Thank you, as a beginner in karate (white belt after 4 months since start) I find the clips very useful. The explanations are crystal clear, the kata techniques are cut down to the basic elements.

You are an excellent teacher. I will follow your instructions, memorize the names of movements, and practice the way you teach. All your movements, so well explained, will make a better golfer of me, with stronger legs, better hips movements and concentration. At 75, I need to keep all of this well oiled.. Merci

Not that this guy isn't authentic, he is, he's great and this is a great breakdown.

Something just dawned on me as someone who progressed from Shotokan to American Kenpo (long story!). This is in light of your recent videos on Kenpo. In Kenpo’s beginner kata, Short Form 1, all of our movements are retreating & we only block (no striking). The idea is that it’s a beginnner’s kata and that as an absolute beginner, distance is your friend. In Heian Shodan, though, you advance into the opponent with first Gedan Barai and then Oi Zuki. However, advancing into the opponent’s space and striking doesn’t happen in Kenpo until Long Form 1-our 2nd kata! The idea is that now you’ve built up a skill level that allows you to do so. You step into the opponent with a Gedan Barai and Gyaku Zuki combination. Interesting contrast in how the 2 styles handle beginner level kata training!

Hi Yusuke, thanks for the tutorial, you explain it very good! I'm training 4 months Shotokan Karate, I'm 9th Kyu and a beginner. I'm practicing the Heian Shodan. I'm still struggling with the speed and the stances.... About two weeks I have my first JKA Tournament in the Netherlands. But I do only the Heian Shodan Kata. This tutorial would help! Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱🙋🏻‍♂🌷
