  • John Cullum explains how the creators of the show, Joshua Brand and John Falsey, began to develop the characters based on the real people playing the parts.
It worked, it made the characters very real, but by the third season, Brand and Falsey began to run out of material. Em remembers the nightmares that various characters began to have, but delights in the episodes where John Cullum was actually singing.
Cullum reveals that the show was never shot in Alaska, and explains more about why using an actor's personal life begins to hurt a show, and why everyone was sad, of course, but relieved when the show ended.

I worked on the show as an extra or featured extra many times. John was such a gentleman, everybody liked him. The bar scenes were fun. The jukebox had record titles that were made up, and I can't repeat them! I worked on episode #7 in a studio in Bellevue, WA, then the show got picked up and moved to a large warehouse studio in Redmond. You got a big bus and went to Roslyn, WA for exteriors. A lot of fun! I can't believe how young everybody looks now. Those were great times. The Cisely episode was my favorite. I can recall shooting there for several days in a row which was unusual ...

Vincoeur means capture one's heart. And that is just what John Cullum did in Northern exposure - he captured every viewer's heart.
He also does in in any role he plays.

Now I see why Holling was such a down home likeable character. Mr. Cullum I think the character fit you like a glove, because you were just being you and that series would not have brought the magic into our living rooms the way it did without Holling Vincoeur! I too, own all seasons on DVD and watch them frequently. The magic lives on. Thanks John and Emily.

What fun! I fell in love with Northern Exposure when I was in 7th grade, and have re-watched as an adult. Love to hear from the actor behind Holling--really great! The show, all it's amazing actors, the quirky characters, unique setting truly stole my heart. You all are amazing!

As a Kickstarter supporter for the project started by "Ed" and the video displayed to the right....it is looking more and more likely that we will have more NX episodes! In any case, it is delightful to see you again in these videos. My wife and I have purchased NX and watched it at least twice every year since it was stopped. It is as great today as it ever was.

Lived in Alaska & went to friends house where there was TV so we could watch Northern Exposure. We lived across a frozen river off grid

Speaking as a NE fan , I sort of liked it when the show really got into the characters' individual personalities. The thing I liked most about the show, however, was the wide range of ages of all the characters and how their lives were so intertwined with eachother. Thanks for your great work and all the pleasure I had and still have watching the series. I have all the seasons on DVD.

I Love that series and miss it dearly . John Cullum, now stars on the weekly sitcom,
' The Middle' as Patricia Heaton's, father in-law, but not on a regular basis.

Despite what YOU thought of this vlog, John....I felt that it was in the top 20 of ALL of them (and the vlogs are over the 100 mark now!). This was such a revealing, honest recollection of the N.E. years; especially what you had to say about the progress of script writing on the show. AND..you, Em, are so great at feeding him the good questions (Johnny Carson would be proud of you, Emily.)

    @Starshoals...
i have the second season which came in the form of a yellow parka. i bought it back in 2004. plus one of the promo photos of the cast i have framed and hang on my wall. my late great father loved the show and john as holling too, AND...i will forever carry lasting memories that are warm and comforting of the time that we spent together watching it all as it orignally ran and later on in re-aired broadcasts. the area of cicely-roslyn and the cabin of joel-rob is like my g&g one.

I loved the stories, the characters, the actors, the plot, the scenery...except the laundromat. Great series. I have to agree that there seemed to be a loss of that “sparkle.” I almost suffered a panic attack!

As far as I'm concerned, the show ended when Rob Morrow left. Up until then, I have no problem saying it was one of the greatest shows ever.

  • @ericscottstevens

The original producers (Brand and Falsey) ran out of ideas? geesh really? there were thousands of story arcs available. Barry Corbin also stated the shows declined in the final season, he felt it was not great but he thought NX have gone on for 1 more season into the 1995-1996 era.
Still we got over 100 episodes to rewatch again and again.
Sad to see some cast members have already passed many years ago.

I personally find that anything after around the mid-way point of Season 4 is unwatchable. Anything prior to that - especially seasons 2 and 3 - are magic.

Sorry to say., the women who seems to want to interject incessantly adds nothing....nothing....to the interview. Would have been so much better without her. She clearly doesn’t have an y idea of Northern Exposure. I have no idea of why she was on the set. The interview loses so much with her interruptions. Sorry, just sayin’.
