  • Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with 'I Love 90s Blues Rock Chords.' As I reveal in the video, there was an explosion of blues rock music shortly following the tragic death of blues rock guitar legend Stevie Ray Vaughan in August of 1990. After his passing, there was a noticeable outpour of blues rock bands/guitarists that hit the scene and this episode sheds some light and shares some music from this interesting time in rock music history - so let's dive in!
The chord-based and rhythm guitar examples in this episode came from players/bands such as Chris Duarte, Eric Gales, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Arc Angels, Cry Of Love, Bloodline, and more! This includes songs such as 'My Way Down,' 'Sign Of The Storm,' 'Born With A Broken Heart,' 'Cell Block 7,' 'Highway Jones,' and 'Good Time,' to name a few.
Needless to say, if you're a blues rock fan, a fan of 90s rock music, or maybe a player searching for some new chord twists and rhythm guitar ideas to explore - this episode is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

That first Chris Duarte riff is killer. Very Stevie Rayish. Love it! 😍 🎸🤘🏼

It's important to note that he didn't write the riff, but I think the My Way Down lyrics are original. Guitar Pilgrim did a lesson on the original version, but I couldn't find via a quick search. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Duarte fan. Azul Ezell is another epic, in the style of Santana..

MY POWERHOUSE HERE! I love this .Lived in Texas from 83-94 and saw SRV a few times. Also after SRV died,I was in Houston around 1991working,I actual lived in Tyler Texas, where Bugs Henderson was from/anyhow,while working in Houston I heard on the radio Chris Duarte was playing a club, opening for the Outlaws. I was blown away ,and became a big Chris Duarte fan,and still am. I now live in Honolulu, about 3 years ago Chris Duarte played a small venue called Hawaiian Brians in Honolulu, just Chris and his GF/Beth Lee on acoustic ,no drummer or bass, just those 2.I was able to meet and chat with Chris and Beth that night! - Great chord play lesson here! Thank you

Another great video David! I genuinely get excited when I see a new video from you pop up in my feed. You come off as a true music lover/guitar player, which is rare on RUclips. Lately every guitar related video I watch feels like an advertisement. Thanks a lot dave, hope to see a lot more in the future!

I started playing guitar in 1988, and I was into metal at the time, but my formative years was after SRV died, and I went strat and blues, so this episode resonates with me

I’m convinced that fhe 90’s Blues Rock era all started because of Gary Moore’s “Still got the blues”. He already had great following, and later on he also scored hits from that album, and so he brought the new Blues Rock stream onto bigger audience. Hearing “Oh, pretty woman” in a bar, blew me away as a teenager, and made me play guitar even more😅

Joe B’s playing has always been exceptional … the solo on Dixie Peach from Bloodline is incredible … regardless of his age … Cry of Love and Brother Cain released great recordings over the years … btw, you nailed the tone for those examples … 😎

Dude, thanks so much for this. These guys were such huge influences on me back then and hearing them again really got me interested in revisiting the riffage. I always thought Audley was sooo talented at those kind of long winded soloing runs that worked so well. Thanks again.

Great video and love the artists featured. I recall some of the hair metal-type bands from the 80s got rid of the costumes, aquanet and “da-duh duh da-duh duh..etc.” chord progressions with zillions of notes solos and seemed to take a more blues rock approach into the 90s as well. Cinderella and Great White come to mind off the top of my head.✌🏻🎸

On "Born with a Broken Heart", I think he's using m7th chords for both the I and IV chords; On the IV chord, play a D7#9 and delete the Major 3rd from it. My ear hears the m7th chords, but maybe I'm wrong. That Em9 is a very jazzy chord, but you make it sound right over the progression. Enjoy all your videos, thanks Dave!

Do a few searches for what you're looking for and see if I've created something you're interested in.

Another interesting fact about Bloodline is that many of the members were sons of other famous musicians ... Berry Oakley, Jr., whose dad was a founding member of the Allman Brothers, Sammy Hagar's son Aaron, Miles Davis' son Davis, and Robby Krieger's son Waylon. Awesome music!

Something that kinda interests me is where those cats all went from there. Ian Moore would be an example of somebody trying to grow his ouvre artistically even if folks pushed back. I feel like a lot of those cats were already well on that path in terms of what they cut their teeth on, and then a tragic event kinda focuses peoples attention on a thing, and you hear people sort of absent mindedly getting into things like GOAT conversations, which are seldom good for art... but I feel like its interesting how a lot of creators are sorta like archeologists in there way. Sifting through all that came before. It seems like terraces of ideas being built in increments of decades.

Old guy here, recent subscriber. I have to say that besides being an outstanding player, your content is really good, and you mimic the players you are covering uncannily well. It may be a question you have already answered, but what rig are you using for these videos? It always seems to closely approximate the original.
