  • As part of our mini-series on Mormonism's Second Anointing Ritual, we are re-releasing part of Hans and Birgitta's original interview discussing their participation in this exclusive ceremony. Hans H. Mattsson is a 3rd generation LDS church member from Sweden who served as a bishop and stake president in Sweden before serving in the LDS church 3rd Quorum of the Seventy from 2000-2005 in the Europe Central area under LDS Apostle L. Tom Perry.
After discovering troubling information about the Church's history and truth claims, the Mattssons, along with many Swedish saints wanted answers, leading up to the Church's infamously poor attempt to keep them in the fold, now known as "the Swedish Rescue."

The issue we had with finding out about the 2nd anointing is because it’s secret (not sacred) and because someone other than our supposed ultimate Judge (Jesus) gets to “nominate” someone they feel is worthy.
    Hindsight… it’s a big ol crock a crap!

    • @boysrus61

Ohhh I never thought of that little aspect before- that someone else gets to nominate who they think gets it, they get to ultimately judge us. Hmmmmm I wonder if the push back would be that if they have their calling and election made sure they are worthy to be the judge of others. This is disturbing.

The fact that the Second Anointing is an MLM-style referral scheme, distributed to friends, family, and wealthy members connected to top ranking General Authorities, instead of being bestowed upon faithful members through revelation from the Lord who is NOT a respecter of persons, is a major red flag. To think the likes of sex-pest and con-artist, Tim Ballard, would be given the Second Anointing by Elder Ballard because of his political/social/financial influence, and not due to any actual worthiness makes a mockery of the entire religion.

After watching this I went down a rabbit hole about the Swedish Rescue. I found the audio of the actual meeting. The leaders did nothing but obfuscate, duck questions and basically provide useless "answers." I can see why those people left the church. Those two "leaders" dug their own graves--and one for the church as well.

I joined the church in the mid 1970s far away from Utah. The members in my area were greatly influenced by McConkie; Mormon Doctrine was like scripture. I remember learning about the second anointing from the members, although they didn’t give it a name. They taught us that if your calling and election was made sure you were at the point that you would no longer have any desire to sin; that’s why you had this guarantee. They made it sound less like a privilege that you received, but a recognition of your spiritual growth. It’s only now that I realise that at least a few of them must have received their second anointing.

After my parents were the Provo Mission President, I noticed a change in their pride and entitlement and believe it was because they received the second anointing. After their mission they removed my brother and I from their will, leaving everything to their only natural child (my brother and I were adopted). I was a very active member and tried to be the perfect daughter, and they acknowledged the only thing I did wrong was move away from their hometown (we were in the military). They lied to us for years about the will, saying everything was divided equally. When I confronted my dad about it after my mom died, he denied lying and stopped talking to me until shortly before his death. He lied to the rest of the family that we were removed from the will and insisted he gave me and my brother large amounts of money. My brother and I never received a dime, though he did regularly give my sister money, including a house and car. His inability to admit his lies and that he erred, I directly attributed to his receiving the second anointing. When he refused to fix the will, I felt free to stop being perfect and left the church, divorced (35 year marriage) and came out as lesbian.
When I first learned about his lies, I stopped attending church weekly because I did not want to go to a heaven with my parents. Then I learned church history was a lie and had my name removed.i was finally free to pursue what made me happy. 5 years in a lesbian partnership and I’m so happy. I lost all my family and that was hard but I feel joy and peace daily.

It would be interesting to know if Masonites have anything similar to the 2nd annointing in their ceremonies. Any exclusive rituals that hardly anyone knows about. I also must say that receiving the washing and anointing as a woman in the temple felt beautiful to me. I had always heard whisperings that possibly Joseph Smith believed women could have the priesthood directly, and here i was being blessed by another woman with consecrated oil, and the laying on of hands, no less. That felt powerful to me, and i felt loved. Everything else felt so strange. I only went back a few times after that. So, when this Swedish couple was talking about the washing of feet, and her giving a blessing to him, it reminded me of my time in the temple. I believe it did have spiritual significance to them at the time. Its obvious they have great love and respect for each other.

We even cloth them in robes and award them with titles and diplomas and plaques--and all of this in spite of the division it causes between people. But in religion--even when the Lord's anointed are tasked with serving as the least of all--we are mystified by the idea that a brother or a sister are declared to be perfect in Christ. Shouldn't we rather rejoice for them? That God has seen fit to bless them with such a supernal gift? And shouldn't we rather look forward with a hope in Christ to receiving the same gift--whether in this life or the next?

At some point we all will have an accounting done by Christ, and will go to our various abodes, I can see that many members will know both sides, but don't want eternal life and they'll be satisfied with what they are given, but those who had a decent understanding that bonded to their own spirit through the Holy Spirit, what of them, I don't know, but I know that this is the time to get it right, and try with everything in you to get it right.

The denial is real. I feel sorry for those who remain consciously blind to the absolute deceitful magic of this abomination called the Mormon church. Why is it that the higher they climb in this multilevel extortion, the more they want to convince themselves that it is true. I wasted years of my life wondering why my bussom didn't burn like others claim to have felt. The day I left and finally took the rags, I now use to dust my furniture with off, was the first day I felt true peace. Those "garments" that were supposed to protect me like some magic amulet cost my family years of 10% of combined income and protected nothing. The church engages in mental and spiritual abuse. Wake up, people. Study the history of this Machiavellian church.

This is what DECENCY looks like.
    This is how DECENCY speaks.
    This is how DECENCY thinks.
    THIS IS THE COURAGE and
    THE INTEGRITY
    of DECENCY.
Decency is itself a gift of God. They had it BEFORE this "anointing"; that is why THEY STILL HAVE IT. 🌺

I would share an observation I have pondered and studied for many years.
It is about Emma Smith Joseph's first wife and his rock and his strength and comforter.
She really had a tough time of it. Her husband was away so much that she had to raise and mourn many of her children by herself. She was terrified of Joseph and their family being killed.
In the Doctrine And Covenants it tells of her sure election into the Celestial Kingdom of She remained true to the end.
Now many will know that Emma did not leave for the Salt Lake Valley and She declared that her sons should be the Prophet not Brigham Young. She was also involved with the Reformed LD S churches.
I still feel her selection to the Celestial Kingdom will be hers. I think people think that the end is our death but I don't. I think that physically and mentally she had reached her end.. Just like some of us do. People with dementia mental health issues may only endure long before their physical body ends.
My Saviour and my Heavenly Parents are fair, loving and filled with so much compassion that we can never comprehend. It's what keeps me going that my works will be judged by a perfect Godhead not an earthly being.
I do not believe that my Heavenly Mother is any less than my Heavenly Father.
I have studied so much of Church History over the years. I joined the Church in Scotland when I was 14.
My first Seminary lessons were the Old Testament and then Church History. I knew about the question of when Black Men would receive the Priesthood. About Joseph's many plural wives. My teacher expected us to search out from contemporary accounts the History of the Church which I did. I grew my own conclusions from the readings and honest prayer which is how I approach most questions about anything.
As time had marched on more contemporary stories have been searched and compared with many from the Records of the Church. Many with just a little investigation have been proved inaccurate.
There are also ones that have been confirmed from similar accounts.
Whilst Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church and is perfect. Prophets,Apostles, Bishops, Stake Presidens are mortal men who fail at times. I am always comforted by the fact that any Prophet will be removed by the Lord of they start to lead the Church astray. I have my own opinions as to who if any might have had that judgement and experience. I do not consider any Prophet or General or Priesthood Authority above me. They are all children of our Heavenly Parents and we all have an equal chance to live the Gospel and receive exaltation..
Although they certainly work hard even in their advanced age. I think some rest is their due..
I know that we have a living Prophet on this Earth President Russell Nelson. He is such an educated and loving man. Even at a 100 he could give President Joe Biden a run for his money. He is starting to look frail though.
I remember being at a Area Convention of the Church in Manchester in 1971 the year after my baptism. I was sitting behind the Podium where the speakers spoke during one of the Sessions. I was shocked and dismayed when Joseph Fielding Smith the then Prophet being lifted along and up the stairs by his security team. It really rocked my faith until he started to speak. His voice was strong and pure. I don't remember his message but I knew he was a Prophet.
Later in life I taught Stories of the Prophets in Relief Society. My most inspiring Prophet was him Joseph Fielding Smith. I learnt that three days before he came to speak to us in British Isles his wife had died.
He had a sorrowful life in lots of ways. He was widowed three times and had taken care of his many small children with limited help. He taught himself to cook clean launder and put braids in his daughters hair. He was a very tender Father.
I think He was such a humble man. He was descended from Hyrum Smith and Mary Fielding Smith.

Are you into adultery, witchcraft and encantation? If you read the book of Mormon backwards you can summon the dead....you have no clue about your Mormon history...your Saint Joseph was married to over 25 women, most of the time without Emma's knowledge...he married 14 year olds...the man engaged in so much improper behavior and lies...did you know he wanted to be coronated king...your beloved church engaged un sex trafficking of girls to satisfy the perverted sexyal needs of leaders like Brigham Young and his cronies and calked it polygamy and ordained of God...your eyes and ears need a blessing dear woman...dug into the church history books and documents online...put there by the church itself because they couldn't continue to hide facts and cover the sun with one finger...read a book called no man knows my story...the entire church and it's doctrine is a lie!!!! The fabrication of a mad man...do yourself a favor, research for yourself. Don't go to the leaders for answers. They have no true answers...they are either just as list as you and will question your testimony and worthiness, or they have their own agenda....LOOK FOR YOURSELF. Itvis all there in plain English. I was lije you and I remained in the dark fir 27 years, talking myself into believing and making up feelings I desperately wanted to feel...my son and Jesus restored me to sanity. My son showed me what I never knew, what was never taught, what was hidden from ALL of us because it didn't fit the narrative....please LOOK.

When you, the participant, first receive your endowment, you are anointed. With the second anointment, you are anointed a second time. I love the idea of an archetypical hero’s journey. This is found throughout literature, both religious and not. The Illiad and the Oddessy, Moses and Noah, are great examples, yet each person’s life can be a Hero’s Journey. The participant is anointed for the journey as they cross the threshold and take on the quest. They start out as innocent and naive to what will be required of them on this journey. As they move along this journey, they discover what the challenges will be. Each journey is unique, but mentors appear to strengthen, assist and counsel on this journey. They pick up the implements of battle they will need. They encounter challenges along the way and both choose and discover mentors along the way as well as more implements. It is the battle of a lifetime. There are trials to face, failures to overcome, and surprises at every turn. In the end they find that the battle has transformed them into far more than they ever imagined. That is an interesting thing in this interesting hero’s journey. The innocent goes forth to conquer and instead finds they are transformed. Transformed into so much more than they ever expected. I see aspects of this Hero’s Journey in their story. I wonder if their journey is complete. Maybe there are still demons to face. Maybe there is a transformation and they are at a new threshold. Maybe I am off the wall. But I am curious to find out. They are a beautiful couple. 😊

Heavenly exaltation is only in the hands of God, not men who are in a paid ministry holding a high status according to human dictates. God rules His people, full stop. Why people lose their faith is because they see and hear stuff go on in the LDS church which leaves God out of the equation. It operates as a business corporation.

The Second Annointing is so elitist for a church that claims that are equal before God. It’s also interesting to me that since this ordinance has become so well known in recent years, the newest changes in the temple reflect any old persons ability to “pierce the veil” and walk into the presence of God and receive the fullness of the Priesthood by God, Himself. It feels a little like the changes were made to alleviate the frustration of the general membership when they find out about it because now they can be told that, if they live right, they can receive it as well. It also gives the loophole that if they don’t have the opportunity to walk into the presence of God in this earthly life , then it’s because they weren’t faithful enough or worthy enough. Sounds an awful lot like what JS did to the saints.

They don't wash the women's feet because in the first endowment the men will be cleansed based on their faithfulness and then they turn to the women and say they have been pronounced clean. It's not based on conditions like it is for men.
