I don't trust any govt agency in their "testing" of anything. I learned to just pay attention to what my plants are telling me and learning which plants are nitrogen loving and which ones aren't. Companion planting is also a must. No tomato horn worms when you plant basil in between plants. Also put garlic and onion on each side of your potato bed and you get no potato beetles. Keep up the great work guys! I love that you aren't suffering from the "more" syndrome that a few homesteaders started out as small and then lost the charm.

I just took a lot of my last tomatoes to my friend and her neighbors in her senior complex. Some of them had their first summer tomato sandwich, what a treat. Seniors so rarely get fresh, homegrown produce. If anyone has extra, try these facilities. It is so appreciated.

Every video is filled with useful information for any gardener or homesteader. I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see videos with honest, down to earth unstaged content. I also very much appreciate that you only very occasionally mention product links. I've stopped following a few "homesteaders" because of the amount of Amazon links used in the videos. Thank you for always keeping it real and humble. 🦋

Thank you! After watching a number of your videos, I am now making plans to homestead the 15' x 15' deck out back of my townhouse. I'm gonna build one raised bed this winter (2' x 6'?) and in the spring plant at least carrots (Danver half shorts!), beets and kale ... and some flowers. Thanks for the link to the Berlin Seed Co. I grew kale in planters this year, so I know I can to that successfully. We'll see about the carrots and beets! If I can get this done, I'll add another raised bed next year.

Ooh, since you guys have such a good source for large amounts of compost, you might consider a no-dig/no-till bed. It does a beautiful job of increasing drainage and managing wet clay. We are extremely wet in eastern missouri and it really makes a huge difference.

Thanks again for these tips. I’m just now putting in a small fall garden and need to work on more compost. My husband and I build an elevated garden from scrap wood and free cedar drawers. We found swivel canister wheels online that elevate and lower anything you add them to that we want to purchase later. Maybe you can add them to your chicken coup to help with the mobility. Have a beautiful blessed Sunday!

Put down cardboard and then wood chip in the walkways. As it breaks down it will feed your garden. It’s easier to pull up any weeds that do come up.

Hi I’m Joe from Springfield Mo. I’ve been watching your videos! Cool. I see you put your corn stocks for next year mulch. ( But ) you can sell your corn stocks for Halloween or Thanksgiving. We tie them to the front porch poles. 6 stocks for $5.00 depends on how many you have on hand. As for canning. It’s may take time to do everything. But you know what’s in the jar, which taste better then store bought. As for what you both want to do outside per year you want to do. Make a list of projects plus cost. Then take it one step at a time. Depending on how many acres you have, why not look into how to plant grain wheat, rye, barley , sorghum! You can get the very from the brain and make your own flowers. You see your cows and chicken free food for the animals!! When I was small, I helped my uncle back on the farm back in Pennsylvania in the mid 60s until I graduated in the mid 70s. I wish your partner get a piece of paper right you need to do suggestions you might be able to another piece of equipment. Good luck on your invention. Joe!!

Very hard here in the desert to compost as I have to wet the piles pretty often or stuff does not break down - very dry climate. I like your big pile and if we were not on a 100X120' lot I'd have a bigger one (we also don't have a tractor and our tiller is electric and tiny).

I am in Ohio also, I set up my in ground beds and aisles and only spread my compost on the planting beds then I cover them with OLD rotted HAY, round bales, for the winter. In the aisles I try to rake the pine needles from our place, that way I have defined beds/aisles. I also do not sift my compost or broken down manure, but always get this done in the fall. Another thing I did with the asparagus was to burn the whole patch in the spring, it got rid of a lot of the bugs, I hand picked the rest, and weeds in the patch. It worked out GREAT and I will leave my asparagus ferns standing and plan to burn in the spring again. I am a lazy gardener! Took your advice on ordering through Berlin seeds. I have received my first order and waiting on a catalog to complete my second order. Thank you for that video on ordering seeds and suggesting Berlin. They had what I wanted and what I could grow in 8B! Concerning soil samples, I did want to make it know that where I am from (NC) our Cooperative Extension office will send soil samples to NC State University at no cost. The form tells you how to collect, asks what you plan to plant in that area, you drop the boxes and forms (provided by cooperative extension) back off at your local cooperative extension office for them to transport to NCSU. Then NCSU will email you the results and suggestions. Not sure this is an option for all but being no cost it is worth looking into. Thank you guys for your videos!

Why do you guys wait 2 years for the compost? I basically do the same, a lazy composting method because we don't have time to manage it. But I do use the bucket on the tractor probably every other day for the first week or 2 and then maybe once a month to aerate it. I drag the pile out, push it back in and just lift it up and dump it back down. I also spray it down. I've got horse, chicken and goat manure in along with their bedding and kitchen scraps. It's been steamy this past week, so I'm happy about that because I know a hot compost is not easy to achieve sometimes! I will probably use this next fall because I've still got a lot leftover from this past batch.

Compost is something I have NEVER been good at. It always seems like a stinky pile of GARBAGE JUICE.

I know what you mean. That likely means that you need more carbon. Mix in some straw or dead leaves or something like that. Our compost piles have a lot of carbon mixed in because it's deep bedding, not just straight manure.
