A little worrying to see a truck that has taken so many years to develop and release hit the ground with a major issue like that. I'm gutted, to say the least! I really want this truck to be a great gas truck and to be my first gas truck, but I fear it may be a while before I should even consider it. I REALLY hope HPI take note of what is happening with it and address the issue with the upmost urgency. I'm sure they will not sit on their hands with something this crucial, so I look forward to the resolve and to future running videos of this awesome beast. Good luck with everything, Chris. Talk soon buddy.
Thankyou for your reply and yes im going to watch as much videos and get as much info as I can about the octane before I start it its just finding time atm with work and stuff
Sorry to see you having troubles Chris, it always happens to the nice guys. You think this is bad you should have been a mechanic for Chevrolet when the Citation first came out! LOL I know I'm old. I'm sure HPI or you will get it corrected. I almost bet you they send you a complete new motor when you get a hold of them if you never get it corrected on your own. Engineering loves to solve problems after they create them, it keeps them employed. Good luck and please keep us posted with any new news.
I think I remember reading something about running high test gas only in RC car action mag. Don't have a clue if that is the problem but might be an idea. Look forward to seeing that thing running rite.
I ran it on 98 unleaded, which is the highest available in my area. Everything over 92 should work fine. I'm pretty sure it's the ignition module. You'll see it run correct as soon as it's sorted! :)
Hey Chris, being on the cutting edge of any sort of technology can be a pain in the ass but I'm sure you'll get to the bottom of it one way or another, great vid and the it certainly looks and sounds good when it is going.
Thanks Jim! We've put in a lot of work into the house and yard after we moved here, but it's paying off. And it's such a nice place to kick back with a cold one after getting impatient with an RC. I have it up and running now, this is an impressive ride.
Looks an awesome piece of kit but still not lured out of the electric camp just yet it still looks a real pain to me top video buddy despite you smiling could really see the frustration on your face. Cant wait to see that fully sorted balls out bash video it will be a beauty for sure
seems like there is a short somewhere, check the ground wire and the switch make sure they are all making good connection and no loose solders on the on off switch for the firing system, if it still does it, I would say bad soldering on the board for the firing system and it needs to be replaced, more warranty work for HPI
Hey Chris. Alright, regroup have a smoke and a beer. I have some advice for you although I have never owned a savage Octane or a 15cc 2 cycle. I do however have a lot of experience with nitro motors and i'm a certified small engine mechanic and I work on 2 cylces everyday of my life and I own a losi 5t and put my knowledge to good use. I have a few pieces of advice for you my friend. First off , my experience with nitro motors are that they all have air leaks. If you dont seal your engine right out of the box it will never run right. Same goes for my 5T. I sealed that motor and replaced the head gasket with a copper right away and it tunes and runs great. I do know that if one of your crankshaft seals are leaking it wont idle worth a shit just like its doing to you. Sometimes on a small engine the rubber crankshaft seals will blowout or leak or even could have been installed improperly from the factory. This will make the engine start up and run high speeds but wont idle. I think you mght need to pull the engine and look it over. Hope this might help you and hopefully it will make tuning a breeze in the future. Look foward to seeing more from you dude!
Cheers Chris! Engine is getting taken care of currently, more issues to take care of at the moment when I write you this. I'm hoping it will be back, and running as it should sometime next week. And I will punish it for its insolence! ;)
Chris, I bought an octane and I think I might know what is wrong with yours, check the little magnet sensor that is on the flywheel that is used for the timing, if its loose it wont run right and that might be the problem on your truck, its just a thought, but one I think is worth sharing, hope it helps!
HemiStorm RC - Custom RC builds, painting videos and more So the Problem with your octane has been solved? will you be updating the series on the issues you had and why they happened? im interested in purchasing an octane and would like to know what to expect to adjust so i can run good. -Adrian
In all the videos I've seen so far on this truck I noticed the lack of smoke coming out of it. I think you've got it to lean. The pitch also sounds high of the exhaust note. it will have a deeper sound when you richen the carb up quite a bit. Rome wasn't built in a day and I think this one might require a little bit of patience on this one or they better make one hell of a brushless conversion for it.
Hallo hemistorm. Ik heb ook pas een octane gekocht , alleen bij het 3e tankje valt hij uit bij stationair Dus als ik die hoger zet zou hij het moeten doen toch. Nope ook niet . Heb jij hier een idee over .
I speak English not well What is the default setting of the carburettor? is it H : 1 turn from closed L: 1 & 7/12 turns from closed or H: 1 and 1/2 L: 1 and 1/12
Hold up. Maybe it's stopping because it can't draw enough fuel to keep it going? Maybe the ignition system is not timed correctly and it's not firing to keep it running?
HemiStorm RC - Custom RC builds, painting videos and more Yea man my main mode of transportation is a 50cc Vespa that I built from the ground up. I know my 2 stroke stuff. Knew the moment I heard it. I was hearing a long "light". where it was firing off-beat and causing the whole engine sound to be drawn out. On my Vespa it was doing that and you could hear it draw fuel, then fire. It was very noticeable.
HemiStorm RC - Custom RC builds, painting videos and more oh man you would love mine. 50cc, custom bodywork, custom trim and chrome bits, custom LED headlights and a custom tuned pipe my friend made me. Thing sounds like a mad bull and looks good doing it.
Mine was doing Exactly what your is, But after 6 Tanks it started Running Better, I working on the Transmission so it will start sifting better. Are you getting alot of like Oil Residue near the motor also ?
Love the video, Cool house and you've made yourself a peaceful looking yard area and playhouse ...What do you think about it's durability look, stock chassis and shock choice set up, and how is the wheel/and mainly 'Tire construction choice?
Hi Steve! Thanks buddy, we really enjoy living out here. The chassis, arms and shocks are (with the limited time I have on them) very nice. The car drives like a flying carpet, rolls nicely in the corners without the tendency to flip. As soon as the engine runs right I'll report further.
Thanks for your quick reply....and by the way, I wore my HemiStorm t-shirt with the Dodge Cuda Drag Car the other day with pride, and I have had several compliments on it. ...Thanks, Steve
I hope you can work it out. Probably just some new product growing pains. I'm no math wiz, but I have never heard of a 7/12th fractional???? that is in the carb tuning addmendment. I wonder if that's a typo?
I don't mean to be funny, but it will not run if it isn't running right. Be real gentle on needle adjustments, have a look for the latest HPI running tips so you set the needles correct and get one or two spare spark plugs to get you through break in. A lengthy, correctly executed break in sequence will give you one hell of a truck.
hpi is breaking my heart lol,but the first run of any cars there is always bugs to fix. I TALKED TO A FEW GUYS WHO TALKED TO HPI!! there guess is its the pick up for ignition or ignition box. so your hunch was right.

yeah probably something really simple like a seal or valve not seated properly. shouldnt happen on a brandnew truck im sure youll get it sorted. good luck bro!!
Hi David! I think it's some minor issue too, but thankfully HPI has good customer service. They haven't let me down in the past, so I'll just await their reply.
Wow do I ever feel your pain... Everything looks right...Should be right... but nothing works.. I'm convinced there is a special little RC ghost that flat haunts some cars! Love the vids my friend...Subbed... I just setup a new channel myself. If you get a chance (When your not having to tune that car) ... take a peek and let me know what ya think! ;)
Hello Joe! I hope you're having a ton of fun! The frustrating parts you see in the video can occur, new cars with new technology can cause issues, but it's all to make the hobby evolve and get us a step further in a new direction.
I agree, I love fixing the RCs as much as driving them. Someday I move to gas but for a newbie like me electric is a perfect starter to learn on and then move on up. lol
Hi dude, nice vid and huge greetings from Norway.. So I just bought this and already had it on a return to the shop due to some issues. Bought mine at Elefun and it is scheduled to arrive back in a couple of days. They said the only thing they did fix where tuning the gears and fully charging the batteries. The latter part got me really confused as I did (so I tought) charge them fully according to the manual using the included charger for approx 6 hours. But it did got me thinking, did I do It correctly as this is my first gasoline car (Had a Emaxx 1/10 before).. So I applied my new charger to the only plugin contact I found in the tiny compartment and set it to charge according to the spec on the battery. Did so in about 10 minutes (as I did charge it the day before, keep in mind this was before I sent back the car.) Nevertheless, after a couple of turns the stearing halted and the throttle stopped working, so clearly a reciever issue. Anyway, now the car is on its way back ETA on the 17th. Kinda wonder if you had any take on how you charge the batteries on this car, might do a short segment on charging, fueling, recievers and such?? Please! Anyway, love the vid and did now subscribe to the channel.. Keep the videos up on this car, I need this bad boy to work and be enjoyable and I think you would agree!.. Kind regards Tom

HemiStorm RC - Custom RC builds, painting videos and more Are there options to replace the original clutch with an upgraded version? I just purchased one of these HPI Savage XL Octane RC'S today, used but in mint condition & was broken in properly, I hope if I have any issues, it's minimal..
Beyler, size bir ricam var. Oktan ateşi 15 tank. 2. vites yavaşlar. ve motor boğulur. Bu yüzden oktan hızına ulaşmıyor. 2 vites geçtiğinde ölür. Lütfen bana yardım et: /
This is noisier for sure! Got it up and running, new engine, new manual, no rules or guiding, given a chance this engine will revolutionize the 8th scale game.
Have you been close to one running...? This is the LOUDEST rc on the planet, no joke. I own 7 large scale RC's, they are all quiet compared to this one.
I understand its loud but if i felt like i had to wear hearing protection...specially that degree of hearing protection..i would not only not want one of these myself but i wouldn't even want them to sell them...im not one of those people that gets mad when a loud truck/car/bike drives by my house or anything but that is ridiculous...and if they truly are that loud they aren't gonna do anything but annoy people and give the hobby a bad name in every neighborhood that has one...
pugs2300 During break in, you're close to the car quite often. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the GBE Endbleed that we ran on our HPI Bajas back in the day, but this thin is louder. And we baptized the Endbleed "Earbleed". Although I fully agree that in the wrong hands this car will be the cause for a lot of complaints, in a way I understand it is released as it is. It's a monstertruck. They're obnoxious, they're in your face, they are ridiculously loud, they pulled that off! For me the exhaust note is a bit too loud, anyone having seen one in the flesh will agree that Peltors are no luxury. I've seen a friend of mine hook up a JetPro silencer to his, reducing noise with about 70%, and I think even HPI has something in the works as the tip of the exhaust is threaded. I guess we'll just have to wait and see! :)
KillerRC Dude i was not talking to you....or telling him not to wear ear protection...all i said was that if this thing is so load that it requires ear protection then i wouldn't even want it...and that i think an Rc that loud would hurt the public opinion of our hobby instead of help...its my keyboard, ill type what i want to.. also by your logic...they're your eyes, if you don't want to read a comment..don't.....

Hi Vas, as soon as it's all good, you'll be the first to know! ;)

I haven't seen a gas RC in my life.
Thanks for being so honest with your followers !
Hope you get to solve the octane problems.
Best wishes from Colombia
Hi Felipe! Honesty first, I'm sure it's a minor issue, and it will get figured out.
Thankyou for your reply and yes im going to watch as much videos and get as much info as I can about the octane before I start it its just finding time atm with work and stuff
Awesome first run video chris. hopefully you can get all the kinks worked out. so you can really enjoy this beast
I hope so too, Johnny! Really excited to give it a proper testing!

I have faith in your determination...but do make sure you're stocked up with cold beer!
P.S. Your home and yard are wonderful ! Beautiful scenery!!

When trouble strikes.....get s beer! :) You would hope HPI had sorted out all the gremlins before its release. No doubt you will get it running asap.
Absolutely, as long as the sun shines, all is good. I consider myself part of a huge test team, haha!

Thanks for watching, I'm sure it will be up and hauling within a few days!
Despite the issue you had, it was a pretty exciting ride, it looks like so powerful :D

I hope you can work it out. Probably just some new product growing pains. I'm no math wiz, but I have never heard of a 7/12th fractional???? that is in the carb tuning addmendment. I wonder if that's a typo?
Not a typo, I needed to look twice too, haha! Tuning happens in 1/24th increments, so the carb is extremely sensitive on an engine this size.
Hpi just posted a bunch of vids about savage octane, and i think one of them was called: what to do if ur engine wont start or something like that
My first time out with an Associated 8.2 Nitro was also horrible..found out, major air leaks throughout the entire motor.
Hi Chester, that's very unfortunate. I'm sure I'll figure it out, just takes some time especially with the lack of info, it being a new rig.
Why the ear muffs 🙄.. badass truck. I am looking to get one in pretty soon. Looks like a blast.
I have a ton of gas cars, none as loud as this one. It is painfully loud, honestly. Thank you for watching!
@@hemistormrc I see. It looks fun. How is the engine holding up
hey i was wondering would the hpi octane be a good to go with or would the new traxxas brushless e-maxx?
I just bought one of these today and I'm a total novice. How will I notice if it's not running right?
I don't mean to be funny, but it will not run if it isn't running right. Be real gentle on needle adjustments, have a look for the latest HPI running tips so you set the needles correct and get one or two spare spark plugs to get you through break in. A lengthy, correctly executed break in sequence will give you one hell of a truck.
Great video I'm sorry to see your having trouble I wish I could help but idk.
wat een drama zeg!
Ik hou het wel bij mn losi 5ive!
Dit is echt nix voor mij hahaha!
Al dat gepiemel!
Thnx for all ya movies BTW
Groetjes Gast!
Hoi Angelo, het was even zoeken maar alles werkt nu naar behoren. Groetjes terug!
any help? I can't keep the engine running .. almost as soon as it hits the ground has torque from ground pressure it dies
Could be your idle is set too high, or it can be that your clutch has an issue. I would check the clutch first, as they are quite troublesome.
Ok...seems like its roaring when it starts and when I give it a little gas with remote it bogs / dies
hpi is breaking my heart lol,but the first run of any cars there is always bugs to fix.
I TALKED TO A FEW GUYS WHO TALKED TO HPI!! there guess is its the pick up for ignition or ignition box. so your hunch was right.
Today we found the CDI that goes with the original OS engine. Fingers crossed.
I hope it works out for you Hemi. I was so ready to get this truck but now i might wait a little until the bugs are worked out. Hpi techs themselves aren't even ready to troubleshoot these yet from what i hear. Seems to me they rushed it out to beat losi's truck they plan to release.
Andre Araujo
Well Andre, it seems like all issues are solved!
good to hear hemi.I look forward to seeing some bashing with your course you set up.
Have you sorted the problem out yet. Ive just bought one but not started it yet
Hi James, all issues are solved. Check out the playlist to see other videos about this truck, I will try to put as much info as I can out there!
Hi, I have the same problem. How can I solve it?? thanks
yeah probably something really simple like a seal or valve not seated properly. shouldnt happen on a brandnew truck im sure youll get it sorted. good luck bro!!
Hi David! I think it's some minor issue too, but thankfully HPI has good customer service. They haven't let me down in the past, so I'll just await their reply.
It sounds really lean. Loose carburetor? Or bad gasket
It was actually way rich in this video. This car is a mystery to say at least.

Done, with an overview video coming up later this week!
Are you also going to be getting the losi xxl2?
Hi Ben, no plans as of yet, but who knows what the future may bring.
Why was it not shifting into second gear?
Due to my very limited timeframe in which I could tune the gears. Without the engine running you have nothing to go by. ;)

Mike Barajas Yes, replaced mine a number of times so far. I think the setup could have been bigger considering the size and weight of the truck.

reminds me a lot like nitro. so much for no blisters. lol.
After the initial blisters, I'm quite sure my hands will stay intact. ;)
Beyler, size bir ricam var. Oktan ateşi 15 tank. 2. vites yavaşlar. ve motor boğulur. Bu yüzden oktan hızına ulaşmıyor. 2 vites geçtiğinde ölür. Lütfen bana yardım et: /
Sounds good when it's running lol
Sounds bigger than 15cc
It seems all new cars need to be a pain in the balls at first.
Hi Raymond, unfortunate but true. A bit more testing wouldn't hurt, after all we are talking top segment RC's, with a steep price tag.
That is true. I run a lot of nitro and every time i get a new motor. i hate brake in on them.
And I thought nitros where annoying. Think I will stick with electric.
This is noisier for sure! Got it up and running, new engine, new manual, no rules or guiding, given a chance this engine will revolutionize the 8th scale game.
dude i understand wanting to protect ur hearing but that is absolutely ridiculous...

During break in, you're close to the car quite often. :)
It's his ears. He can wear whatever he wants.
And I thought nitros where annoying. Think I will stick with electric.
