- Satan and Adam, the Harlem blues duo, in their prime. Mr. Satan (Sterling Magee) is the subject of Adam Gussow's 1998 memoir, MISTER SATAN'S APPRENTICE. The duo opens with an original, "Sunshine in the Shade," then segues into Billy Preston's "Will It Go Round in Circles."
I was there working with the sound company(Treetop Sound and Lights from Portsmouth, VA) Between sets, I stood on that same stage running cables, and helping musicians get set up. It was an incredible show. Two people filling the night with more sound than most larger combos can imagine. It was a great honor for me, and one of the best memories I can recall !!!!!!
Sterling and Adam what a great combination. The Netflix Documentary what a great story. The Blues are the heart of Rock and Roll !
Blues is America and beyond. It's our healing music. Rejoice brothers and sisters!! Rejoice all!!!!!
No music was satisfying my itch tonight, and then I hit this! Itch satisfaction!
The documentary brought me here.
The greatest music team EVER ❤ The groove was so perfectly solid and matched. Complimenting and all as one. Not stepping over or on toes. Blows my mind!
Rest in peace Mr Satan. Sep 10 2020
Satan is an awesome bluesman. I would love to see him play live.

MAD JAM in E! The ebb and flow of the harmonica was inspirational and educational. You are SO LUCKY to have satan. In my shithole of a burgh everybody insists the blues is dead and the harmonica belongs on hee-haw:( You have re-ignited my love of the instrument and put me on new, greater paths, thank you;)
Nice to see. Had a time getting "Living On The River" on my iPod but with a little help from my niece with a Mac I'm now back in business with my favorite street duo!
I feel like I've never seen the blues before, and I listen to a lot of Delta blues in my time, lemme tell you...
I have to come to harlem and meet satan man! You guys are great! it's all feel man! you listen to each other and go! Thats pure and real man!
Adam, that was great! I see what you mean about moving with the music... all that running and harp playing sure TONE's you up!
This was real music.. Btw i loved his foot percussion it added so much
Magic Duo
I saw them play at The Jewish Mother in VA Beach in the early 90s. It was a great show, and I kept thinking that Satan done got himself a little Richie Cunningham-looking sidekick. It’s even funnier now knowing that Adam was a college grad at the time.
I'm one of those guys who just doesn't have quite the look that people expect the person doing the job to have.
Yes, it's just been republished by U of MInnesota Press. google "mister satan's apprentice" and buy it at amazon & elsewhere......
Cool stuff
He no longer lives in Harlem. He lives at the Boca Ciega facility in Gulfport, FL, in greater St. Petersburg. If you call ahead, I'm sure he'd be happy to have you stop by. If you blow harp, bring a harp.
whats his tuning?? omg this man is a god...
i need to know how to do this...
I pray to God that someone out there has 1 or 50 excellent video's of him close up and playing his magic! That part of the documentary when he pulls out his 12 string and begins to blow me away with these WILD chord progressions ... well it's clear as day that his work is not from this world. God bless him where ever he is. Thank you for letting us into your world. (BTW, I'd love to buy some of his art work)
@@chrispower475 i thought the same thing on that scene, crazy progressions, and they sounded cohesive, crazy talent
Chris Power is he playing chords
Imagine having a professor this cool
Thanks, Jim. The feeling is mutual. I've checked out your videos; you're doing something useful yourself--keeping that anarchic spirit alive. If the harp isn't about that at least some of the time, what the hell is it about?
@4:50.. shows mastery!
was camped out at this show. great to see it again.
Hot Stuff!
Jim, if the town folk are still watching Hee-Haw, that tells you something! Even Charlie McCoy can play the blues (and then some!). But it does take dedicated people to keep the blues alive... Check out Joe Filisko, a true living ambassador for blues harmonica.
mr. gussow, word has it you have a memoir available? how might i go bout checkin in2 that?
That’s some Mississippi delta right there,.🍉
I need an amp. I have a Gretsch Country Gentleman from the 50s, but am very disappointed with the sound. If you were given your choice of ONE AMP for a medium venue,...what would you buy?
A black and white love affair.. let us learn from it...
