If you’re a fan of “Freak Out” and “We’re only in it for the Money”, I’d recommend listening to Ruben & the Jets. But only the original vinyl! Other reissues have a very different sounding mix and overdubs done by Frank waaaaaay later. In fact, that’s a pretty interesting story on its own!
"In 1968, Ruben Sano lifted his immense white-gloved hand, made his fingers go "snat!" and instantly Neo-Greaser Rock was born. A single was released from Ruben's boss album (remember "Cruisin' With Ruben & The Jets"?) called "Deseri". It was played on many AM stations (actually rising to #39 on the Top Forty at KIOA in Des Moines, Iowa) until programmers discovered Ruben & The Jets was really The Mothers under a disguise." ~ Frank Zappa, from What Ever Happened To The Mothers Of Invention: Hit parader magazine, #48, April 1970 "Is this the Mothers of Invention under a different name in a last ditch attempt to get their cruddy music on the radio" ~ quote from thought balloon on the cover of the of Ruben And The Jets album.
You said the magic word "ZAPPA", and that was good enough to convince me to become your 99th subscriber. Excellent video on the verve years, and I can't wait for your "we're only in it for the money " video. Still got the cut-outs from my original copy...
Thank you very much! As a matter of fact I just got the We're Only In It For the Money video edited last weekend and it's up now (if you haven't found it yet). Hope you enjoy it. 👊👍✌️🤙
Dude- as your newest subscriber, I gotta say... You Rock! You provide good info, clearly and in depth without being tedious: and never dull. I also dug your K-Tel video. I had several K-Tel records in the late 70's, and it's kind of a rare topic to find online. Keep making vids, I'll keep watchin! 👍
Thank you very much! Hope I'll be a (somewhat at least) valuable contribution to the VC. Working on editing the newest video where I talk about the We're Only In It For the Money album right now.
The best PAL reissue is on cd, 5 cds to be exact on the Crossfire label titled "Highlights from PAL and Original Sound Studio Archives". If you want to hear "Crusin' With Ruben & the Jets" you should pick up the cd "Greasy Love Songs" which is a fantastic-sounding re-mix of that lp with many bonus tracks. Highly recommended!!! Why the Zappa Family Trust re-titled and changed the cover is beyond me. BTW, Zappa hated the Verve-produced "greatest hits" LPs. I don't recall "Absolutely Free" considered incomplete, but "Freak Out" was. Zappa stated in numerous interviews that the Monster Magnet - side 4 was only the backing tracks.
Ruben and the Jets is great and a little underrated imo. Especially if you have soft spot for doo wop-some pretty beautiful moments and subtle time signature stuff keeps it fresher than a straight up doo-wop tribute.
Thanks you saved me a comment Ruben and the jests is a amazing album and tribute to music frank had a soft spot for can bring a tear to my eye that album for sure overlooked by a lot of so called Zappa heads
@@BagMan123 If you never heard of it check out The Persuasion's album Frankly A Capella-they are great doo wop group Zappa signed to straight/bizarre records in 1970 and it is a tribute to Zappa. They also did Gratefful Dead tribute album that I like even more, but yeah they made bunch of great albums through 70's and 80'[s in distinct east coast old school and acapella doo wop style. And I have also shed a tear like in a cartoon drinking 40s with Ruben and Jets lol
I can’t believe a true FZ doesn’t have or hasn’t listened to Cruisin With Ruben & the Jets, very cool album. I have my copy, a bit mauled up by my cats but I got it & enjoy it.
I know. 🤣🤣🤣 (Hiding my face in shame). That's one I don't think I have ever found on vinyl. Or if I ever did, it was best up all to hell. I've tried to listen to the CD release, but I think it's the digital remix Frank did in the 80's. There's a vinyl rip on RUclips somewhere. I'll play it later today when I get off work.
@@pinchebolillosrecordranch Greasy Love Songs is the original vinyl mix of Ruben with a few bonus tracks. Check that one out. I don't like the 80s remixes of Ruben and Money, as well as most of the albums Frank reworked when he got the masters back.
I had a strange 12" single 30+ years ago with dear creepers or whatever it was, with both sides of the single and had a newspaper blurb on the back with a pic of young zappa in low res newsprint... it may have even been the news story of how he had been busted for "porn" aka "party records"... it didn't take me long to trade that one off for a better copy of Bongo Fury... one of my Favs! Say what you want about WB... he had a great streak of records and they kind of kept him in check with his more self indulgent stuff... and most of his most inspired and accessible stuff came out then... I really wish he would have kept better care of his mgm masters and early stuff, since there were alternate masters for AF and WOIIFTM that didn't have the censored bits... but ah well...
Oh yeah, he shines like mad at Reprise/WB. Frank said in an interview in the very early 80's that when he finally got the masters for his Verve stuff, he took I presume Freak Out and held it to a light source and he could see right through the tape. They didn't store them for crap.
@Pinche Bolillo's Record Ranch bear in mind he missed the huge fire at the MGM GRAND HOTEL in which about 60% I think, of their film and tape stock was destroyed. No doubt his would have been in it.
They were probably safe with the mothers of invention because as everyone knows necessity is the mother of invention. Oh well Doctor zhivago was a great movie. Klaus kinski was awesome in it. And without it we wouldn't have Natasha. Im 66 and I have never heard of four track tapes. My mothers cousin was married to the founder of Kraco tape decks. He had a sideline called bootleg tapes which produced 8 track tapes. This was in 1969 when I was 13. I presume that the company lived up to its name. The logo was a womans leg in a boot.
Never hear of 4 track tapes either until I read about them a while back. I had a quad receiver with a built-in 8-track player. Of course I had to have Richard Pryor and Carlin on 8-tracks. 🤣✌️🤙🤘
@@pinchebolillosrecordranch Im not sure but I think I remember when the cassette tapes first came out. My mothers cousins husband who I mentioned in my comment gave my parents a new kraco cassette tape deck when we went to visit them in 1969. They lived right behind universal studios so we could watch TV shows being filmed. I think the cassette decks had just came out. We were from Tacoma Washington so it was a big deal for us.
Forgot to mention, I completely agree...Doctor Zhivago is a badass movie! I first saw it when I was 13 years old and immediately bought the soundtrack on Lp. Still have it. That's one of the few films that taught me the power of cinematography. 😎
@Pinche Bolillo's Record Ranch I have a pioneer/craig 4 track player in my van. They're actually awesome. I fix and restore old gear like that... and 4 track is the same basic format as reel to reel... so I make reel tapes on mastering tape from my old recording studio on an ampex mastering deck, then load it into a 4 track shell. The pioneer is hooked to a 200 watt linear booster and fed to the speaker system in the van, and some subs hidden under the seats. People get in... and they say "oh my God, is that an 8-track!" And I shrug.... "I dunno... it was in there when I bought it... I think there's a few tapes in the dash..." they pull one out... plug it in... and whaaaaaa... pure analog washes over the van... 20-20k.... perfect tone... they're blown away... then I hit the eject. "Yea... sounds like shit" throw the tape in the back... shocked and dazed expression.... lolol
I just watched a video from Zappas British secretary. She described his music as clinical. That's how I feel about it. Zappa couldn't write a song from the heart if he had a gun to his head. He was a political satirist who mocked all of life. He should of been a scientist. He might of invented something to improve life.

A question. Did Frank write sort of sexually explicit lyrics from the start or did he start writing like these in revenge for his arrest. I always thought he was a little obsessed with that.
