for me, BEST VIDEO in the first forty-nine - what a great combination of technical (locks), life-on-the-canal, and pretty montages of the lovely spring-summer weather with ducks and ramblers and dogs! Perfect!
Great series of 'blogs'....much appreciated! I'm a middle aged bloke about 1-2 years away from returning to the cut and this series is brilliant! Thanks David....keep them coming!
Many thanks, keep them coming, great to watch. Any chance of some more of your daily and evening life on board the boat. Cooking, cleaning, reading, watching the telly as light fades outside and your interior lights come on, drawing the curtains, preparing for bed , then getting up making breakfast, preparing for the days cruising etc.Its the small things of unusual lives that can be fascinating I think.
It was nice to hear from you again and to enjoy the scenery montage portions of the vlog. Thanks for sharing. And thanks for the dry humor, showing the little café where two staff ignored you. Good stuff, that. You seem to be enjoying your life, as I would hope you would, and making the most of it. Locks like fun.
What a great vlog! Such an appealing way of life, and you present it so well. I enjoy your dry sense of humor, too. I look forward to vicariously traveling with you on many more occasions.
I'm sure there are wrinkles and drawbacks, but what a lovely life (at about 2 1/2 miles an hour!) I seriously considered selling up and moving to a life on the canal when I retired, but being in my sixties and NOT fleet of foot I decided that locking on my own would be a no-no. Anyway another excellent and most enjoyable vlog. Can't wait for the next !
Well done with negotiating the Hatton Flight. At least you had a partner to assist. I like the spur at Budbrook Industrial Estate, Stopped there too. A wonderful film today - love the montage! Thank you again for a lovely day
It always amazes me how you can have multiple camera recording for hours per day, and _somehow_ you manage to get a clean and precise -10 minute video out of all of that. Whereas amateurish me records with one [web]camera, and keeps almost all the footage in the final edit except for small things like clearing my throat, false starts, and staring at a detail on something. I'm jealous of your editing skill in this matter.
I've never measured it in hours per finished minute but a typical vlog takes me about 8-10 hours to create (excluding filming) so yes, I suppose you're about right!
Okay - I've - read the FAQ'S - will stop skipping adds. And here is me always wondering why anyone would binge watch tv series - 48 down hundreds to go.
Hi there. I am enjoying your videos very much. The short, concise commentary says it all, no flowery garbage, just what the doctor ordered. Here in Canada we don't have canals like Britain, our waterways are wide and join lakes where the water can get quite rough, does not bode well for flat bottom boats. The scenery in England is so tranquil and pretty and the pubs, ahh, for the next pint. I was originally from Somerset. We have a saying here the a boat is a hole in the water you pour money into. Fair analogy I think given your expenses. Keep them coming mate, they are great.
Another great Vlog, such a relaxed way of life, even it you do have the pain of the locks, but well worth it I'm sure, really like the views of the country side and the old homes etc., being from the US of A it's a view into a different world, keep up the good work and looking for the next one, Cheers
I am thinking of Hyacinth Bucket and her finger buffet with riparian entertainments and the extreme struggle with the locks. Great videos, thank you for sharing your amazing life with us.
I've gone back to watch a few vids and listen to the hauntingly beautiful theme music. As a guitarist, I've been noodling around trying to play it. My poor wife has sighed more than once as I butchered the tempo. Ah, retirement.
I absolutely love this vlog and the information is very useful. However, I will confess to watching them primarily for the scenery montages. There is some staggeringly beautiful countryside along your canals.
I do love your videos. Indeed done the first 49 in 2 days!! I’d like to add, a cheese sandwich, always tastes better when cut as a triangle in my opinion. Please try. Keep up the great work and lifestyle
For some reason, we are intensely fascinated by all of these wonderful little do-it-yourself locks. We traversed 17 locks on a river cruise in Russia several years ago, with some drops as much as 50 feet! We're sure those locks are not self-service though! If you have a video that we've so far missed, where you show in more detail exactly what the entire process is like of operating a lock from entry to exit, please do let us know. Thanks David!
I did do one, not very good in hindsight, but can't remember the vlog number offhand and am about to run out of mobile data (dammit!) so will post later!!
I came across your videos and am rather enjoying them. I've made it through 49. After so many the music is becoming rather dull though. Just the other night I fell asleep during a montage, ha. Thank you for your efforts! Cheers
Looking forward to perhaps sharing a lock or two with you one day! Through watching your videos its inspired me one day soon moving to the water, thank you for inspiring my adventurous spirit!
As usual, a great vlog! I'm looking at them in a new light as we've just bought a narrowboat and intend to give continuous cruising a go starting in the spring of next year. These are now compulsory education vlogs! Keep up the good work.
Ah thanks for the reply. Yeah didn't think you had been 'out there' from following your vlogs........have to do it at some point as it's the only way from here to the canal system! unless we are piloted around the other way to the Avon.......no thank you at this stage! We're trapped ha ha!!,! Do have someone to come with me but not experienced either but two better than one on the river I'd say! Happy Cruising! Hope you're not getting too wet in this lovely British weather!
Why don't you try Vuollerim? Some 140 km uppstream the Luleälv in Sweden. The curren aroun 5 knt. No locks! But you have to carry your narrow five times! The lowest lift some 5 m the highest approx 30 m. I'll have a cup of tea for you when you arrive! By the way. I like your vlog!
It was only missing tomato which is they other key ingredient but I didn't put it in earlier in case the sarnie went soggy. Nothing as disappointing as soggy bread!
Sir Ed was a kiwi and so am I, (7 min 40 sec or so) and when he got down from Everest he proclaimed... "We knocked the bugger off." Did you do the same with that lock or did you just bump into it? Love the series, especially your early stuff. Nice attitude to a new way of life.
Lovely video once again......am I right in thinking, you might have lost a little weight? All the work, opening & closing the lock gates, keeps you very busy!
Another great Vlog :) Now you've been on the cut for a while, how about one on how its been, how you've adjusted from land to water, what has been better than expected or a bit of a let down, how you've been getting on with the internet usage as im sure you watch other youtube channels etc.. and whats its like to live/stay in the middle of nowhere in what must feel like a black hole at night :D
Another great Vlog.......I'm trying to pluck up the courage to go past the lock at Gloucester Quays and venture out on to the River Severn but a little nervous.....any tips ??? I moor on the Glos & Sharpness Canal and just go from Sharpness to the Quays and back again.......quaint!
I'm probably the wrong person to ask, alas - I have yet to venture onto a river, preferring to get used to the canals first. I suppose my tips would be don't do it solo the first time, get someone else along to help. And, of course, make sure the river's not in flood or likely to be. Take a charged mobile phone and have a life jacket on maybe. Good luck!
As always it's great to see the canals and countryside looking lovely. The drips on the solar panels made me wonder how they are performing. Do you have one of the controllers that allows you to see their contribution in relation to what you get from running the engine?
Do you sit with your evening tea and think up these pithy, punny titles? Love them! I find myself looking forward to the next video partly for that reason. lol ;)
You should send the CRT a letter typed in teen tiny font. As for trying to read them from the boat, you could take a photo with your phone and then pull it up and zoom in to read 😳
Such a lovely stretch of canal. I did notice at 5:01 and on a few other locks on the stretch, there's a smaller canal to the side of the lock. I wonder what these are. "Eat, Drink, Allday" looked rather tempting, by the way!
Hey David, I mentioned in another comment (on a different vlog) that I'm hoping to get my own narrow boat here in Ireland next year...have to say, the thoughts of going through locks (I'll be by myself) is freaking me out!!! I get so bloody anxious just watching you go through them :p That being said, Ireland isn't very liveaboard friendly (seemingly they're trying to outlaw it) and locks aren't made for lone boaters (many of them don't have ladders, so it would definitely be a 2 person job). Not letting that put me off 'though....as they say (whoever 'they' are) were there's a will there's a way! ;)
Thanks, I'm planning on doing a 1 day course closer to d day so that should help with the nerves! I believe a lot of locks are manned, although not all. I'm sure I'll be grand :)
im very much enjoying my choice to start on your videos during my narrowboat youtuber binge, by popular demand from most of narrowboat twitter. very well executed and this is fpur years ago - the newer ones will surely be even more so. by the way, i'm sorry for the bad experience you had at hatton's cafe, i promise theyr'e not normally like that!! i enjoy a visit there from time to time.
@@CruisingTheCut it's nice to come along, currently watching you cruise through Stoke-on-Trent in 2017. really enjoying it so far! thank you for your hard work. :)

Re; The wide brimmed hat look - a bit like a pretty young Dame Edna Everage Me-thinks ;-) Plus! ... I think everyone who manages to navigate that set of locks should get some sort of medal at the end ... if only the CDM ;-)
What the etiquette with the double mooring? Assuming you're not blocking the waterway Is it allowed anywhere? Do you have to ask if it's ok with the boat already at the bank? I've seen them 3 deep before, how does that work in practice?
Yes, allowed anywhere if you're not in the way. Etiquette suggests you should definitely ask first and equally that you should be accommodating of people asking you. Having so moored, one should also be considerate eg not running the generator, playing loud music, constantly stepping across the other boat and rocking it non stop etc.
I have heard you mention several times about emptying the toilet cassette but nothing about grey water. Does grey water go to a tank to be pumped out later or do you dump it in the canal?
Hi, I only top up the tank every few months and there's no actual shortage of fuel as such, just of truck drivers. While marinas do get supplied by tanker, I think they'd be so infrequent as not to be an issue, it's not like a petrol station where they need daily refills.
Does the winter cause freezing in the canals? How many months of the year is there open passage? How many miles of canal are there? Canals are rare in he US, so I am most envious.
Been following you for a while now. Definitely decided to purchase a good livable narrowboat and cruise the entire waterways of England. Do you think I should video the life I am going to live?
Even your most high tech and modern tunnels have problems with seepage, but when your talking about brick lines with several meters of rain saturated soil above your head, seepage is unavoidable
Is there a gauge to show the water level in the water tank? How do you know when to refill? Like others, I've been binge watching your videos. Your TV journalism skillset is definitely shown
I don't have a water gauge but more modern boats do or they can be retrofitted. I just know how long the tank lasts me on average and fill up every week or two.
They have a fair few dotted around the network but they are also closing quite a few and amalgamating them for example the one at Fazeley has now shut.
"Where the two staff members ignored me......" Love it! Like your style, Capper-tain!
Thank you
Scenery montages and all the rest EXCELLENT. Commentary PRICELESS

Luckily they moved on a day later. One one point the bloke started polishing his boat using mine to stand on (and rock) as he did!!

Approx 2,000 miles. Yes they can freeze. There are stoppages all year round but the main closures are Nov-Feb.
Is there any part of owning a narrow boat that dislike.
Mary Burt The cost of buying new gear for it maybe? I'm hoping I've largely done with that now I've got things the way I want.
another great vlog ,geesh 22 locks, how much of a drop total?
21 locks; according to Wikipedia, that totally reliable source, it's 45m drop / rise.
Hatton Locks done them twice quite a few years ago wore me out both times.
Been following you for a while now. Definitely decided to purchase a good livable narrowboat and cruise the entire waterways of England. Do you think I should video the life I am going to live?
Good luck with you decision! Videoing is entirely up to you.
I totally understand, lottery wins keep missing me as well. But I keep trying, lol.
Nice ! What is it with the two "ski" sticks that some walkers carry ? Are they expecting a difficult climb ? Weird..
Actually, the walk up Hatton locks is quite steep in places!
Something I've been meaning to ask; where does the water come from in the tunnels ? Do they go through a hill or is it seepage from the water table ?
I've truly no idea. That's one to ask the Canal & River Trust.
Even your most high tech and modern tunnels have problems with seepage, but when your talking about brick lines with several meters of rain saturated soil above your head, seepage is unavoidable
In the days when this flight of locks was build... not like building a cathedral but a bit the same. When it was al finished life changed.
6:43 Hehe that's definitely not an octopus... It's a very cute marijuana leaf :) Another absolutely stellar vlog, I'm slowly catching up to you!
Lol
The CRT must have a lot of offices!
They have a fair few dotted around the network but they are also closing quite a few and amalgamating them for example the one at Fazeley has now shut.
