Motorcycle clutch adjustment
How to adjust clutch on motorcycle:
- above your back brake peddle there is a "bulge". That "bulge" is your clutch. The cable above the clutch has an adjustment on it, start by loosing the top nut on the adjuster, then tightening the bottom nut.
- Keep loosening and tightening the clutch cable until you find a comfortable grip zone. if you have loosened the top nut as far as possible the rest of the adjustments will have to be done at the clutch handle.
- to adjust the clutch lever loosen the large nut to the right of the lever. Tighten the hollow clutch cable bolt until desired grip zone.

My clutch was slipping in high gears and I didn't know why. I haven't been riding for 4 months because I don't have money to take it to a shop. I watched your video today and tried to adjust the clutch myself and it worked! Thanks to you I'm back to riding and didn't have to spend a dime!
Thanks, few suggestions: the tyre must completely stop when clutch is pressed and only starts moving when clutch is released. Clutch adjustment should be made when engine is cold because when its hot the clutch plates and wire expands causes more slackness after riding few miles. Theres one more adjuster nut right above the two nuts you loose and tight covered with rubber sleeve its used if we have not adjustable space left at the lever side adjuster nut. And the lever side adjuster nut threads should be more the 70% inside the lever so it doesn't have loose shaking movement.
Thanks, this was super useful. My shop always gives me back my bike with the clutch too tight.
this video was absolutely amazing I can't thank you enough! MC riders with tiny hands rejoice!
I think you've just saved me some head scratching! Level is fully out and slips like mad in higher gears! Going to get the tools out first thing in the morning!! ;)
Thanks for making this video man! I just got a ninja 250 and my zone was almost to the end like yours but after adjusting it like you sed it fixed it! I was so worried after buying it that it needed a new clutch
That’s exactly what I wanted to know , You nailed it . Thanks a lot ,
This is the best explanation of how to adjust your clutch. Super thanks for do it :)
Turn the key let the fuel prime for a couple seconds before you push your ignition.
+SelRod735 Thanks for the info. I have been doing that with no success. I wonder if I need to clean my injectors.
+PwnsJones it's an ECU hot start issue. My 636 does it when it's over 180*. Always starts on second try. I believe there's a recall that gets your ECU swapped. And it's pronounced Dee-cal like calorie
Decals are dipped into water until they start coming off the backing. Stickers have a backing that you just peel off & apply the sticker. Good video on clutch adjustments.
i like the way you explained that. very useful. thank you.
I LOVE the finger light flasher on the Kawis.
Very helpful, thank you!
Helpful video thanks man
A car stand on either side of the tire is what I've been using LMFAO
My Triumph mechanic took my cold bike out for a test drive and couldn't get it in 1st (I told him that it was easy to put in 1st after the bike was warm). He adjusted the cable tighter. Within a few days of driving it the damn cable Broke! He had put too much stress on the cable. Don't let your mechanic adjust your cable man. He made me get stranded 25mi from home. Also, carry an extra cable and tools for replacement so you won't get stranded like me. This is why I like hydraulic over cable.
You have fixed my ninja on many occasions. thanks pwns
Thanks for the video I did the same to my fz07 I got the clutch right where I want it. I need to adjust the clutch adjuster.
Thanks mate this helped a lot
5:08 I'm glad you cleared that up. LOL, just kidding man, since I laughed when you said it, I thought I'd poke a little fun. THANKS for the video, I'm adjusting my clutch cable and this did help me a bit.
eric, hey what do you know about the tron looking helmet?
Thank you so much for the stream my zr7s is the same no shop for me now. 😃
Question, I had my clutch cable replaced and it seems like I'm wasting more gas and bike rides are higher RPMs. Does that have to do anything with a clutch cable adjustment? Thx!
Hey man great video, i adjusted my cbr250r clutch as it was same as yours. Engages right at the end. Now it engages half way and ive made it so theres way less travel in the clu5ch if that makes sense but now theres alot of play in it after fully released haha, all good
weezy hi I have more travel as well, is there a fix for that or is it just supposed to be like that?
Same lol. Not sure if my clutch cable is stretched and if I need a new one or not
Dope! Thanx 4 the knowledge. 💯. Subbed. /sgk23.
Nice bike
Lovely video...
When u press the clutch full in 1st gear , the rear wheel keep on rotating ... IS IT OK ??
I m afraid, of clutch burns ...
That's fine. My brand new 2014 Ninja 300 ABS did that straight from the dealership. I've asked them about it too and they confirmed.
+DISHES On2wheels thanks
Need to ask sir. If gear suddenly loose and went back in gear during riding... Is it the clutch cable problem? Please help me out 🙏🏾.
In neutral, is that normal that rear tyre moving? Mine not moving after a couple years using bike.
Oh shit your live in Alberta Sweet I'm in Saskatoon SK
Good vid. I got a Ninja 250, the clutch also grips only near the top. I don't understand who would adjust it like that.... It makes it hard to play with the clutch.
my bike is unable to roll when in gear and the clutch is pulled in.. but I can roll it when it is in neutral. the bike is off.what is my problem? this is my first bike and I have no idea.please help.
adjust the throttle play. when you start your bike it shouldn't sound like that at all. it sounds like it's starving for fuel, either make some adjustments to your idle or adjust throttle. if you have done that, then you need to look at your fuel injectors.
How to Adjust Clutch on Motorcycle I'm 15 I live in ontario Canada and I can't wait till next year when I'm 16 and get my learner's permit i have a yamaha seca 400 that me and my dad are working on : )
This is not how you adjust a clutch. This is how you improperly set clutch free play.
That's the problem I faced with my friend's honda cb hornet 160
The clutch engages right at the top and the bike was moving at 3-4 kmph at the beginning of fiction zone inspite I gave 4k of RPM!
I thought the wheel shouldn’t move when the clutch is disengaged ?
so the second I pull the clutch, that lever on the engine moves, but the clutch doesn't grab until you move it more. is this normal ??
Dude, you can absolutely put the bike on the rear paddock stand by yourself, I have no idea what the wood is for.
Leave the bike on the side stand, put the rear stand under the swing arm/bobbins and push down on the back of the paddock stand; the bike will stand up straight then and the other side of the swing-arm will sit into place.
Grab the rear seat with your other hand if you want, you can hold it there all day with no real effort at all.
Hahaha we are guna clutch the adjust peg today..
You definitely don't need 2 people to put the bike on a jack. I've been doing it myself for years with multiple bikes. Great video though!
mine has alway started in first RIP. sounds like. plug cleaning time.
Nah injectors I reckon. I had original plugs and mine was still starting first go but who knows
my clutch is a bit stiff, it's difficult to pull my lever in, how would I go about changing that?
lube your clutch cable then it will pull in like butter
Sean Davies, lubing the cable as Jon said is one way. If that doesn't work you can change the clutch springs for softer ones.
In the beginning of the vid you said that the clutch doesn't engage fully if you LET GO of the lever. I have the exact opposite problem. If i pull in the lever as far as possible, the wheels aren't 100% disconnected of the engine. So if i were to pull in the clutch all the way, and get in the highest gear it will stop the engine eventhough i pulled the clutch in all the way. If anybody understood what i was trying to say, pls respond!!
I have the same issue on my CBR125R. Have you figured the solution? When my bike is on stand, when I put it in gear, even though clutch is fully pressed, the wheel spins crazy. And my grip zone is just at the beggining of pull (as shown in video before fix).
"I'm not a tranny guy" -PwnsJones
i adjusted my clutch on my ninja 250 and now the actual clutch is super loose. how do i fix that?
Adjust your lever nut far away your lever
I get a lot of play after adjusting my clutch. Am i doing something wrong?
Sam Queen same here, have you found a solution or is that normal?
Watch your foot haha
Don't you have a lever play after adjusting the clutch ?
NinjaCruza I do have lever play, is that normal?
So is the grip zone the point where the clutch disengages the transmission when u pull the lever in or is it.thenpoint where u start moving when u let yhe lever out from.a stop?
interlaced video?!
To be safe call them stickers. 😅
I think you need to adjust the lever on your clutch cover.

You enjoying the 300 Mr.Jones?
+Colt Green I am, keeping it real for the ladies as per usual. Cheers!
what the hell is a grip zone
When you pull in or let out the clutch lever, the range where you can feel the clutch start to grab.
Lever all the way in is outside of the grip zone (clutch fully disengaged, feels like neutral). Then there's the grip zone where it starts to grab (engage. power is being transmitted to the rear wheel). After it's fully engaged the rest of the travel on the lever is free play. Does that help?
Bueller
Dee-CAL like Cal Berkeley. Who ARE these people who say otherwise. Surely they say it in jest!
Whole lot of talking about nothing
Funny how you feel confident to give a 'how to' to adjust a motorcycles clutch cable but you can barley put your motorcycle on a rear stand confidently and by yourself?
