel part of the animation when swing too fast making the whole scene even worse (the same thing happen when you hit a zombie on the ground, it cancels its falling animation to its getting hit one). Meanwhile hitting a zombie on DL1 doesn't play any animation at all, it just applies a real physical force over the zombie, it does in fact get hit by your weapon and the way it reacts depends on the strenght of it and where he was hit. Because such thing isn't tied to an animation and jsut the physics there will always be an different reaction when you hit the zombie, also feeling a lot more realistic. I love Techland, but dear god allowing such ridiculous downgrade is borderline incompetence.

From day one I knew things felt off. It’s good to see someone showcase this. One can only hope dl2 will continue getting updates that bring the in game experience and immersive physics back on par with the original.
Another thing is how enemies can get into a seemingly infinite perfect dodging loop when the player starts throwing knives repeatedly (grapple hooking as well, at least for human enemies). Any enemy can start doing this, with exception of standard roaming z’s and maybe some of the more rare specials. Hell, even demolishers can somehow do this, even though visibly the knives would still be clipping their wide shoulders. It’s even possible with the multi-throw ability to get multiple enemies to start doing a perfectly in sync choreographed dodge dance.

Another thing is that DL2, tried to focus so much on making big buildings that they completely ignored the ground. From the moment you exit the bazaar, they guide you onto a roof and you start playing the floor is lava, where ur ability to traverse the map is significantly hampered if you fall, and failing parkour feels like a punishment. In DL 1, with a max character, it was still difficult to stick to roof tops, in the most densely built parts of the map. That imo, is what changed the gameplay loop (and the way you interact with NMEs) the most.

Another thing, I’ve watched ur past bloody summer stream and I couldn’t help but notice you stating that you didn’t find anything wrong with the gore. As a gore fanatic when it comes to video games, I must say that high amount of blood does not equal gore. I mean the blood itself looks AMAZING and imo much better in dl2 than in dl1, but how it functions is so bad because in dl2 the blood doesn’t actually spill on the floor anywhere besides the generic blood pool. This is a video I've been wanting to see for some time as I never exactly knew what felt different in Dying Light 2 myself... but after ordering Dying Light 1 two days ago because my friend got back his copy of it (and something in my heart is making me miss it the more I play DL2), this helps explain why. By no means is Dying Light 2 a bad game... but should a sequel be able to capitalize off its successor and be better? Yes. As it stands, the community patches in DL2 seem very promising if more are to come, so maybe issues like this and others you notice will be tackled. Hoping for the best.

i remember how disappointed i felt when i kicked a zombie, the kick is super slow, uses stamina, and it isn’t as good as in the first game
another problem i have with DL2 is how similar all the zombies look with the gray and yellow color scheme literally being used for just about everything

Im really disappointed with techland, DL1 just seems more natural and smooth with combat and Ragdolls that one of the reasons I come back to DL1. The gore was also awesome and gross in DL1. While in DL2 the combat just so cluncky and unnatural gore was also so wierd not as appealing as DL1 I feel the only upgrade with DL2 is the parkour and the world design. I have hope with techland they are really good company we just have to wait and see what they bring to the future of DL2

I though this physics system was going to be overhauled in DL 2, in DL 1 is practically a hidden mechanic cause the game NEVER talks about the potetial it has in combat, it allows for so many hours of gameplay with different play styles, and you actually got rewarded for playing well with the physics system. Sadly in DL 2, all this system got reduced to ragdolls for corpses, SO DISSAPOINTING.

The atmosphere of DL1 is very grim and depressing but especially scary at night time. Which is one of the reasons why I really dig the game. But it's the physics that has made the game so addictively fun and timeless in my book.
I've had my first real playthrough of the game on my PC with the graphics cranked up to max 60FPS. But a couple years ago I decided to pick the game up for Switch (which is a fantastic and masterfully done port btw), and the game is just as fantastic as it was when I first played it on PC. Sure the graphics may not be as pretty or the perfomance not as smooth. But man, Dying Light in the palm of your hand? It's truly the stuff of magic.
Yes you can play a superior version of DL1 and even 2 on the Steam Deck. But I don't have one so.. the Switch version's the next best thing if you're looking for a portable Dying Light experience.

And slightly off topic, but this here is exactly one of the reasons why I love RDR2. Most games that are filled with animations feel extremely clunky and ragdolls would be doing a much better job. But in RDR2 they managed to fill the game with tons of animations yet make it feel really good as if there is need for ragdoll, it will smoothly switch over. And the fact that their physics engine is probably the best out there certainly helps in that regard. Gotta appreciate the passion of RockStar's devs.

I am a game developer, and when dying light came out 7 years ago i sang its praises to as many people as i can and played the game to full completion more than 3 times, i could honestly say i would rather play a 7 year old game over DL 2 as it is just a soulless cash grab to prey on players love for the first game, and i don't care if i am being too harsh and critical. as a game dev and fan i am just disappointed and tired by all our beloved IP's being butchered to just chase trends when these devs don't even know what players want or love.
These are the guys who made the call of juarez series and the gunplay there was awesome and instead of trying to improve upon it in synergy with the parkour system just remove it completely why modern dark medieval times? what a load of bullshit, what made the first game so unique was you were stuck in a quarantied city trying to survive the horrors when the outside world just functions normally and that's what makes it unique like the original Resident evil games, being self contained in a small city or area, i am just rambling but the only way to save this IP is to retcon this whole game and reboot the Dying light 2 setting again in a modern city not post apocalypse and self contain it with guns, parkour, combat and stealth improved on all areas in order to make players belive in the franchise again.

@@xenomorphisisdilage472 I have been following the development of the game even before it was announced when a dev during a interview said that it wouldn't make sense not to make a sequel due to the success of the first game, but a lot basic feature and content that made the first game fun and extremely loved were intentionally cut from the sequel and a stock standard RPG system was put in place and like in thee video the game's main feature the parkour is system is not as good, responsive or fun as the first one.
A lot of the devs left the project and they lost their lead writer, instead of delaying the game and having more external playests and feedback, they just released the game and hoped it sell well but a lot of people were disappointed on day one where the game just lost its core identity, which does make it souless and releasing it such a state is a cashgrab, i don't care if you like my opinion as i am currently working in the game industry and know where they are headed in terms of passion, innovation and just making a fun good game. so i don't give a shit about what you have to say. i still support Techland for the work they did on Dying Light 1 and the Call of Juarez series and always will but i refuse to say that Dying Light 2 is a good game it is not just mine but a lot of peoples opinion. I pre-ordered the game full price and played it on day one and it was just a huge disappointment and spending 60$ we as consumers expect the product to be good but due to our own excitement and love for games we are blinded by the real problems that plague the games and are disappointed in the end.

What I loved about Dying Light was when a infected’s head exploded when they hit the ground hard. DL2 has changes but none still yet live up to the og game. One thing that really annoys me is how enemies are so quick to get up and in which case just completely invalidates the use of the head kick finisher outside of kicking virals while cllimbing. Most of the time I dropkick infected to the floor I can’t reach them intime to use it, and hitting them just brings them up to standing. Can’t even get anywhere near human enemies, the recovery rate is insane after a dropkick so it’s not even worth bothering trying. Animation locking is a other big issue, while the video provided the issues quite greatly, it very much also detriments combat. There’s nothing worse than a animation lock mid combat.

    1. I dislike animation stuns on the player when falling, it makes it almost impossible to save yourself with a grappling hook or a soft landing spot.
    2. Special Infected should be able to save themselves after falling, Dying Light 1's volatiles falling was a bit goofy so that should be a bit rarer in 2 by letting special infected grab onto the building whilst falling but this would fail if the infected were weak or falling very fast.

I know I'm overreacting but I absolutely hate DL2 because it's so different from DL1, it's not an upgrade, it's completely different game, from mechanics to the aesthetics of the game. Just to name a few things, the parkour feels floaty, fighting is not satisfying and it's stiff as hell, there's no satisfaction of hacking zombies and humans to pieces, in the first game you could split an enemy zombie or human in half VERTICALLY, because of this weapons in DL2 feel like shit, there's no interesting weapons, there's no ranged weapons (besides crossbow), zombie presence is also reduced severely, there's no open areas with shit ton of zombies to just plow through like in the first game, fighting humans for me is actually more tedious than in the first game because you have to abuse one move over and over and it gets old really quick. If you liked this game, good for you, but for me it was more of a downgrade than an upgrade.

DL2 be looking like the remastered original, DL1 still looking like the masterpiece it always has been.

Has this been changed with the new update? I heard many people talk about the various improvements it allegedly brought.

It’s improved, but still not in a great state.

@@AussieGG Thx, a couple of friends and I were planning to try it out, but then we might wait on it a little longer. Your video really reminded me of how satisfying the physics in DL1 were.
