"Óg" means young....... often a father and son (or even two brothers!) would have the same name.... so one would be "Dónal Óg" and the other would be "Dónal Mór" (big Dónal).
Dónal Óg Lyrics [Verse 1] O Dónal Óg when you cross the ocean Take me with you when you are going At fair or market you'll be well looked after And you shall sleep with the Greek king's daughter [Verse 2] My mother ordered me to shun you Today tomorrow and on Sunday Too late, in vain o'er spilt milk grieving Closing the door on a bygone thieving [Verse 3] If you come at all, come when stars are peeping Rap the door that makes no squeaking My mother will ask you to name your people And I'll say t'was the night wind weeping [Verse 4] The first kiss came and from no craven The second kiss came on top the stairway The third kiss came as down you lay me But for that one night, I'd be still a maiden [Verse 5] Oh Dónal Óg you'll not find me lazy Not like some high-born expensive lady I'll do your milking and I'll nurse your baby And if beset on I'll defend you bravely [Verse 6] You said you'd meet me but you were lying Beside the sheep shed as day was dying I whistled and called you twelve times repeating But all that I heard was the young lambs bleating [Verse 7] You took what's before me and what's behind me Took east and west when you wouldn't find me Sun, moon and stars you have taken And God himself if I'm not mistaken
This is such a beautifully mellifluous lament. I adore it and particularly the way Cathy sings it with such a longing. Donal sounds like a bit of a knob though, to be honest. Best off without the likes of him 😏
Beautiful version!
A heartbreakingly beautiful version of this saddest old Irish song. Ba dheas leagan Gaeilge a chloisteáil chomh maith.
New breath into a traditional tune🎶.
Dervish at their best👍
I love this, it is so beautiful. It is moving, like the poem by Lady Gregory.
Beautiful rendition. Well done Kathy & Dervish !
Such a beautoiful song, both lyrically and musically, and Cathy gets A+ too!!
I saw you play this at the Royal Concert Hall Glasgow and was completely blown away. It just took flight and took me with it.
Beautiful song
A wonderful version and if I may, I love Al O'Donnell's version as well.
Class 👌
Sounds like Donal wasn't a very nice bloke. Is Og his last name? What does the word mean?

Does anyone know where to find lyrics to this version?
Dónal Óg Lyrics
[Verse 1]
O Dónal Óg when you cross the ocean
Take me with you when you are going
At fair or market you'll be well looked after
And you shall sleep with the Greek king's daughter
[Verse 2]
My mother ordered me to shun you
Today tomorrow and on Sunday
Too late, in vain o'er spilt milk grieving
Closing the door on a bygone thieving
[Verse 3]
If you come at all, come when stars are peeping
Rap the door that makes no squeaking
My mother will ask you to name your people
And I'll say t'was the night wind weeping
[Verse 4]
The first kiss came and from no craven
The second kiss came on top the stairway
The third kiss came as down you lay me
But for that one night, I'd be still a maiden
[Verse 5]
Oh Dónal Óg you'll not find me lazy
Not like some high-born expensive lady
I'll do your milking and I'll nurse your baby
And if beset on I'll defend you bravely
[Verse 6]
You said you'd meet me but you were lying
Beside the sheep shed as day was dying
I whistled and called you twelve times repeating
But all that I heard was the young lambs bleating
[Verse 7]
You took what's before me and what's behind me
Took east and west when you wouldn't find me
Sun, moon and stars you have taken
And God himself if I'm not mistaken
@sharonwalter1309 thank you so so much!
