  • I finally sewed up this Simplicity trench coat pattern! It’s light, open, and a great transition piece for late Summer into Fall/Autumn. ☀️🍁
As with many sewing projects there are many different ways to sew a garment. I mostly followed the pattern instructions here. If in doubt, refer back to the Simplicity pattern instructions for your chosen view.
And *trust your instincts*. You are a great sewist!

I just made the A version of this in a cream linen and your step by step was SUCH a great addition to following the pattern. One change I'll make next time is using feather weight interfacing. I used lightweight and it still feels a little too stiff for me. I also made a few other changes- I made the belt loops MUCH bigger after seeing how small the pattern was. I like the chunky loops with the wide belt. I put the loops on the back of the jacket rather than the sides (again just personal preference), and I sewed down the front "flaps." I think the weight of the interfacing and fabric made them floppier and it was a sensory issue for me. Seeing your fabric and how it hangs was a super helpful comparison. Thanks again!!

I am so glad this was helpful!! I love these observations and notes, too. So many variations on how things can look with different fabrics and interfacings. Thank you for sharing your experience here! 💜🙏

This was so fun and relaxing to watch. I especially appreciate how you focussed on all of the details in this make and took the time necessary to video so those details were easy to see and understand. Well and beautifully done.

Such a beautiful coat!! I usually go for the usual black or navy when making a coat. I am on the lookout for chocolate or light brown now!! The music was lovely especially backyard magnolias which I never heard before. I had to use Shazam to look this up!!)

If possible I recommend block interfacing, i.e. interface the space/area where your facings and collar, etc will be cut out. Then you only cut once and the interfacing and fabric is guaranteed not to warp/stretch. Just makes it easier. I love what you have done with this pattern.

You’re so right, it can definitely save time. I block fused on a recent coat project. 💜

Hey Cleo! I'm happy to have found your channel again! How are you liking your Bernina? I have an older model (Artista 730e) and love it. I got mine used, but it sews really well. I see that you have a Barbie Box for storing your presser feet. Very cool. Love your style and aesthetic, it's really great watching you presenting your garment sewing projects. Thanks for posting.
