- Here's another MPC Era locomotive, this one from the 1980-1981 New Englander Set featuring the alternative low cost Chugging Sound of Steam tender that utilized a rotating wheel that had beads inside that produced a very low cost chugging sound without the need for any electronics. This primitive sound system was used by Lionel between 1975 and 1982 in parallel with its more expensive electronic Mighty Sound of Steam locomotives. During this time Lionel was also experimenting with using lower cost DC motors with DC power packs. These train sets were not compatible with previously marketed AC powered train sets.
I used a Full Bridge Rectifier to allow the DC motor to handle AC power. The only downside to this is you lose the ability to run in reverse unless you install a switch to reverse the polarity. It's still a very nice locomotive to run and pulls quite well.
Gorgeous engine, thanks!
Interesting engine! I have the Wabash BB's in a can tender and although crude, it is effective. Nice video!
Could you share a link for the full bridge rectifier. Also, would you do a video showing how to connect the rectifier?
