  • HOW COOL IS THAT??? On Monday, Labor Day, at the 27th Annual African Festival of the Arts, in Washington Park, Tiffany and I were more than honored, when our good friend legendary singer Howard Hewett, called us on the stage to get our 'Step On'. Howard already knows that "Crystal Clear", is my favorite of his uptempo songs. Earlier in the day at breakfast, we had joked about him performing the song and letting me dance to it.
We wanted to dance only on the one song. I was even more happy to have the opportunity to bring him out to the stage. Backstage I said "Howard, when you come to the stairs on the stage, that will be my que to bring you out. When I saw him at the top of the staircase, he seemed to be looking down as if to adjust or get his ipod to work...so I began to stretch, talking about how we became friends and how he was instrumental in starting my breast cancer awareness program, named in memory of my late wife ANAIA, who lost her battle to the disease in April, 2004.
I looked over again and he still seemed to be working on his ipod, so I asked the crowd if they had seen the latest episode of "UNSUNG", the highly rated music/bio program on TV One.
Little did I know, that he was ready all the time he was on the stage. He laughed and said, "Tony (that's what we call each other), that was a long and almost boring introduction and now I am going to have to wake them up."
He was right, I was long, but it was a case of mistaken communication. After the show, I told him, I was happy he had to go out there and give the huge crowd a little bit more. They loved it and as I looked into the crowd, I could see the ladies swooning, standing up and signing along. Steppers were on the dance floor and everyone else was swaying back and forth in their lawn chairs. Just to show you how great Howard is, he normally drinks hot tea and honey before a performance. We couldn't find any honey or tea. So he just drank the room temperature water and went out and did his thing. I know some artists would not have performed if everything wasn't exactly like their riders had called for. Hewett was followed by Rose Royce who kept the crowd dancing and clapping their hands.
