  • Welcome to episode 4 of my new guest series, where in each episode features music majors, teachers, professionals or people of other professions watching/reviewing kpop, usually for the first time!
    Ep.4 features 2 Eastman School of Music DMs. One is a conductor/composer (and is in charge of ESM's new music ensemble) and the other is a music theory teacher (who has actually taught some of the main series reactors!).

      Ali Nav. What an interesting way yo put it. I so agree! It's like the regular reactors are Jedi knights in training but here be their Jedi masters, in full grasp of their body of knowledge.

    It's interesting how they pick out not just classical elements of the songs but also point of similarities to various genres of pop music, game music, film score etc. A benefit of having two reactors who obviously listen to lots and lots of music... and you've just added kpop into their repertoire :D

    I appreciate their input on U Need Me and actually agree that the dubstep was a bit much and it is repetitive but it’s still a cool, unique song. Glad one of them said it was their favorite even if it was just the bass he liked lol. SHINee wouldn’t be SHINee if they did what everyone else is doing :) it is, after all, just one of their songs.

    I hadn't heard Lee Jin Ah / Stairs before this and I definitely like it!

  • @CottidaeSEA

    Something I've noticed about how I listen to music is that while I enjoy complex songs, I really don't listen to them much. The reason is simply that they are complex. When I listen to music I often do other things, and complex songs are distracting in those cases.
    Some music is best listened to in a more isolated environment. When it's just you and the music.

    • @RoyalDecapitation
      @RoyalDecapitation 6 лет назад +4

      Cottidae The RUclipsr Adam Neely says that he always listens to music critically without fail, which really suggests that there’s no room for listening to music leisurely/in the background. But complex music can be so complex to the point where your brain just takes a back seat and enjoys it for what it is, so it really depends on your personal musical knowledge I guess.

    • @bawbp
      @bawbp 5 лет назад +1

      This is why I listen to kpop when I drive or do work. I dont understand the lyrics so it doesnt distract me. Whereas, when I listen to music in English, my mind constantly try to focus on the words 😂

    The intro to 'Stairs' absolutely fascinates me - it goes from some huge prog epic to a Vanessa Carlton-style pop song to a 90's sitcom theme all in the first 30 seconds. The album's great, but the baby voice takes a *lot* of getting used to for me.

    "I didn't feel the narrative structure was elaborating any new aesthetic possibilities, for me." :) How can you not love this guy!? And has this ever been said about a kpop song before? :) :) Well said: "This has opened my eyes to a whole new musical world." Excellent!!! :) And that's exactly why I listen to kpop, and Lee Jin Ah. Kudos, Umu! "Stairs" is even better than "Random." Great video! :) ...And just a quick mention of that outro - a tasty piece of BP! :)

    SM and JYP or kpop in general work with a lot of swedish composers. I think there's even a program where they send their artists to sweden to work with them. I've heard a lot of producers/composers say that they find kpop a space where they can experiment more.

    Fantastic! I loved their commentary and loved that they pretty much jammed to every song. Most of the time anyway. And I was so so so happy you used a SHINee song, they are amazing, even when they have songs written/composed/etc for them. Which is rareeee. They are pretty much their own selves. Thank you for this, i am looking forward to the next video, even though sometimes I get sick of girlgroups, I stillam waiting for it. Keep up the good work, and a big thanks to every reactor! And of course, you.

    12:44 “the pianist seems a little nervous” isn’t it because Jinah is doing both singing and piano improv?

    • @rakhun
      @rakhun 5 лет назад +4

      prob because you can't really get all her potential piano stuff crammed into a studio recording, it would probably sound like too much. Guess she condensed it for the sake of making it into a recorded pop song. I mean she usually shows us a lot more in a more relaxed kind of way when she's performing live so...

    4:12 I may have misunderstood your meaning but from what I heard you said SHINee just sings what others write for them? Because they've actually been writing their own music since 2008; Minho's penned the lyrics to his raps since their first album and later on the others wrote lyrics for full songs, and Jonghyun composed both Odd Eye and Prism.

    I LOVE their references! Esp the nods to Vijay Iyer, Oscar Peterson, Keith Jarrett and Billy Strayhorn's Lush LIfe. Any other kpop + jazz fans?
