Brand-new layout update for everyone today! For more information, visit www.mfrailroad.com and check out my Instagram feed at / metaline_falls_railroad
A great update video! Thanks for sharing. The short section of 28" radius in way of the new turnout shouldn't pose much of an operational problem, once installed. You might have to slightly realign a foot or so of track on either end to get a smooth transition, but that shouldn't be a problem. Installing a Scale Sound Systems speaker and a LokSound 5 in the Helm Leasing loco should really make it pop! That's a great idea. SSS speakers are the BEST! It would be authentic looking if your renumbering was a patch-out. Looking forward to seeing and hearing the reconfigured loco.
Fast track has templates for various radius turnouts. you can build your own turnouts with their products. I build all my own turnouts using Fast tracks templates and products. I was a bit fearful at first, but after building my first one, it was full speed ahead. All the turnouts I have built work flawlessly. I highly recommend their products.
Great update! Maybe you need to set up a visit to my layout to give me the kick in the pants I need! Haha! Layout looks great! Really like your new lease locomotive. I think your layout needs some bridges! Neat idea with the switch locks! I actually have a BN switch lock from Thama. Did you know a GN steam locomotive jumped the tracks at Thama and went into the Pend Oreille river? Still down there. Keep the updates coming!
Great video Matt! You have really done a good job so far on the layout! Saw that VMID boxcar on the paper mill lead. I’ll definitely do a shoutout to you on my next video. Keep grinding and looking forward to your progress.
Welcome back. The rep for Walthers was at the Amherst show today and mentioned that they have plans to come out with additional turnouts in other sizes which i would think would be larger curved turnouts since they already have all of the smaller turnouts. Also they showed some new road crossing/rerailers that were more prototypical and they also said they were going to bring out code 70 track.
Just wanted to update you.. Walthers has released the curved turnouts in a 36/24 inch radius with the extended terminal to power the frog and a #6 left and right hand single crossover. They also have #8 and #10 turnouts. No news yet on the code 75 track. I would hope that they would do a 36/30 curved turnout.
Don’t be intimidated by building turnouts. FastTracks and Oak Hill both make excellent templates. The first one I built scared me but then it becomes addictive.
Nice update on the layout…I have the same issue with the Shinohara turnouts but hear new radius ones to be released in the future…leased power 👍🏽…have quite few also…do think the different drive systems in the ScaleTrains/Athearn diesels might have an affect on the speed matching?
I would say the drives being different are only a minor issue. The Scale Trains loco will take off slightly smoother than the Athearn one, but both maintain speed to each other rather well. The differences just might come down to the Athearn one being brand-new and not being broken in yet. The biggest issue was really the start up delay in the Scale Trains locomotive which turning off that feature wasn't very straight forward through JMRI. (there is a checkbox to turn it off in the application, but the way ScaleTrains implemented the feature, that check box does nothing. It requires playing with a specific CV setting instead.)
As someone who has built a lot of turnouts, they are not that scary. Just get some Fasttracks stuff and go to town. BTW, Fasttracks will custom make jigs, so if they don't have a match, they could make one. I used to think making turnouts was insane now I quite enjoyed it.
Great video! I know you have done some locomotive reviews, but is there any chance you could do a Athearn VS Scaletrains pros/cons? Pulling power, price point, weight, etc.. Thank you!

Keep it up, bud! It’s going to be a very nice layout once you’re done!!👍👏
I love the switch lock idea! I have a bunch of old CR switch lock sitting around and we'll now I can put them to good use.

I'll be there friday! LOL!
I saw a video about that locomotive at the bottom of the river the other day. Very interesting.
You have a link you could email me? Didn’t know a video existed!

Looking really good! Can’t wait for the next update. BTW love the four axle.
Peco makes a curved turnout also

Awesome to hear about that! Especially the code 70 track! I’ve got a TON of it on my layout.

A lot of people say that… I just don’t know that I believe you! Lol! 😂

That would be cool. Check out my review of the Athearn SD70MAC. I go into it a bit in that one. (not a deep dive though)
have you tried eBay?
I have. There was nothing. At least at the time.
