You don't honor the war dead of a democracy by forcing people to wear something on their lapel or shaming them if they don't. The best way to honor the fallen is making sure you have a damn good reason next time there's a war to send people to die and to take care of those who are wounded when they do come home.
Rachel is certainly a good speaker, she puts her points across well; I don't agree that the Poppy Appeal in any way glorifies war--it is, as a now deceased World War Two veteran once said to me, remembering the horror of it, and praying that we won't ever have to do it again. I always get a poppy, and I do wear it with pride; I respect unreservedly anyone's right not to, if that is what they prefer.
a glorification of war wow she know nothing about the sacrafice we make and made. You dont have to wear it but take a moment to remember who sacraficed their lives to give you the right to speak against the vets you deride
I’ve read fifty books on WW1. I put up a little memorial at school on 11/11. It has a white cross like the wooden crosses of WW1 and a peace dove next to it. We put poppies around it. We have the words “war” and “peace” there. ThAts it. No speeches. I guess it’s meant to prompt reflection. I too hate the way the professional Defence force has taken over Renembrance and Anzac Day. The whole point of WW1 was these guys weren’t career soldiers. They were regular bakers, farmers, teachers, coppers caught up in something huge and devastating. I could wear a poppy or not wear a poppy. She’s right. What’s a minutes silence actually for if you’re not remembering someone you loved who was killed? Meanwhile the war industry just rolls on. Maybe in lieu of poppies we should picket the war manufacturers.
This debate is a pointless one, there is really not much to debate. Those that want to wear a poppy (whether because they are genuinely pro war or just want to "honour" the dead) can wear one and those that don't, ignore the "death threats" (made for saying anything on any public platform) and do your own thing.

Maybe us remembering the last big war gives us reason to not run off and start another.
WW2, Burma, The Falklands, Iraq 1 and 2......but yeah, maybe....
@@fibbsabaddyyup, it could’ve been many more. So it’s working
In rather glib fashion this woman totally ignores the fact that the poppy appeal is,first & foremost,a charity set up to care for veterans of wars.
Veterans from wars after ww2 deserve no charity
@@maherzain434they do! Because people want to praise them!

What an awfully constructed argument... Jeez a GCSE level student could have done better...
I was offended before she even started her speech properly.
Remove the fifth column
She was destroyed,.
It's no wonder the motion was defeated when the proposition has such weak speakers. The one before her was the worst.
