      I think too that it s the starter the problem on the abarth . try to move it back and forward, if it s do nothing take a hammer and kick it two of 3 times. It must be ok and will start to bring your car to the garage. it s possible it soffered the heat after your track session. Change it , no big deal

    Sounds like the earth cable from the battery to the chassis has gone rogue. It's a very very common problem on 500's - the copper cables turn to dust with no age at all. I'd replace it with an upgraded item regardless if it's the problem or not. 👍

    Possible Abarth noise could be a stuck starter motor. Try putting it in gear, make sure the ignition is turned off, take the handbrake off, push the car back and forth about 3 or 4 inches, get back in the car, back in neutral and try and start. Good luck.

    One of the batt cells may have failed so you have 10 volts. OK to run dash lights but starter draw kills it. Let go of the key and it's back to 10 v so the dash cycles again. Stick a volt meter across the batt plus and neg to rule in or out.

    I understand where you're coming from with the X3. I think it's due to the mundane task you do on it, so you don't associate driving it with fun. You said it yourself, you use it when you do the boring stuff. My daily is an X5 and I really like it. As a daily driver, it does everything well. I also think it looks good, have a great stance on the 21" wheels and I love the tech in it. It can be sporty when I feel like tackling the backroads, but can also be a comfortable long distant cruiser. But despite all that, I enjoy driving my older Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Series more. Perhaps it's because I've had more fun on the journeys taken with it. The Land Cruiser has taken me further off the beaten track and conquered more terrain, to get to very beautiful and secluded destinations, that it creates more memorable memories. Plus I have personalised the Land Cruiser more, by enhancing it to be a capable overland rig, some done by myself, the rest by professionals. That is something that I have not done with the X5, apart from putting clear protection wraps on the headlights, it is as stock as the day I spec'd it from the dealership. Having said that, I do like my X5, and I do still look back at it after I've packed it. I just love my 200 Series Land Cruiser more.

    Definitely sounds like a new battery is needed, the exact same thing happened to my daughter’s Polo… one day it started the next day it didn’t - no warning at all, basically not theres enough power to engage the gears of the starter motor, apparently happens frequently with stop/start batteries once they drop below a certain percentage, try putting a jump pack on it to start, if it’s starts you’ll know it’s the battery.

    A common issue with Abarth's is the battery "cooking" in the engine bay as it does tend to get hot in there. This would reduce the life span of the battery so maybe that's the issue?

    Whilst I couldn’t hear it properly. It sounded like the starter motor spinning but no ignition. If so, I had a similar issue on my manual Toyota 86. It was the flywheel teeth which came loose off the flywheel - I guess the heat caused the welds to snap. As such, when you try to start it. The starter motor turns the flywheel ring but not the actual flywheel. My issue occurred during my last track day.
    Fix was to replace the flywheel.

  • @mattbates7099
    @mattbates7099 3 года назад

    1. Buy a cheap multimeter and test the battery voltage. A healthy battery should be about 12v +/- 0.8v. If it's 10.5v or lower, its best to replace the battery as one or more of the plates in the battery is most likely sulfated and requires too much work to bother fixing it.
    2. Buy/use car battery charger on trickle/maintenance setting during extended periods of non-use.
    3. You can also use the battery charger after testing with the multimeter to bring the battery voltage up to full charge (approximately 12.5v) and try starting the car thereafter.
    4. If your battery is fully charged and it still won't start you'll need to consider getting a mechanic to assess further. My guess in this case is that the heat has damaged the starter motor or perhaps an earth strap is loose.
    Good luck.

  • @fskof
    @fskof 3 года назад

    With the Abarth lets start with the basics
    1. Connect a battery tender to the battery. It’s possible the battery needs to be replaced.
    2. Check all of the battery terminals. Make sure all are on tight.
    3.You could also pull out the battery take it to a battery store and they will do a load test on it for free. If the battery checks out good. It might be a stuck starter. Place the car in gear and rock the car.
    Start with the basics because it won’t cost you any money and you will need just the basic tools for the battery removal.
    Good luck and let me know if you need more detailed instructions if the battery and starter are good.

    To add my 2 pence to the Abarth situation; if it was electrical/battery related then there wouldn't be any response from the gauges. The fact that they all light up and the center display goes through its start-up sequence shows that there is power going to everything. If it was the battery then there would be one single click, and nothing would light up. That continuous clicking sound is the starter trying to engage. Constantly winging it over, and probably holding the ignition on too long after the car's started(instead of letting it go right away) will burn it out. Plus the starters in those cars are pretty small and lightweight. It doesn't take much to kill them. This is the main reason why so many cars are going to push-button instead of the regular key.
    Also, I'm surprised to see a BMW in your collection, and that you actually like the car, considering some of the critical comments you've made over the years lol!

    Starter Engine Issues
    If you don't hear clicking when you start the engine, the problem may . If you hear clicking, but the engine doesn't crank, the starter might not be getting enough electricity. Using your owner's manual and a voltmeter, you should be able to test functionality

    Just sounds like a dead battery, that still has enough to turn on dashboard lights. Possible burned / overheated. Could be something else though

      i had a dead starter motor once years back and it sounded exactly like this. 2 bolts to remove. bought a reconditioned one. $80 fix.

      @@sickjohnson well...from Sam's description the overheating problem sounds electrical and that could lead to the faulty starter motor
