    Just a quick "grain of salt" test showing how nasty soil conditions can trouble even the BEST of metal detectors. No 14-inch depth tests here folks (I wish). No - we didn't test gold rings and nickels and 50 different settings. We just wanted to show how the minerals can affect the "big dogs" of the hobby in park modes - at the park - as we are park hunters. EDIT: All 4 detectors were at stock ground balance settings to ensure no incorrect values being a very trashy park. It is nearly impossible to ground balance an 11-inch coil at this park. NOTE TO SKEPTICS: Deus 2 default is 87 ground balance...my soil is 85-86 if you watch the Deus 2 review video - where I did ground balance it and tried multiple modes. AGAIN - this is a "grain of salt" test just like every other test on RUclips. Settle down ya nerds.

    THIS is testing. This, is where we discover if our expensive, much vaunted machine/s are worth their price marker/s. Throw in a bucketful or ten of old nails, et al, and we have a scenario that tears the so-called testing of machines to shreds. There are no hiding places here. No soft soil to impress the 'depth monster brigade'. These test formats are for realists, not 'dodgers and divers'. Bravo to you, as a dealer, for giving us a vastly more 'rounded' and realist appraisal, rather than pander to the egos of the masses. You are right up on a level with the likes of Keith; as a TRUE hard-core tester. You shame the egotists and blaggards. Bravo John.

      Ha. Thanks Tim...you are too kind good sir. No hype or fluff needed...I don't really care what wins. They all are so close it is a moot point. Anybody who owns one of these detectors should be a pig in poop.
      Soil like this is normal for me. Colorado was extremely similar, maybe even worse. When I see a 14 inch dime test on RUclips...I can only shake my head. Kudos to people that have soil like that, but that is not the reality for the other 9/10ths of the country. The soil here sounds like there is a square nail every 2 inches - but is just rusty pocketing from black sand. Sometime those rusty pockets can even high tone false. Makes for interesting detecting no doubt.

    Nice demo John. One thing that stood out was when you mentioned trashy park. I would never run any machine like them in that way if it were a trashy area. That being said it was a neat test. Like you said the difference in signal from 8" to 10" is pretty wild!

I have the NOX 800, the E-trac, and the Deus II, but not the CTX, it's a little too expensive for me. Hay, eight inches for all four, that is not bad. Thanks Hunter, I found your channel about a month ago and am liking it.

    Great video. Nox and ctx got the closest but probably would have not dug either in a park setting. Really the name of the game is separation not so much depth. If there is a ton of junk up high in the ground detectors probably won’t see something that deep anyhow. Great video fair comparison in my opinion.

    • @thehuntergt

    • @thehuntergt
      @thehuntergt  2 года назад +4

      If your soil is nasty like this...I would not think so. In softer soils, the script can flip and the Deus 2 ends up being very deep. CTX stretches then as well, perhaps even better. XP machines have always been "average" as far as mineral handling, for sure Minelab is better (my opinion). But as you can see here, no detector is great. That being said - in tough soil like this, nothing sinks deep - usually. So separation and recovery speed become more important than depth...Deus 2 is just about king there.

      I have an E-trac and the NOX 800. My Deus II came four weeks ago. First two weeks I struggled, mainly because I don't know how to program. I finally set up the Deus II so nickles sound good at (61-63) and copper pennies and above (91- 99) sound off loud and high pitched. Two days ago, I dug an 8 inch silver quarter that read 99 in dry dirt. I am beginning to love the Deus. It's so lightweight, and easy to swing and I getting use to the small screen. At the beach, it went deep, even in dry sand. Give the Deus a chance. I'm guessing in wet soil the Deus performs better. I should mention, I live in California.

Not trying to brag but I blew them out of the water probably 75% of the time. But I never use any discrimination and have my sensitivity cranked all the time. I just know my machine well and learned to listen thru the chatter and always back swing my targets so as to hear any honest trash growl at the target's edge. Nox is a great machine too though! But I just bought the Deus 2 and am so excited. Save the power for the depth and let your mind separate the targets!

    Hi Hunter, thank you for the professional test. May I suggest another test? You could let the ORX, DEUS I and DEUS II compete against each other. A Dime Silver would again be a very good test object. A prior air test would be beneficial for all of us. Then we could compare our detectors with it. I am thinking of the update of the DEUS II, where there was a loss of depth in some cases after the update. As in my case.

    Hey Hi Hunter. In tricky magnetic soil, detectors work better with higher recovery speeds. I think page 23-24 of the Deus 2 manual mentions that also. Also holding the coil a bit away from the ground can work better. Talking of the Nox: There are different modes suited to different soils. Here in the UK people use beach modes on the land and also Field and Park modes. In my soil field 2 and recovery 6 goes deepest. So you have to experiment with different modes. Park 1 goes deepest in soft dry white sand and benign soils. I use field 2 in the wet salty sand with my special settings not beach.
    The Nox settings are very logical and can’t easily be bettered. I can lose the ground chatter and bring it back with one button while still hearing iron. Hearing ground chatter can be a clue to previous habitation or a nuisance.
    The Legend probably cannot do that. The Deus 2 is so complicated, most people would just use standard settings. And I an’t see how it could do that either. I have no preference for any make, my comments are not biased. I have a Deus 1 and love it and use it a lot but it has its place.

      Better to have a deep dime up average than down average. Even the Equinox was pegging it at 40 many sweeps...which is "60" on its scale. The 1-2 ID on the Legend is almost always going to be soil feedback. The "G" setting cancels it so you would not hear the ground on swings. Hope that helps.

    That's long been the problem with comparison videos...disgruntled viewers in the comments always want to critique something and throw out endless "IF" scenarios. "If you would have done this...changed this to that...used X model machine for apples to apples, stood on one leg while squinting at the sun...." etc etc. I had one viewer that got after me because I did a video in the field comparing an MXT with an F75 on Civil War bullets in mineralized soil. The results were the MXT just couldn't get a signal on the bullets beyond a certain depth. He was a very outspoken guy...I was supposed to have this particular DD coil on the MXT and then it would blow any machine away, etc. He said I didn't know what I was doing. So I invited him up to the site with the terms that I would video him with his machine, set however he wanted and we would compare signals. To my surprise he came. We get to the site...which is just a field that was a rifle range during the Civil War. Thousands of minie balls in about the 7-14 inch range. But highly red mineralized soil. We had been there about 30 minutes and I went to check on him...asked if he had found any and he said no...he kinda acted like I had took him somewhere with nothing to find. I told him I had already found 10. He shook his head. I started hunting near him and quickly located 3 signals that I knew were gonna be minie balls. I marked them and called him over. He swung over them...nothing. He had a 10x12 SEF dd coil on his. I let him listen to the F75 to show what I was hearing and he said "that has to be iron junk...that's not a bullet". I dug the bullets out one by one in front of him. On the last of the 3, he wanted to play with his machine over it and couldn't get anything. He tried every setting he could think of. And finally admitted that he was wrong and that that site was the worse dirt he had ever seen lol.

    I only have one issue with this. You're running the machines on the lowest recovery speed for max depth which is cool but you're still swinging them like a jedi. Lowest recovery speed means lowest swing speed as well. Just because one machine is on 1 it doesn't mean that all 1's are equal so I'd like to see multiple swing speeds for each machine. That will also mean you can't put your targets a foot apart......spread them out. Lower swing speeds require more space to scan more ground. It may not change the results in any way but I suspect that the variations in price are going to show up in the CPU speeds which might make some difference. It's possible all of them can hit the 10 incher with a bit of swing discipline. :)

    • @thehuntergt
      @thehuntergt  2 года назад +6

      We tested off camera for almost 3 hours before hitting record. We swung each direction with every sweep speed possible - every setting possible - every program possible. For the sake of the video not being 45 minutes of blah blah blah...I used a very acceptable swing speed. I will disagree I was swinging like a Jedi. I will also disagree that wildly changing your swing speed because you lower/raise your reactivity is as helpful as you think it is. I will actually prove it in an upcoming test video - as I have heard this incorrect theory many times before. Time to put it to bed once and for all.

    • @MrBottlecapBill
      @MrBottlecapBill 2 года назад

      @@thehuntergtIf you say you already did that I'll trust you. I just went by my opinion of what I see in the video. I'd be interested in the recovery test actually. Most people swing over multiple targets hear a lot of noise and think "wow that's fast". Calabash did a short video a while back of the deus 2 in recovery speed with nine targets and a bit of iron in there. Anyway he swings fast then uber fast but if you slow the video down to .25 and knock out the double tones coming off the edge of the coils on the ends of his swing at best the machine only hits 5 targets, mostly 4 and only 3 at uber swing speed. It was missing 50% of the targets from the start, despite sounding impressive. Had he done slow swing on video I think it would have done a much better job. I could be wrong, that's why it's important to vary the speeds. If nothing else its nice to know the sweet spots should one purchase any of the machines you're testing.

    • @thehuntergt
      @thehuntergt  2 года назад +2

      @@MrBottlecapBill We can agree there. The sweet spot is key. That is the most important aspect of the hobby in my eyes - knowing the detectors optimal swing speed. In most of my "review" videos I show a recovery speed test where I swing slow and then fast to see where the actual drop-off is. Not perfect by any means. I'll try to get a video up in the next few weeks about this topic. HH

    Being a Deus dealer I wouldn’t think you would Stack the deck , but I think you did

      What does being a dealer have to do with this test? I let my audience (and customers) make their own decisions without BS hype. Your logic is beyond stupid - as I make the most % of revenue off of XP - yet show it could not hit the 10 inch dime at all. I do not even sell Minelab - yet I show them both getting hits. So how exactly did I stack the deck? If you are going to accuse me of something, have the balls to explain yourself with some sort of logic, coward.

      @@thehuntergt Love it, you told him like it is, and that made me laugh. This guy is absolutely 100% wrong.

      I don’t think he stacked the deck. There are a couple versions of the big number 0.6 Deus update. If he was on version 08-03-22, rather than 11-03-22 it would significantly impact depth. The two versions are why you have half of Deus 2 users reporting loss of depth and tone smearing, and the other half calling those guys crazy. This video was made right around that time.

    Just purchased Deus2 this is very depressing

      Not sure why. It does great in nails - at the beach - in softer soils - waterproof to 66 feet if you ever dive. Very good machine. People watch soft soil test video and get all hyped up....well don't let this depress you. Your soil is "hopefully" somewhere in between the two extremes. Personally - for my soil - I am extremely happy with 8 inches of depth from all of these detectors.

      I've had my Deus II for about a month now, and I am beginning to love it. Don't be depressed, I think you learn to love your Deus II also. Give it a chance. It just being so lite, is a big plus.

      I bought one too and was much less enthusiastic after seeing this, but happy for my CTX. When I began to think about the test, it shouldn’t be surprising however. It’s two different kinds of multifrequency for one. Deus 2, Legend, and Equinox are simultaneous multifrequency, which means transmit power is constantly divided. CTX is sequential multifrequency firing it’s frequencies in more of a pulse like manner. As another matter we know from Geotech that the CTX uses and focuses heavily on a low return frequency of 3.125khz along with measuring it’s half-life. We don’t know what all the rest of the machines run in multi in every mode, but we can assume it’s no less than 4khz. 4 and 3.125 doesn’t sound like a big difference, but it’s bigger than it sounds and should give the CTX a slight edge on high conductors.

      It does not hit at 0 or .5 or any other combo of settings. We played with settings for hours off-camera trying to get it to hit. I sell the Deus 2...I wanted it to perform well. We set it at 1 to match the other machines numerical value.
