Kaunas was the capital of independent Republic of Lithuania in 1918-1939. Also the fortress Kaunas played an outstanding role during the Lithuanian crusades in the fourteenth century. In fact, the crusades have given a birth to the city, so neatly located on the right bank of Niemen-Nemunas. In the USSR, in 1945-1991, Kaunas, although lost its status of a capital in favor of Wilno-Vilnius, remained a basketbal capital in Lithuania and a principal basketball center in the USSR. A local team Zalgiris, in the 1980s, led by Sabonis, Jovaisha, Kurtinaitis, has beaten CSKA-Red Army Moscow several times.

I know it was hard to cope with that heat wave but trust me - you can consider yourself lucky, cause August might be rain rain rain, if you look at the forecasts :)
Also, i think main attractions of Lithuania, once you visited bigger cities and towns, several castles and palaces - are probably nature related.
If you like long walks, there are many so called Educational Paths - several kilometers long walks in nature with some signs/stands, explaining about local fauna and flora.
Winter can be really dreary if no snow (and usually bigger part of winter is snowless) - cloudy, dark, no leaves, everything's just grey :)
    Have fun :D

saying Kaunas is cooler then Vilnius may get you into trouble you know :)) there are (or was?) some serious competition between those two cities basketball teams after that came Christmas trees ant then it just grew to a whole being which city is better so some may get upset about your title :) But all jokes aside i am simply happy you are enjoying our little country :)
I do hope to see you take through our small cities or even villages - you may find real gems in there depending what interests you.

@@laura-bronner Anykščiai comes to my mind first. And here is why:
1)The town itself. It has nice river bank just to walk by, a church tower to climb and enjoy the view.
      www.infoanyksciai.lt/index.php?module=tourism&action=view_poi&id=116&lid=2
      2) medžių lajų takas (treetop path) - even if you are not nature liking person i bet it will be interesting for you
      www.anyksciuparkas.lt/en/activities-what-to-do/treetop-walking-path/
3)if you still have a little child in you then maybe Kalitos kalnas may offer you some joy :) www.infoanyksciai.lt/en/sledge-track/
those are my priorities but this small town has to offer so much more :)
Birštonas maybe interesting to see, but its best to visit it on a sunny day then its warm because you will loose some fun if its to cold to get your feet wet :)
      www.visitbirstonas.lt/en/sightseeing-places/kneipp-garden/
i may have some other but at first i would like to know what you like in our country so i can recommend some more to your taste;) and for that i have to watch more videos, so keep it coming :)

at that heat and hot summer days lithuanians hardly stay in cities ,people usually tried to be not in city, mostly run by sea side or if in kaunas then by nearby lakes, river banks, camping, many going outside to their summers houses and just chilling out in terraces and etc..Seaside resort Palanga in summer called capital of Lithuania, because of the weather and people just floated there. cities during hot summer days is really empty- everybody tries to stay somewhere in nature

Very nice day, and it reminds me that I utilized Lithuanian hardwood flooring guys on a couple of projects. (Mexican framers, Czech tile, Slovakian plumbers, Polish title lady etc.) Makes you wonder why all of these people would leave their home countries for the high prices and cold winters of Colorado mountains. In the long run, in my mind, it is the never-ending sphere of the Russian empire. I think I need to read Poland, by Michener.
