The human mind is indeed a powerful thing. I thinking you can do something versus thinking you cannot do it has such a powerful effect on performance.

This is awesome, thank you for all the great and practical knowledge you share. I actually saved a quote from the full episode that I always go back to:
"You can actually get better from stress if you’re in the ocean of knowledge that stress grows you."

We see this all the time in insomnia! People get into a feedback loop, where they stress and think about their sleep (not sleeping) and it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy of not sleeping! Always love the Huberman Clips!

    Summary:
Huberman discusses a study that explores how different mindsets about stress can impact performance and health outcomes. The study had one group of participants listen to a lecture that emphasized the negative effects of stress, while another group listened to a lecture highlighting the positive effects of stress. The results showed that those who learned about the enhancing effects of stress experienced improvements in work performance, even on tasks that were not particularly challenging. On the other hand, those who learned about the diminishing effects of stress did not show any improvement. This suggests that our cognitive appraisal of stress, whether we believe it enhances or diminishes performance, can actually influence how our bodies respond to stress.

Thank-you, it makes total sense that if people have no control over the stressors in their life, a positive outlook would yield positive responses. I wonder if factors such as recognizing patterns of stress, their source and/or if the stress is chosen or inflicted would impact the results of those studies.

Interesting topic. In my personal experience, the only time stress became destructive or reduced “performance” is when the source of the stress was a loss of morale, or in other words, a loss faith that I could achieve positive outcomes with any action (which the stress response might otherwise enhance). As a result, there is no anticipation of reward or experience of success to mitigate it.

Great video. What you can also extrapolate from this is that what you believe about a thing, and how you interpret it, has a lot to do with how you will respond - mentally, physically, and emotionally.

I struggle with overthinking because of the nature of the work I do in the thought economy like many others, everything can be rethought and improved (9-5 doesn’t work in the brain where ideas marinate), and often it feels easy to ride the wave of stress. On a good day its like an awakening when I clear that stress hurdle but when it happens like an avalanche in different pockets of my life, it is debilitating. I feel that controlling stress is a bit like controlling a sports car, you have to evaluate the terrain, acknowledge the strengths and weaknesses of the vehicle then decide how to move forward. I used to work nightshifts under do or die deadline pressure for about 15 years and survived it using antihistamines to force sleep and stimulants to keep me awake. I was great at my job but it was hard to get my brain to perform for non-work things, the pressure of work propelled me forward at work but held me back in day-to-day life. Sleep deprivation, even by lack of quality, has to be the worst level of stress because your mental capacity to process normal bumps in the road become more of a challenge.
Really value your content at Huberman Lab, just wished I saw it years ago.

Is there a meditation for this? I mean after the psychological sigh. After my Nidra… after my 10 min of sun. After my Tabata HIIT. 😅 I’m stressed. I want to be chill with a growth mindset. Seriously. I need to start having fun. I used to be sooo fun. 👈🏼

Of course there is, but not a special type of meditation, what you need is "normal meditation". You just need to stay there for sufficient amount of time, believe me, 1 hour of meditation is not that much, it should be our goal to survive nowadays. Trust me, once you get along with this habit, you will get kinda addicted to meditation, just like we get easily addicted to social media and instant pleasures, the difference is that it's no instant, it will take a month or so. Believe in the process, meditation can do miracles with our mind
