  • Rip out the electrics cupboard and build a mock up steps as a return companionway. I’m keen to see if this works because in my head it does. Then on to layout design

Surely if the steps came down in the centre you could have a cupboard on both sides,

Yeah, I don't understand the need for the steps curving around - seems like a waste of space to me. Also looks like it requires more bending down to get in and out

Love all the testing and adjustments for ergonomics and ease of use. Suggest going up and down with shopping in 1 hand, shopping in both hands, a cup a tea or beer or even a plate of food. Might be an idea to get wasted on beer (for testing purposes) and see how easy it is to get up and down while drunk as a skunk.

☺ You save things because you might need them in the future (and you probably will) but I save things for the same reason and they are still unused years later. LOL Seriously though, test the step height for the little girls. Short legs! If they are too high they'll have trouble getting in and out till they grow more. Happy birthday, Rob.

Interesting video. The turning stairs are definitely the way forward for you - they are great for those with good balance and flexibility so you’ll find them easy to negotiate. With a decent rail placement they will be safer for the girls too so there’s less risk of them falling forward straight down stairs. Looking forward to the design stage now - the wiring and pipes are interesting but completely out of my knowledge frame!! Happy birthday to Rob! Have a great weekend celebrating 😊

Don’t think you want to stoop so much every time you enter and exit using back hatch. Also that first platform is way too big. The hatch top opening needs to also accommodate stepping down. Right now I see a lot of bumped heads, elbows, etc with your present arrangement.

In your decision making for the steps. You may want to keep in mind that traditional working narrow boats had straight steps down into the accommodation, they were practical, for a reason.

James, I think you should go back and study the video you made from the boat show in Crick where you found the boat with the inspiration for the entry stairs. Your prototype is way bigger and different from the beautiful solution in crick, especially your steps down. I mean, the whole installation, including the steps down, should be little more than 60 cm in depth from entry and in.

I’ve been thinking about the same steps ideas, but with an L shaped sofa/dinette tucked into it with the short section backing upto the entry/first step & electrics cupboard, with the long section of the couch down the port side. It’s a social space for guests when on the move, it’s where you keep your beers when cruising. You walk in looking over the couch like on a yacht, very cool

If the lower bow step is to be a 'turning step', it could be cut at an angle in the direction of travel, rather than jutting out into the room.

You have been great acknowledging all of us who have contributed to Project 58, for me I don’t have a problem with you painting over my name, I can only imagine others will feel the same. Your boat would end up like a poor Banksy graffiti board 🤣😂 Thanks for sharing all your hard work. 😊🤗 Kathy

so if you're going to have the kitchen first in through the stern doors then the dinette surely has to come next? who wants to be traipsing 20ft for seconds! so the galley is going to have to be u-shaped. then where do you appreciate the wood burner from? something i saw on an old boat for sale at VCM (Glynnmark on YT) was the bathroom in cupboards either side of a central corridor. they were a bit cramped but it did make me think about the deal with having young children on board when things like that can be 'sudden' or in multiples and the idea of a loo room separate from the shower room could smooth out logistical problems.

The big step at the stern would make a good place to put the inverter charger unless your gunna stick to your all in one systems.. i forgot to factor in the inverter charger space ended up loosing half my wardrobe. i wouldnt cut a hole for the washing machine so low down might sound awful on the spin cycle against the metal.. have a look into the fogstar batteries they are heated as standard meaning you can house them under the back deck gaining a little more space for storage under the steps.. great vid as usual 😁😁 keep up the hard work in this heat :)

When I watched y our mate trying to get out using the steps , I felt that the bannister should start 3/4s or half way of that upper step. because if you start it from the ( looking at it from inside the boat ) left corner of that top step , it will give you no room to manouver around it to get out , it would be a bit of a squeeze.

When the first two steps are angled your down movement is sooner to not bump your head.
The second step down gets more surface for more safety.

Calorifier...idea...single cold water pipe system. At each tap have a 3kw mini water boiler with temperature control so can be hot or cold. No calorifier...more space.....less pipe joints to leak in the future. Just a thought. ..

I think you should think very carefully about steps on the side , it will make everything very awkward gettin in and out cupboard building will also be very awkward . In my experience straight down steps are the most practical. Also a dishwasher , is tgat really necessary it takes up space and power . Just a few thinks to mull over , having stayed on many boats . These are things we noticed .

I’d love to send you some pics on day WhatsApp or any platform you use. The boat was built by a very good builder it actually won the Lionel Monk award at the AWA show, a bit more useful than the Crick award for pretty boat. Finally for ease of access your bottom step should be 2 not 1. Wishing you al the best with P58 and hoping to be able to give suggestions on design. Steve. NB Fiddlesticks 👍🖐
