This song is all about the end of what you knew. You have learned that it was dark and wrong, and you rejected it, or it rejected you. And now you're left to wander in the ruins and the wastes, alone and forgotten, with everything that once warmed you bleeding out into the Cold
Is it just me, or does it seem like they are intentionally trying to build meaning and symbolism in their words? Words that would be just words if you didn’t listen to their other songs, where they carry a different meaning. I don’t know for sure yet, but that’s the sense I’m getting.

@@Sapphire_Dicson_Official happy to share! Last December I was in a production of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale, which contains probably the most famous stage direction "exit pursued by a bear". At the time, I was coming out of a pretty deep depression, and in the play, the Bear is a symbol of strength, wisdom and justice. Anytime I see bears now, I'm reminded of that time of abundant love and growth. Those memories feel like being wrapped in a warm blanket :)
I've recently moved from Michigan to Arizona, and I'm kind of missing the thrill you feel when you step into the freezing cold, and this song brings me the same feeling, the oh hello's don't just make music, they make feelings and emotions that mix with the music. I can feel this song, and I can feel myself being pushed to the beat of it.
Hope you like your stay here in AZ. (It’s weird, since my parents also moved from MI to AZ, and I might move from AZ to MI for college. I dont know why I said all that but I did)
Well, if "Passerine" was about leaving behind a toxic, hypocritical Evangelical community, then this is about...? I'll leave the rest to you (don't worry, you won't be graded, lol).
L My current understanding is that this is also about the stagnation of the evangelical community, but more in the “it’s shallow, apathetic, and unwilling to accept change” sense. My favorite line, “You pave your Hades with precious stones. Make an heirloom to patricians and the rich alone” definitely seems to be about class imbalance, and the metaphor of someone getting cold and loosing feeling seems to be about becoming apathetic, likely either to God, or to other people, and knowing The Oh Hellos, probably both.
*Everyone else:* This song is really deep and profound with it's themes of the socio-economical impact of evangelicism and... *Me:* Haha pretty banjo twang tickles brain, serotonin go brrr
My sister introduced me to the valley when I was 5 and I am now 10 and don’t regret it I listen to the oh hellos everyday and I love there music with all my heart ❤️
I just wanted to point out one thing first which I love immensely. I was listening to cold and about half a minute in, I started noticing that i think I might have heard that melody before. I kept on listening and knew that it was definitely on Oh Hellos riff from a previous wind, but all of the Wind EPs work so well in merging together, so I couldn’t put a direct finger on the track. So I had to flick through Notos and Eurus and I found that Cold takes a riff from Passerine. I also saw multiple RUclips comments that noted that a Kindling, of Sorts, uses the chorus of Torches for its melody, which , besides from the incredible word play, got me so excited. It feels like as a folk band, they’re drawing on established oral and folkloric traditions that they reference in their contemporary work. But rather than being the song of Beowulf or such ancient oral traditions, The Oh Hellos are telling their magical story as the Oh Hellos themselves. Their music is the legend of their own bardic inspiration so to speak :) And that just blew my mind

Passerine has always been my favourite by the oh hellos, and I think this song has to come in a very close second it's so magical and each time I listen to it it grows on me more
I think this is talking about the hypocrisy of the church or organized religion as a whole, speaking of the "high price" of salvation and it's toll on you. The apathy of the church and the pursuit of the safety of your afterlife, rather than living freely and for the benefit of those around you. How your "subscription to heaven" brings apathy and hardens your heart.
Well you can’t say that the church generally teaches you to neglect the present and the people around you in your pursuit of salvation. It’s actually the opposite, you‘re supposed to bring God's kingdom to earth and live selflessly for others. I don’t think they meant to shed such a negative light on the topic of salvation, considering they're a Christian band.
