  • How to replace the surround on a 10" speaker. This is also called refoaming a speaker but I prefer the rubber surrounds.

    It not only aligns the cone, it also seals the "high pressure zone" from the "low pressure zone". Nice repair, my dad had to do the same thing to his Infinity Kappa 8 System :)

    Great Dino! You are a man of many talents. I have repaired speakers all my life. I use to use white glue and tissue paper and then paint the repair black with model car enamel. Your fix was just like a speaker repair shop at a fraction of the cost! Thankz

    The satisfaction of fixing stuff yourself is hard to surpass. We throw away too much good stuff and it's nice to know one less thing gets tossed into the landfill when repair it. My grandfather was of this mindset and I love having his old parts bin where he kept all sorts of hardware, fittings, connectors, etc. Everytime I use something out of there for a repair, I think of him looking over my shoulder...probably taking Christ's name in vain because I didn't do it the way he would have, but hopefully proud nonetheless.

    My friend just dropped a stereo to fix he was given today. Took off the speaker covers to discover some bad speaker rot on some good speakers. Coincidence you have just posted this. Thanks.

    Nicely done! if you replace foam surround with rubber surround, you will not notice much difference in sound as the enclosure is still the same and agree that rubber will outlast the foam surrounds over time. Good work mate!

    Would you use the same adhesive for the center? The center come off of mine. I guess you would call it the cone..? It doesn’t effect the sound but it’s the jensen (eagle) logo on a concert speaker. So, it effects the look/display of speakers.

    I had my Snell speakers "refurbished" by a reputable local stereo seller/repair shop. Are they then considered still a Snell? And, if done correctly, would they still have same sound quality/specs than before repair needed ?

  • @tengelgeer

    I would NOT assume it to line up correctly automatically... It rarely really does and a minute misalignment of the new surround will upset the alignment. On a normal speaker you might get away with it but certainly not on a subwoofer... It will look like it's fixed but the voice coil will still hit the magnet on higher volumes.
    I used to glue the cone first, try to let it align automatically and secure it temporarily with a handful of cloth pins. then you can try to see if the alignment is right by pushing it by hand. And it rarely is the full range. Now the big adjusting starts until you have it fully aligned. And one it's aligned you can glue it piece by piece by removing some pins, apply glue, and and them back (or even more). And yeah, found out wood glue is just perfect :D

      Your description of your process is unclear. Shouldn't you just cut the dust cap off and shim the coil?

    • @kwacz
      @kwacz 9 месяцев назад

      YES!! otherwise it is possible that it could be misaligned. shim it. then after everything is dry remove shims and replace with a new dust cap.@@rm9308

    Something I learned from my dad is if you have any small rips in the cons(fabric ones at least never tried on the plastic style ones) you can use clear nail polish, I had to fix one of my Kenwood 9 by 5's doing that about 15 years ago and it's still holding strong.

      He uses Weldbond in this video, but I'm going to research further since he also says rubber is better than foam, which is absolutely not true for his indoor application.

  • @LionWithTheLamb
    @LionWithTheLamb 7 лет назад +5

    Rubber Surrounds are better for longevity, but foam is superior for sound quality. Today's foam surrounds are far superior to those in the past.

    • @rm9308
      @rm9308 5 лет назад +1

      Exactly. I found the same info very quickly when researching how to fix a speaker. His absoluteness in his advice here is ridiculous. Rubber is denser than foam (hence the longevity), but that means it will be less responsive to the subtle dynamics of good music. Rubber surrounds were developed to withstand the rigors of outdoor applications and car audio challenges.

    Nice job! Try Beastie boys Intergalactic for a woofer test next time lol! About to re-glue the surround on an infinity sub - someone used Flex Seal and it did not form a strong bond. I'm going to use Gel Superglue (CA Glue) as i read that's usually what is used by the manufacturers.

  • @charleyweinhardt

    I'm sure this repair was more than great, and perhaps the manufacturer doesn't actually recommend it, but it might be a good idea would be to use a very fine 300 plus grit sandpaper just on the perimeter of the new surround where it's being applied to the speaker just to ensure a perfect Bond with the product. Although I imagine it would be more likely for a failure to be with the speaker and the product as opposed to the new surround and the product🤔🤷

    I have a bunch of speakers that need repairing. I have watched dozens of videos on how to do it, but none of them mentioned anything about the ability to use rubber. They also said it was very hard to center it, (let a professional do it, in other words) but you didn't seem to have any problem at all? So now I'm wondering if I should send them off for repair or try to replace the foam with rubber myself?
