01 Oct 2024: 469 Patches showing wounds from life and fight (explore.org)

- The view is brief and not very clear, but 469 is showing wounds on his leg, head and over his body. This is why serious fights are so rare (first time on the cams), the risk of injury is too great with respect to the reward.
Thank you for keeping your comments kind. Technology has brought the beauty and wonder of nature into our homes, but also reminds us it can also be brutal. Sometimes hard to understand, but always appreciate.
Note, I do not know how much of this is from 402, but the leg face and head look like what 402 did with her huge bright claws and teeth. She ravaged his head and neck during the fight. A photographer in canoe took photos, 469 gave the cache up right away and 32 buried the remains and took possession.

😔 Thank you for this clip.
TY Terry. So unfortunate on every level. We'll never know why; however, I do hope 469 heals soon
Well we all knew how hard she fought but just like with humans males have more upper body strength than a female does and he just overpowered her. I still get so choked up over it😔thanks for sharing this is the first actual footage I’ve seen of this bear since the incident.
Such a bummer. Both bears involved end up losing, while top bear gets a massive gain he didn’t need. It feels so allegorical.
Agree. Patches is old and we have always celebrated his returns. I do not hate him but feel sad for the tragic circumstance.
When you think about this incident from a sort of detached standpoint, it's a pretty severe net loss for 469. He expended an immense amount of energy and has some injuries to deal with at this critical point of the year...and absolutely nothing to show for it.
On the other hand, it's a huge windfall for #32. But...32 worked for this all year. All the effort he expended - and risks he took - in climbing to the top of the Brooks River hierarchy, are now paying off for him in a big way.
And interestingly, this is not the first time this sort of thing has happened here. In 2012, Bear #814 took over a bear carcass cache (from 469, no less) by virtue of his dominant status and thus virtually guaranteed himself successful hibernation.
When we try to look at nature without the baggage of our human emotions and judgment, it's pretty extraordinary how it all works.
I think 402/856's son 503 will be next in line for the belt. 747 hasn't giving up yet either. He put 32 back into place a few times this year.
@@jimsmith7716 if 503 stays healthy, given his "young" age (14) and already formidable size, it's hard to imagine he won't be at the top of the hierarchy very soon.
747 is well over 20 years old and even 32 is 20 now. 20 years is the average lifespan of a Katmai bear, and with old age, decline is inevitable...as we've witnessed this year with the once invincible 856.
@@matthirt7863503 was born 2013, he is pretty young still but huge like his parents 492 and 856.
Wow. He really took some damage. I was unaware.
He is a very old bear as well, not a lot of time left.
469/ An elder statesbear..of katmai! He was id as an adult male in 2001.
Hes still coming back to the falls. That puts 469 at 30 years & over..
Hes a great 🐻...469
Some are no doubt from 402, the rest from 32
I am sure 32 could best him, but it was my impression from rangers that he gave the cache up right away. Watching the fight, 402 ravaged his head and face so I am sure most are hers.
If 32 has claimed 402, there's a big boy out there who will take care of business down the road. 402 and 856s son 503. Both 747 and 32 Chunky have tried to intimidate him away from the falls. 503 just stares back at them and laughs.😆 That tank is still growing too.
I love the time at top of falls, 32 ran up there to rush 503. But standing 503 towers over 32. Poor Chunk gave a half-hearted pose, 503 shrugged "whatever" and continued on. Even 32 is surprised. Another surprise growth spurt is 164 Bucky.
503 definitely the next king of katmai. Im confused though, Ive read of people saying that 856 is possibly 503 father
@louiseoakey yep 856... i had 469 on the mind for some reason.
I sure hope the bear he was in a fight with is okay.
402 was killed and 32 has cached her
I dont remember seeing these wounds on bear 469 after he murdered beautiful bear 402. I could be wrong, though. @kims.7829
@@SFTink they look like old healed wounds..hence the name patches..and yes I was thinking the same.
Good point, he is a rough old bear. But watching the fight 402 ravaged his face and head and she had big bright beautiful claws. Bringing her to shore he did not look bad, but adrenaline after a fight gives good strength. If I am brave I will look at photos again.
@@sundogsNM after reviewing a vid on the day he returned to BF this year he only had the large patch..old wound on his shoulder..no face wounds.
