  • Did the board games I've most anticipated over the last two years fail to meet my expectations? Or were they better than I could have imagined? How good am I at predicting which games will make my Top 10 of the year? In this video, I take a look back and try to answer these questions.
    This is a quick follow up video to my Most Anticipated Solo Games of 2024 list: • Top 10 Anticipated Sol... .

    Another reminder to go get Voidfall - but also a reminder to stay strong (till my birthday) and enjoy playing what’s already on my shelf!

    You say you do a bad job of determining which games will be released and when, but I think a lot of that blame falls on kickstarted projects. The variability in how those games are delivered can be from a few weeks up to a few years to never arriving at all. Kickstarter makes it easy to get excited about games, but it struggles at times to deliver those games in a timely fashion that also satisfies that excitement.
    I also noticed there are no Stonemaier games on your anticipation lists. That's likely related to how they release their games. Providing, at most, a month to learn about and then get excited about a game before it arrives at your doorstep. Comparatively, that is a short window to get hyped about a game, but at least you know the game will arrive when they say it will. I've come to prefer their release strategy over kickstarter, even if their games haven't been crushing the top of anyone's lists lately. For me, I'll take an above average solo game like Apiary after a month of hype over the next big kickstarter getting me excited only to fail to deliver in a year's time.
    All of this is to say, anticipating games can be fun, but often times it feels like reading the stock market. Lately, I've been trying to temper my expectations for games, especially kickstarters. I support them with the hope they will be good and arrive in a year's time, but knowing full well it could be a bust in either case. And, when a game pops up that wasn't on my radar and knocks it out of the park, its a different kind of excitement that is just as satisfying.
    Appreciate the video(s) as it helps put some games on my radar that may not have been there before! And thanks for being a positive voice in the solo gaming community!

      For sure. With crowdfunding you have to expect that all timelines are unrealistic. You are right, these kinds of lists focus on crowdfunding games because we hear about them so early. The max hype is before they've even been made. This is not a good thing. I admire any company that goes straight to retail. I actually spend very little time looking at future games, so I'm probably the wrong person to do these anticipation lists, but it is fun to do once per year. Thanks so much for checking out the video and taking the time to share your thoughts. I really appreciate it!

    I recently picked up Frostpunk as its been on a really good sale. I mean REALLY good. Games are EXPENSIVE here in NZ as we have to convert our $. Great to see a game that good on heavy discount. I assume there is another print or version coming out, but like having the 'classic' versions - particularity on sale.

    Hearing that the Carnegie solo gameplay is easy to manage makes me interested in that one. And as for O. Kanal...it's been picked up by a French publisher and renamed "Kanal." Slated to come out in October 2024 and still no clarity on whether there will be a US release for the game or not.

    Tamashii is great! Very well made and it has an outstanding True Solo mode.
    Burncycle is great but it does take dedication to make it through an entire game. Great stealth mechanics and it looks great. I think you’ll like it, once you get to play it.

    I'm a noob solo board gamer, only started last year. I've been loving your videos, I'm really inclined to Robinson Crusoe and/or Spirit Island. I already saw your Robinson Crusoe videos but you don't have any for Spirit Island. What's your opinion between these 2 and what should I buy first? Right now I have star wars: outer rim and expeditions and I love them both as solo

    • @TotallyTabled
      @TotallyTabled  7 месяцев назад +1

      Well, Robinson Crusoe is my favorite solo game of all time, so that one will always get the nod from me. If you've seen my playthroughs then you know what the game is about. Spirit Island would be the "solo community's" pick. It is a favorite because it is an insanely deep and strategic co-op. The problem I have with it is that I think it plays best with 2 spirits. A lot of players will just play with two spirits when playing solo, but I find that difficult. Two players controlling two spirits is my sweet spot, and so it hasn't been a major part of my solo diet so far. I have a goal to tackle Spirit Island solo, get over the hump, and get comfortable controlling two spirits, so expect a video sometime this year. But the two games feel very different. Do you want more of the push-your-luck storytelling of Robinson Crusoe, or the crunchy strategic card play of Spirit Island? You probably can't go wrong. Thanks so much for watching and supporting the channel!

      I watched Robinson Crusoe on here and got it for solo with no regrets, it’s great fun. I find it really hard as everything seems to want to kill, eat or hurt you, but wouldn’t have it any other way!

    So much delivered last year that I haven't had a chance to get to the table yet. I expect my play frequency will increase this year since I finally have a dedicated gaming space. Age of Comics is currently on my table to be played this weekend.
    I can thank (or blame) you for my Halls of Hegra purchase. I agree that it's not going to be high in my rotation list given the theme, but I very much enjoyed getting absolutely destroyed my first play 😂. I'm currently 1-2 games away from completing my second campaign playthrough of Legacy of Yu. I absolutely love the puzzle of that one, and I'll typically play about 2 games every time it hits my table.
    The deluxe edition for Robinson Crusoe just arrived, so I'm going to have to get that back to the table now and try some of the new scenarios. Haven't touched either Sleeping Gods yet... Hopefully soon.
    I'm also super anticipating Unconscious Mind. Hopefully that will arrive this summer or fall. We clearly have a lot of similar tastes in games! Love the videos as usual.

    • @TotallyTabled
      @TotallyTabled  7 месяцев назад +1

      Oh, please let me know what you think about Age of Comics once you get it played. Very curious about that one. I love the theme and look of it. I totally agree with you -- a flood of games have come in all at once. It is going to take all year to get through them. Hopefully nothing else will come out in the meantime. :) My RC just arrived as well! The Adventure Book is AWESOME! I also love the neoprene mat. I need to get Primal filmed so I can bust out RC and figure out what I want to show on the channel first. Thanks so much. It is always wonderful to hear from you!
