Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas on Thursday pardoned a man who was convicted of fatally shooting a protester during a Black Lives Matter demonstration in the summer of 2020, fulfilling a promise he made last year amid pressure from conservatives.
The decision immediately followed a pardon recommendation from the state’s Board of Pardons and Paroles, whose members are appointed by the governor. Lawyers for the man, Daniel S. Perry, argued that he had acted in self-defense against the protester, who was carrying an AK-47-style rifle.
Mr. Perry was sentenced to 25 years in prison in an emotional hearing last year in which prosecutors presented evidence of racist online comments he had made and said that psychological experts had found him to be “basically a loaded gun.” As the pardons board considered the case, lawyers with the Travis County district attorney, José Garza, met with the board to argue against a pardon.
Under Texas law, a recommendation from the board is necessary before the governor can grant a pardon.

I’m sick of the lawlessness of the GOP
Abbott for prison FOREVER ‼️🤬
Someone should stand their ground against Abbott for putting all their lives at risk like the children in Uvalde.

Abbott is just being needlessly cruel to pander to the base.
It would be great if someone “stood their ground” with Greg Abbot.

Abbott is disgusting.
I think it is wonderful that I only need one word to comment on stories about Greg Abbott - and that word is "DISGUSTING". Works for every single news story about the guy.
It was a clear case of murder; he should have spent the rest of his life in prison.

Stop it Brett. There are tons of liberals in Texas. Please stop the "everyone in Texas" talk. Look at the vote counts. We detest Abbott. We detest the gun situation. We work our butts off to defeat these politicians. Trump has normalized generalizing, and name calling so all of his followers copy that and do the same. Let's not have the liberals do this too, because it makes us (Texas liberals) defensive, like I am being right now. If I ever state this, folks come on and tell me to move from my state. I have a professional license here and I am not going to ever take another freaking test to practice someplace else. Plus I live in a blue city in Texas and I love much about Texas.

Unfuckingbelievable. Cruelty is rewarded. I voted blue yesterday. 💙

Its crazy how someone in his condition, so old and vulnerable, would also have no empathy for minorities. He's learned nothing from life.

Perry won't last the rest of the year before his name is in rhe news again. They gave him a pass to do it again
Always wondered what the definition of "stand your ground" really is. Now I know: It means "go looking for someone to shoot."
Btw I resent the allegation that "everyone in Texas" has an orgasm when someone commits a shooting. That's a deliberate gross mischaracterization of many Texans including my friends and family.
Most other places, they call that aggravated murder
It’s open season on the political opposition. If Trump wins this will be universal. Arm up !!
All these 2A folks that romantically yearn for the "Old West" and "Frontier Justice" conveniently forget that it was IN the Frontier West that people were required to stop by the Sheriff's Office and drop their firearms off before they continued into town. That society at the time saw the LACK of firearms as a sign of civilized society and aspired to creating a sense of safety that would allow for conflicts to be resolved without violence. That's what American's USED TO aspire to.

Sicking!
Very sicking.
I've lived in Texas my entire life (and I'm old). This odd confusion around freedom in this state has been going on for a very long time. In 1989 I wrote an op ed piece for a newspaper defending a group of Wiccans who one of the local Baptist churches was trying to force out of town. What these Baptists were doing by using the city government to violate the Wiccan's First Amendment rights was disgusting.
One night at 2 a.m., one of these "Christians" broke into my home with a gun and attempted to kill me. I had a shotgun handy, he had a handgun, so he is dead and I'm alive. Because it is Texas, there was never a question of who was in the right and I hand no legal problems as a result. The interesting thing is that, even back then, a lot of folks wrote the newspaper trying to make me the bad guy, seemingly suggesting that if I didn't want to be attacked I should just not express my opinion in the newspaper. I've carried a gun every day for years, now.
I have no problem with guns. I grew up in the 1950s and 60s when everyone had guns. Loaded guns were hung on the wall on open racks. Got my first .22 rifle when I was seven. But my dad drilled gun safety into me so well that I should never point a gun at anything I did not intend to kill, that I was never able to point even a toy gun at someone. I do have a right to protect myself, and the only way to do so is with a gun. These confrontations happen so fast that all law enforcement can do when they arrive is investigate your murder.
Abbott was clearly wrong in pardoning this guy. Guns should always be defensive, not offensive tools. Sadly in Texas we now seem to be living in a wild west that didn't actually exist here outside of John Wayne movies.
Yep. In the real wild west you check your guns in with the sheriff when you rode into town.
@@havable It's a simple calculation for me. Had I not had a gun at hand when the guy broke in, I would be dead today. Here's the stats. There are 466 million guns in the U.S. in 2024.
There were 18,874 firearm related homicides in the U.S. in 2023. Approximately 0.0041% of the 466,000,000 guns in the United States were used in murders in 2023. Guns are not a significant problem in the U.S.
Abbott, Could Care, LESS!!!!!!!! THAT'S, HIS KIND OF GUY!!!!!!!!!!!! IT'S RITTENHOUSE, ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!
Purely for political gain.
this is exactly why self-defense laws in canada require a person to have made every attempt to remove themselves from a situation before self-defense is justified. and, even then, the defender must only use the force necessary to allow themselves to safely flee the situation.
Yeah, let's not take advice about self defense from Canada.

What a surprise.
Absolutely not self defense. Stand your ground is when the bad guys come to you.
They sell it as "when the bad guys come to you" but they applied it for Zimmerman who stalked and hunted a child, tackled him, and murdered him. They called that "stand your ground."
They also put a woman in jail for firing a warning shot instead of killing her ex who was violating the protective order. If she'd have killed him, Stand Your Ground still would not have applied because she's black.
Iadarola first-class verbing: the MAGA world WWZ'd themselves through the door.
Not all texan r like that .
Too many are...
If Foster had seen Perry drawing a firearm in a crowd and been the shooter instead of the victim, his chances of being found guilty despite raising a self-defense argument would be about the same as what actually occurred; the only significant difference between the actual and hypothetical scenarios being tried in court is Perry's social media activity prior to being in the situation where he shot and killed Foster suggests he was seeking confrontation which makes the bar for defense counsel that much higher to prove (self-defense is an affirmative defense, it requires admitting to the act and intent to commit it as well as testimony or presentation of evidence to support that the defendant was in a situation that justified use of lethal force and was not the party to initiate violence).

Nice political spin, just like the original prosecution. SMH. The Gov only re commends the pardon. The Pardon and Parole Board reviews the actual evidence and makes their determination. BTW, only a third of the total recommendations are approved. Nice try.
In some cases the stand your ground or self defense laws are for good. Like on my case if my ex came back and wanted to try and kill me again I could stand my ground and not be charged for anything that happens to my ex during the attack.
They only apply Stand Your Ground if you're white and shot a person of color. Trayvon was the one who had Stand Your Ground rights, because he was the one being suddenly tackled in the night with no explanation. But his murderer got to have "stand your ground" rights. And yes, his murderer was also a person of color, but the racial hierarchy places the murderer higher on the "chain" than the child he murdered because of their respective skin colors.
So because he made thoae claims, he forfeits his right to self defense? 🤔
They did it for Kyle
