Neheim is a district of Arnsberg in the Hochsauerland district. The place was fortified in the 13th century and served as a border guard for the County of Arnsberg and later for the Duchy of Westphalia opposite the County of Mark. In 1358 Neheim received city rights. The city belonged to the Hanseatic League. Industrial development began in the 1830s. A highly specialized metal industry developed with the production of lights in particular. On April 1, 1941, Neheim-Hüsten was created by merging the town of Neheim and the community (Freiheit) Hüsten. Neheim-Hüsten joined Arnsberg on January 1, 1975. The district of Neheim-Hüsten was divided into the districts of Neheim and Hüsten in 1983. In 2020 Neheim had 22,980 inhabitants.
Neheim is located in the northwestern part of the Hochsauerland district, directly southwest of the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park. It is located a little northwest of Arnsberg's core town in the Ruhr Valley. Neheim is located at the confluence of the Möhne and the Ruhr.
The federal autobahn 46 runs through Neheim and Hüsten.
The area of Neheim is 20,430 km².
Middle Ages and early modern times
Neheim was first mentioned in 1202. In a document of Count Gottfried II von Arnsberg, a Hermannus de Nihem and his sons Hermann and Wilhelm were named as witnesses. The place was fortified in the 13th century. On July 25, 1358, the town was granted city rights by Count Gottfried IV of Arnsberg. In addition to other families of knights, the von Neheim family belonged to the garrison of Neheim Castle.
By 1607 at the latest, the rifle brotherhood was formed from the militia of the time; today it is the oldest association of persons in Neheim. In 1807 the city was severely damaged by fire. The reconstruction was no longer arbitrary, but according to a "development plan" with straight streets.
It turned out to be particularly disadvantageous for the city that the textile production, which was relatively important in the 18th century, could no longer cope with the industrial mass goods in the first decades of the 19th century. The result was far-reaching agrarianization and impoverishment of the urban population. This changed in the 1830s with the settlement of the first metalworking factories.
Over time, the partly local and partly immigrant entrepreneurs specialized more and more in the production of (kerosene) lamps and the necessary components. Especially after the connection to the railway (Upper Ruhr Valley Railway) in the 1870s, this industry boomed. According to the Reich statistics from 1905, Neheim was the place with the densest concentration of lighting production sites; the number of people employed in this branch was exceeded only in Berlin. But, among other things, the competition from electric lighting ended this phase. Some of the entrepreneurs reacted before the First World War by converting to the new technology.
The first decades of industrialization changed the city little. Although there was already immigration from the Sauerland and the neighboring industrial areas, the majority of the workforce were locals, many of whom owned their own homes or even had a small part-time farm. This began to change from the 1870s and especially in the last decade before the turn of the century. In these decades, as in neighboring Hüsten, there was an above-average increase in population, mainly due to immigration. Between 1870 and 1905, the population increased at an average annual rate of 4.13 percent. The population grew from 2,947 to 10,074 inhabitants. Statistically speaking, the city remained a small town, but was, closely followed by Arnsberg, the largest community in the Cologne Sauerland.
Since the 1870s, population growth has caused the city to expand beyond the limits of the 1807 plan. New neighborhoods emerged.
