Hey mike, my name is maxwell. Im 17, Im a law related relative to Leo Fender, my grandpa was lucky he and his pals used to go to his little workshop at his house in the garage and there they would watch him make the classic tele as well as go to church together and play together. He would then marry my grandpas sister and by law she would be married to him. I have nothing to do with the modern Fender family, however it is still very cool and i love to share that bit of my family history. But anyways, i love your videos everytime you make one, and i cant wait for the next. Have a good one man!
Leo's my fourth cousin, three times removed. It's a bit distant but the blood relation is real. Happy you have that connection to Leo, even in some ways closer than I am!

Would you prefer a strat, a telecaster, a jaguar, jazzmaster, or something else ? Music is a life-changer, Bruv. It certainly changed my life (for the better.) minor pentatonic scale for solos and “economy-class” power chords with distortion (root-note plus its “fifth” on a neighbor string. ) With JUST those things, you can rock out and sound good: learn covers and write songs

I love my comanche tribute. I just got a will ray Z coil bridge pickup to replace the stock bridge pickup
Will Ray also used that in the middle position of his signature ASAT Z-3 such that he could lower the middle pickup (for more picking space) while still having enough output.
I think Leo's final Tele design was the one that Fender never built, partly because it just wasn't possible at the time. Fortunately G & L built it as the Espada. The original version with the split coil pickups is an amazing guitar.
Clarence was an innovator his whole life, the ASAT you demoed today is a testament to that.
Great breakdown, Mike your an excellent and exceptional great communicator. I have gone on a guitar collecting binge the last 18 months or so. It's costly $$$ but thankfully Sweetwater has a 36 month payment plan. I'll be 67 soon, so I've grown up with my guitar heroes as well as the guitar s they loved and played, which of course influenced my idea of my collection. My latest purchase is the Squier Classic Vibe 70s Tele with a wide range Humbucker in the neck and tighter or brighter wound single coil in the bridge with 2 Volume and 2 tone knobs. The guitar looks and feels and plays magnificent, despite the hands which pluck the strings. All that to say that We should indeed thank the musical gods for Leo Fender and Les Paul for there insight into our guitar world. Hats off 2 Leo some 74 years later for the design and ingenuity of The Telecaster in 1950. It beat me to this world by 7 yrs. PS. I was fortunate enough to see Muddy Waters in concert with Johnny Winter in 76, Muddy played with such passion and fury. And as for The Albino Johnny Winter, we'll, I have the EPIPHONE Firebird in my collection solely due to his and to a lesser part , Allen Collins influence on my life
I have always found it interesting that he was a part of all those guitar companies. Leo Fender himself was an interesting guy.
Tele's are the best. I had a butterscotch one in 1968. Now I have a Custom Shop Designed 1950's style limited-edition Telecaster with 3 Broadcaster pickups and vintage tuners. I'll never sell it.
I think the original Broadcaster was Leo's finest design - because virtually everything that Fender, Music Man, & G & L has done since has been a derivative of it - even the Strat. The Tele was revolutionary. The others merely have been evolutionary.
Does this mean that you know about Leo Fender's and George Fullerton's involvement with Music Man?
Really enjoyed this video. The Bluesboy was actually designed by Tim Page from the now closed Buffalo Brother's Guitars in Carlsbad CA. They did a small special shop only run, then it became a standard model as it was so popular. My favorite G&L's are the SC series, but I have a bunch from the '80s.
Correct! While Leo Fender @ G&L did NOT want to make a Telecaster body (he didn't want to repeat the past) -- It was Dale Hyatt and George Fullerton who pushed him to do the Broadcaster/ASAT in 1985. The Bluesboy didn't intro until 1999 as a Special Edition designed and sold by Buffalo Bros as noted above. Due to its popularity, G&L made it a full time model first appearing in the Catalog and Price Sheet in 2001. Since it's inception, the Bluesboy has been one of their best selling models.
I love the history of Leo and Fender guitars.. his impact made so much good music 👋 and still does
I've got a couple teles and strats but I always find myself reaching for my G&Ls. I adore my ASAT but my favorite Leo design hands down, is the USA-built S-500! It's not the most expensive guitar I own, but it's my favorite! It's killer!

I'm a Fender guy and was looking at a professional 2 telecaster.....then I checked out a G&L Fullerton ASAT CLASSIC with MFD . Bottom line is that G&L IS A MUCH BETTER BUILT GUITAR THAN FENDER AND IT'S ON STEROIDS ‼️
Ceramic pickups are actually colder than Alnico.
One of these days when I get the time and money for it. I want to try making my own pickups.
I am not sure what you mean, unless it is the fact that ceramic magnets do not increase inductance such that they produce more output without the darkness associated with hot pickups (Eddy currents are also quite significant with regard to darkness, by the way.).
I have an ASAT tribute and I love it more than any other guitar I've ever had
I think this particular setup, the S/H Tele in butterscotch with the black pickguard, was really popularized by Keith Richards. The Stones had a bit of a comeback in the 80s and 90s, so it's not that surprising the Bluesboy, in this finish in particular, would come out from G&L.

Hi Mike - I designed the G&L Bluesboy. Of course, not the first time someone slipped a Humbucker into the Tele neck position (think Albert Collins, Keith Richards, etc.). The inspiration actually came from back in 1973 I had a Fender Telecaster Custom, and I wanted to see how with G&L's quality build and incorporating the MFD at the bridge would work. Thus the Bluesboy. I did ask Seymour for his recommendation on the pickup so originally it was the '55 Seth Lover. Later, G&L would use a Paul Gagon designed humbucker which wasn't as dark. It's a toss up which is the better humbucker as everyone as their own choice and preference. But Paul's a good guy and before he retired he did a lot of great things for G&L. Also, in using the '55 Seth Lover, we had a ground plane issue that Tony Petrilla figured out and thus by the time we put into production both the solid body and the semi-hollow body versions everything was set. They were built as a Special Edition back in 1999 for our guitar shop, but it had such a great response with players that G&L made it a model around 2001. Since then it's one of their best sellers. Now I don't get anything like $ for it, but I will say the best reward has been watching players say the love the guitar. If you have any questions - feel free to reach out to me. Regards, Tim
With that neck pickup, when you say warm, I would say muddy! I have one and it's great just the humbucker is pretty muddy. The pickups are hugely adjustable by using a screw driver on each polepiece. You can make them sound like a fender by screwing them down. Also the they have a fantastic brass saddle on each string for perfect intonation. A unique design you didn't mention.

The G&L Espada was the last design Leo was working on before he died. Anderson’s did a video about touring their factory and the designs were still on his desk. They finally put the guitar out. Check it out. It is tele-ish.

I haven't played all of the models designed by Leo. I owned an American made Stratocaster for twenty years and loved it. The sound is what made me want one. Now I own a Thinline copy. It has the features I have come to believe make a superior guitar.
It has a bolt on maple neck with a maple fingerboard. That contributes to brightness.
The bridge is a plate that is screwed into the top and contacts a large area. The saddles are six individually adjustable pieces. They can go back and forth and up and down to be adjusted perfectly. It is a string through body design. Everything described are things that Leo created.
Pickup choices are subjective. Mine has two humbuckers. With the maple top, neck, and fingerboard, the brightness and resonance of the instrument combines with humbuckers, to create a noiseless thick, yet clear sound on all strings.
If I were ever to order a G&L from Fullerton, I would need to try all of their different neck sizes to be sure I got one that was perfect for me. They do that as a standard part of building them, not a custom shop option. That is what makes G&L special and better than Fender in 2024.
Fender's bass designs were legendary too.

Glad to have picked up a Tribute Bluesboy Semihollow which is currently getting a setup and new nut. Love the feel of the guitar and will be swapping out both pickups to Lambertones shortly. It’s a solid guitar
I know people like the Bluesboy, but the MFD is a superior neck pickup imo.
The only reason why the look "stood the test of time" like you say,is because we have watched all of our favorite artists play them..and there favorite artists b4 them played them..if our favorite artists would have played a guitar shaped like a doughnut,that shape would have stood the test of time..its really that simple

My favorite Tele is a Schecter PT Standard.. It's your basic T design, but its neck has a 12 inch fretboard radius, which to me, makes it much more playable. Great video as always.
i owned a ‘95 G&L ASAT Special, that guitar could push an amp to its limits.

I've got to say the best Leo fender design is the original "tele." Without this design, would we really have everything that came after? When I think about all his designs, they all are just evolving of the last thing. For example, a strat is just a double cut tele with more contouring, 3 picups, and a trem arm. Now think of how to improve that as a guitar, you'd probably get a jazzmaster and so on. So, for me, the telecaster has to be the one.

For years the rumour was 'After Strat After Tele' when they first came out, but Mike is right, it was named after a missile. hahahahaha
Considering I live just a few miles from the G&L factory, it should be no surprise that I am a fan. Last year I picked up a Tribute ASAT Classic Bluesboy to go along with my LB100 and L2000 Tribute basses. Excellent instruments even though they are imports.
My2 main axes: G&L Bluesboy w/f-hole. and G&L S-500. Both are Honeyburst over solid ash from the late 90's. Scratches all my itches.
Seen a few ASATs for sale here in Australia. The Indonesian Tributes usually go for around $500, here. Great Guitars! Haven't got 1 yet. I like the "Special's P'ups. There is a single P'up version of the ASAT. A guy who runs a Studio was selling it, made in USA for $1,000. Can't remember what it's called. I've had a Fallout Tribute for about 5 years. I love that thing! P90 neck & coil tap of some kind on the bridge Humbucker. It's a Beast! Shorter scale. ❤
I think Seymour Duncan calls it the telegib, and im sure its his number one, probably already gave it to his son.

Your initial question of best guitar builder of all time I would nominate either Jose Ramirez or Antonio de Torres. Then you modify the question to best electric guitar builder which I agree has to go to Leo Fender and/or Lloyd Loar. Honourable mentions go to Les Paul, Paul Bigsby and Ted McCarty.
I'm not opposed to variations of the original designs . But too much redesigning doesn't lead to improvement , pickup choices and pot changes for me have been a minimal experience . I picked up a Squier stat affinity at a fleemarket for $30:00
It still had the plastic on the pickgard .
I've owned several Fenders over the years , but I have to say that this is the best of the bunch !

I prefer the ASAT Classic with the small Tele sized MFD single coils in both bridge and neck. (The ASAT Special is cool too because those are the original MFD pickups, not p90s).

I play bass also. I was never a fan of the Fender P-bass or the Fender jazz bass. The pbass was muddy and the jazz bass had no grunt. First bass I thought did it all was the Music Man Stingray. It was years later when I found out in was a Leo Fender design.

I think opposite. Single neck for warm twangy quacky clean.

@@romeou4965It's apples and oranges to compare it to a strat. Hss works for strats but you need the bite of a tele bridge single coil. And there is something special about a tele with a single coil bridge and a humbucker in the neck. Keith Richard's created some classic songs with one. As for me, give me a telecaster with traditional ss. But if I was to change it would be a p90 in the neck. 👍

Question for you, I see you were using the Tonex one pedal. I got that pedal and returned it as it did not play well with pedals. Can you show how you're using yours? It was my second time trying the Tonex. I'm still liking my HX stomp for main sounds using IRs and running analog drive pedals in front. It sounds huge. Any thoughts?
I own 3 Fender Tele's & an E.O.B. strat. There isn't a day when I don't play one of my telecasters.

I love G&l I own a Custom order of the BluesBoy you are holding, the H was a Seth lover and then their own version, the magic in those MFD, That’s the magic, on that guitar the middle position is to die for, I own 3 Customs HHS RMC, The blues boy I ordered, what arrived in woods and looks was outstanding, the blues boy is not No 1 , and the HHS RMC, With a maple cap and perfection, with my final being the S-500, I wanted MFD SSS., and not the strat;like CLF100 pic ups. Mary signed all the certificates, G&L hard case. They refuse to “grow” seem to like being a small factory, this has been , made clear by them. The Blues boy and the S-500 are two guitars like no other I own. Sadly, For all its high end quality, woods, history. The resale value, it is great to be a buyer. Mine will never be sold.

I think this video misses a couple of real innovations that Leo made with the ASAT. First, by choosing an ASAT Classic instead of a regular ASAT, you don't get the Saddle-Lok bridge, which featured a novel end-grain mounting point routed into the body for the bridge block, plus locking saddles. You also didn't mention the G&L bi-cut neck construction, wherein each neck was cut down the center and one half rotated 180 degrees to resist warping.

Wayne Charvelle is one of the best rags to riches builders ever. And Charvelle spawned the great Grover Jackson from his shop. Two titans out of nowhere, get my vote!
You should check your history. Wayne Charvel screwed with Grover Jackson such that latter launched his own company and made enough money to buy out his former boss within a decade. Crediting the management for the skill of the labor is almost always a mistake.
It's hard to beat a Telecaster. A Telecaster and Les Paul are the backbones of rock. The Stratocaster is my least favorite Leo guitar, unless it's a fat Strat with the 2 Humbuckers. Rivers Cuomo's Strat is pretty awesome. Fender should make an artist Mexican Fender for him just like his song and modeled after his blue guitar.
