Not all flies are designed to imitate food. Fish, especially trout, can be triggered into taking flies out of aggression, territoriality or curiosity. Matt Nelson's Pink Dancer was designed with this in mind. This fly fishes well powered by a brisk 4-6 inch strip pause retrieve or suspended, static, beneath and indicator. When trout are focused on tiny zooplankton, flies such as Matt Nelson's Pink Dancer are worth a place in your fly box.

Besides what you said about the color being more of an attractor, do other versions of zooplankton become clusters like daphnia?Understanding that daphnia are considered zooplankton. When you do a zooplankton fly are you really doing a daphnia fly? Im just starting to consider using these types of flies but it seems because of all he bright colors that dont actually match the natural stuff all we are doing is calling them something else, thats fine, just a little confused!!!!! Do the natural colos work? love your Videos by the way!!!

      Hi Tim,
Great comment. In reality, it is most likely a combination of both scenarios. Some days we have better success fishing Blobs that match the color of the zooplankton, the trout are feeding on. The Blob may represent a zoo plankton clump or the color the fish are tuned into. On other days our Blobs are purely taken as an attractor that stands out in the crowd.
I also use more natural colors at times. I have a small olive leech I call the Daphina Leech that I use when trout are focused on the olive colored zooplankton. I will be featuring this pattern in an upcoming video soon.
Unfortunately, there are no absolutes in this sport, which is one of the reasons I love it, as there is always something to figure out or drive you crazy.
      Cheers, Phil
