Mind blown!!! Your tip at the end of the video, about new disposals having a plug that has to be knocked out, life changing. I must have missed that in the directions, or not looked at them at all. Mine was still plugged since installation MORE THAN 5 YEARS AGO!!! I seriously thought it was supposed to drain into the sink because it did it since installation. I usually do dishes by hand but SMH, please dont take away my man-card... lmao. THANK YOU!!!
I am helping out a client that had her house rented and apparently the renters replaced the garbage disposal but didn't remove the plug. Saved her so much money trying the steps in this video and in the end the plug was still intact. Thanks to you both because this comment was pinned and what you wrote stuck in my head.
@@jram8984 Hey bud I followed your example and was able to remove the factory clamp with the cable cord; however, water still comes out of the air gap though not as much as before. There are no visible kinks in the wires. What do you suspect is causing water to yet emerge from the air gap when draining usage from the dish washer. Thanks again bud.
My apartment maintenance guy said that it was normal to have water shooting out of my air gap. I have to watch it while the dishwasher is running to stop it from going all over the counter. I am so sick of having to clean it up and not being able to have anything on my counter. This solved the entire issue. THANK YOU!
Thank you , my husband work 16 hours a day and don’t have time to fix it.. I fixed it by following your instructions, thank you so much. I’m so happy so I subscribed because you helped me.
Thanks for the excellent video. Only half the water flowing out of the air gap cover was going into the sink, and the rest was flooding the counter and dripping onto the floor. I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I was going to work around the problem by rigging a channel to force all the excess water to flow into the sink. Your video showed me the actual problem is quite simple and easy to fix!
Thanks for the superb video, which allowed me to fix this issue. What was essential in your video that wasn't shown in the first that I saw was pushing the cable down until it could be seen in the garbage disposal (timeline 2:56 in your video). I saw another video where this wasn't shown, and I didn't push the cable all the way through and still had a clog. After seeing your video, I did this, and indeed, the clog was cleaned, and there was no more leak. This is a super important part of the process others haven't told viewers about, but you did so. Kudo's on a fine video!
Thank you! Fixed the "water flooding the kitchen counter" problem by following your advice right down to the use of the coaxial cable which I had on hand. First time was an improvement but still had water coming out; did it again, ran the disposal and no more water coming out of the air gap.
Thank you! Mine was so clogged (in a rental) that the cable was so restricted it wouldn’t go thru to the garbage disposal. I poured hot water into the air gap and put my hand in the garbage disposal to make sure it got some water flow. That cleared it enough to get the cable on thru. After that I put vinegar and baking soda in the garbage disposal and ran it. Then I put both in the air gap to really clean it out. 😊
I can't thank you enough! Best Buy installed a brand new dishwasher and the guys said the air gap needs to be replaced because when they tested the dishwasher, water comes out of the air gap when it's draining. So after they left I followed your video and lo and behold, ITS FIXED. I used a bicycle brake cable housing to clear the clog. Thank you!!!
Thanks man, replaced our dishwasher after a year, and I figured the air gap was broken when it started spraying water out. Turns out I had a solid plug of gunk in the drain tub of the garbage disposal. Wire wasn't enough, so I pulled off the hose and pushed it out with a screwdriver. You saved the day, my friend.
Hey thank you so much! I was losing my mind because I had it different from a different garbage disposal. Once I put the new garbage disposal in I did not know about the plug and drain because I was not using it for that, I was only using tie off from sink #2, it for a soap dispenser. Once I had to install the air vent and be in compliance with code requirements, I could not figure out why the water was shooting out the air vent. I tried everything and luckily stumbled upon your video and realized the new garbage disposal still had that plug which was never knocked out! So thank you so much you really made my day, I can’t really tell you how happy I am to have found this! Amazing!
I wish I'd found this video before replacing my dishwasher thinking it's getting too old. The new one still had the overflow issue. I couldn't figure out why pulling my hair out. The cable trick is genius! Thank you.
First video I found that explained it perfectly and entirely. I had no idea what that vent was for and it started leaking a while ago. Now I can stop it! Thank you!!
Ditto to what everyone else has said here already. I followed the instructions in the video and for the first time in a long while my air gap spout is not shooting water all over the place. I feel so empowered! Thank you!
Brother, I know I'm late to the party, but I can't thank you enough for your genius!! I had only used my dishwasher once when I first moved into my place.....then had to replace the garbage disposal...didn't pay attention that they were connected....and of course, didn't read the instructions on my new garbage disposal (a guy thing) to remove the tab. Just turned my dishwasher on (cuz my brother was making fun of me), and because I didn't remove that tab, water was shooting STRONG out of the air gap....thank GOD I was still home, or my kitchen would be soaked. So, thank you for a perfectly detailed video!! You are more appreciated than you may know! Saved me from giving myself another headache! Took all of 5-minutes to fix the problem. Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing your expertise! Fixed it in 5 minutes! Plumbers in my area charge $125 just for showing up ! You saved me a bundle! You are awesome!
Great idea on the coaxle cable. I have always disconnected mine from under the sink and cleaned it that way, much harder and more painful than going in top side. Thanks!
Thank you so much!!! It was your tip about the new garbage disposal plug that needs to be removed that changed how I felt about my new apartment. Now, thanks to you no more nasty smell from the old black water sitting in that area with no place to go and no more towel needed to soak up the water leaking from the air gap! Thank you so very much, you are wonderful!!!!
Thanks for the video. I stuck wire down that hole and saw goop come out hole inside garbage disposal then ran the dishwasher and cancelled the cycle and watched the water come out hole in garbage disposal. I love you tube! Saved me from taking apart the drain pipes. 👍
You are the only one who has mentioned the "tab" that does not allow for water flow into the disposal unit from the air gap "Y" under the sink. Thank you as I was racking my brain as to why I suddenly had a flow issue when the original problem was a leaking disposal unit. Thank you very much.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Watched multiple videos and tried things with no luck. You were the first video to mention plastic insert. Solved it right away!!!
Sam, I sincerely thank you for this excellent How-To video! I happened to have some spare coax cable in the garage to use. The problem was fixed in 10-minutes, I saved money, and learned a few things too! Thank You!
Awesome video! We’re new home owners and we thought we had a serious issue on our hands. For anyone struggling, make sure you’re going around the smaller tube inside the air gap opening, not inside. Loved the tv cable tip too! I couldn’t find one so I used wire cutters to clip the plug off an old monitor cord. Worked like a charm.
This was one great tip! I never knew that I could remove the top off of the air gap. I used a piece of 1/4-inch irrigation tubing. I was ready to remove the black hose from under the sink. This was a time-saver. Thank you.
Saved me a bundle of time and money. I was planning to try to take the whole thing apart and clean it out, instead your 5-minute fix did the job! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Thank u so much! This worked perfectly for mine. Now it's draining correctly and so smart to run the cable through. I had a clog and followed your instructions and unclogged it in seconds and no more water draining all over my counters😊
Thank you a million times over!!! For the first time ever I installed a new garbage disposal and all of a sudden my dish washer was spitting the water out or the top. I had NO IDEA they put a plug in the garbage disposal... This saved me a service call. Thank you again!!!!
What an awesome video! No nonsense and to the point! I just fixed mine. There was a LOT of build-up and resistance, so I used a long-handled brush on the inside of the sink, then kept feeding the cable through. It worked!! Thank you!!
U r a my hero!!! Thank u. I’ve had this problem for awhile. Just left it alone till my sister said her air gap was shooting water. Told her leave it. She said I was crazy so I went on you tube and found u. IT WORKED!!! The cable did the trick. I had to go through the sink hole up through the air gap cuz it was clogged the other way. Thank u again. 🤗🤗🤗
We just could not figure out how so much water could be on the countertops, and inside the cupboard under the sink. Thank you for the explanation and the fix it advice.
I can’t find an air gap cleaning brush that’s long enough for my dishwasher’s tube, so cut an extra cable to use like the film. It worked! It’s free and always feel good to be able to repurpose things on hand. Thank you very much Sam.
Thank you! I just put a new dishwasher in and had this issue. The hose was not kinked and it is hung 33” from the floor but still had issue. Sure enough my old air vent was clogged with mildew as was the return to garbage disposal hose. Finally all done installing the dishwasher thanks to this video!
Thank you very much for the idea. My dishwasher was gashing water over the air gap for quite some times. Right after this video, I was able to discharge the garbage that was clogging the water to flow. That was great and thank you!!
Thank you for this! Saved me a lot of time trying to figure out what was happening. Never had the problem with previous washers so I had no clue what an air gap was.
There was not a lot of gunk when I shoved the cable down, but it must have been enough to cause the water to flow out the top. Now, the water drains into the garbage disposal, as it should. Thank you for your clear explanation!
Thank you for this video. Real time and money saver. I was happy to used something I already owned to fix it without buying a new air gap or anything else. This is really helpful!
Thank you sir. You help me a lot. I was thinking to hire someone else to repair my air cap but i saw your video. It was very easy to fix it. Your last two comments was the clue to solve my problem. Thank again from el paso texas
I’m a pretty handy person. I was getting ready to take my entire drain system apart to find a clog, but I figured I’d check the old RUclips’s to see if there are any tips. I never would’ve thought of just shoving a piece of wire down the air gap. I’m an electrician so I grabbed some romex I have sitting in the garage and had it fixed in less than five minutes. genius. we just had a new garbage disposal put in this morning and when i ran our dishwasher we had a significant flood. thought i would google and saw your video. texted the plumber "did you remove the drain plug"? He did not! Thank you!
I see you posted this a year ago, I mentioned that so you'd know, over a year later, some random person (me) needed to hear what you said at minute 3:59. It's sad to admit but it's the truth. Nevertheless, because I recognized my error via your video, I've removed the plug and everything is working as it should. Your video is still helping random folks. Thanks.
Thank you! I ended up just pulling the hose out and running the garden hose through it. Got some pretty gnarly gunk out of it. Liked and Subbed! You're the man!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! had this issue for months and just 5 minutes of watching this video, my DW now works perfectly and no overflow from air gap. THANK YOU!
Thank you so much, especially for the comment at the end regarding the black insert inside the disposal. We had a new disposal installed right before we used the dishwasher and the black insert was NOT removed. Guess that's what you get when you don't have a professional install you appliances!!!!!
I had a "FlexiSnake Drain Millipede". That itself is too short, but with its end inserted into a 1/4 in drip irrigation tubing that I had lying around, made it the ideal tool for cleaning my airgap. The millipede fitted easily and its rough surface effectively cleaned the tube. There was a lot of gunk that came out with the millipede.
You're awesome. I was able to fix mine with the help of your video. The tube was so clogged that the cable wire wouldn't clear it through the air gap. I had to take the tube out and water hose it through the tube and a ton of gunk came out.
We have a new garbage disposal and I tried your cable snake method and it doesn't pop out of the garbage disposal. I'm glad you mentioned that there is some sort of cap on the inside of new Disposals. As soon as my dishwasher cycle ends I'm gonna try to punch it out.
🙏🙏🙏 thank you! I watched so many other videos that didn’t work but your instructions were so clear! Also, genius about the cable. We all know how many random cables we have lying around the house from the ghosts of electronics past. Thank you!!!
Thank you!! I just used this video yesterday and it worked like a charm! I had a small flexible drain brush that pulled a lot of debris out of the tube - fixing the problem!
Thank you so much for this video! Saved us from having to call a plumber. We are NOT handy at all, but your instructions were so clear. Could not believe the gunk that came out of that line. Thanks again.
Thank you I did this and worked perfect. Also thanks for the tips at the end. It appears I do have a kink in the black tube connecting the disposal and air gap.
Good video. I always remove the air gap and black hose under the sink and clean them both out. But this is a good alternative for home owners. Heck, I might even try this method!
thank you sooooo much my hired plumber didn't think to check the air gap, I cleaned it with a dryer lint brush, took black tube off of the garbage disposal pulled the brush through it recapped turned on the dishwasher and drain it. NO WATER OUT OF THE AIR GAP!
Thank you so much for the tip! I got a bunch of cables around not using, and I just cut one and used it to try unclogging the air gap. It's awesome that it worked :D
My dishwasher has been set up since before I owned the house, and I never realized that the plug hadn’t been fully removed until I installed an air gap and water was coming out of it. Then I saw that the plug was like a flap, detached on one side by pressure but still covering the hole. Thanks!!!
Great video! In my case I replaced the air gap and removed and cleaned the black hose and still had water coming out the vent. Turns out there was still junk clogging the small pipe on the garbage disposal where the drain connects, cleaned that and everything works now.
That’s that helped! I was already going to replace the whole dishwasher or the lines. This cleared it up. I actually used those plastic dryer vent cleaning rods that you screw onto each other and just pushed all the clogged debris. I did remove the hose that feeds onto the garbage disposal and made sure to clean that all up. Placed a large bowl under it and bam. Works like new.
Thanks for the great video! I had to take the extra step and take off the pipe to the air gap and rinse it out (Seriously! Bleghh!) but your video helped me know what I was looking at. I appreciate it!
Thank you. Although the cable couldn't get past the bend in the line ( I think the line could be shortened to reduce the bend) I was able to simply detach it from the dishwasher and get into it that way. Just as easy - only add a hose clamp removal to the process.
Mind blown!!! Your tip at the end of the video, about new disposals having a plug that has to be knocked out, life changing. I must have missed that in the directions, or not looked at them at all. This was the best, economical video to clear the air gap, that I have ever seen. To the point, no superfluous talking. Thank you!!!
I installed a new garbage disposal and didn’t know about the plug. $40 dollars later this video was the answer lol. Thanks brother
Spent over an hour watching videos. Knocking out the plug trick helped. Thank you so much.
Add another satisfied customer to the list. I’d just replaced my sink, and could not figure out why this was leaking. You fixed it.

Well done- simple, easy to understand. No unnecessary "know it all" attitude which is often the case with these.

Might just be the best fix-it video ever. Thanks!
Thank you for describing it visually and verbally so well. Problem solved. Hate to imagine going under the sink to fix this.
Sam, thank you my friend. I followed your guide and cleared out the air gap. You rock buddy!!!

Pleased to say that this is exactly the fix I needed. Now, I keep the scrap piece of cable I used under the sink for the next time!
My airgaff plastic got moldy and broken can I change just the plastic parts
This helped immensely! Took 5 minutes to fix with a coat hanger. Thanks!

I knew there was a reason I never disconnected the previous owners Satellite Dish. Cable worked like a charm, thank you! Money saver!!!
Bro, i was really skeptical but this approach worked!!! You rock. Saved the day. Thank you! Now i need to call comcast to get another cable...
Thank u again. 🤗🤗🤗
Thanks for the great video regarding a clogged air gap. We fixed it ourselves and saved a plumber visit!!!
Thanks dude came in clutch! Cut an extra hdmi cord I had laying around and worked perfectly !
Thank you for the "if you have a new disposal" addition, because I thought I had tried everything to fix this, and voila! Super helpful.
After replacing multiple airgaps & lines, this saved needed money & time. Thank you!
I tried it today and it worked. The method is simple and very little required. Thank you so much for saving me quite some money and time.
Thanks, Bud! I saved $270. Took me 20 minutes.
This guy is a pro! Excellent camera work, I can see exactly what he is describing. Thank you!

EP!!
Just bought my first home and thought I was going to need a plumber right off the bat. Really appreciate this video!
Saved me a lot of money. New homeowner and the garbage disposal was new and it had that blocker cap on. Thank you
I’m a pretty handy person. I was getting ready to take my entire drain system apart to find a clog, but I figured I’d check the old RUclips’s to see if there are any tips. Nevertheless, because I recognized my error via your video, I've removed the plug and everything is working as it should. Your video is still helping random folks. Thanks.
Same here, I just installed a new garbage disposal at my house and stupidly left the plug installed. Huge help, 2 minute fix. Major thanks!
THANK YOU!
It took me a while to get the cable through, probably because I never cleaned before. But it worked!!! Like a charm! Thank you so much!!!
Best video of the several ones I have watched on the subjet matter, and the tv cable trick is pure genius! Thanks!
Dude, like everyone else on here: THANK YOU! First video I watched on my research before contacting a plumber and problem solved!

Thank you!! This is the simplest way to clear out that vent. So grateful!!
Thank you for this, it fixed the problem right away once I saw the part about the little insert in the new garbage disposal.
Saved me a plumber service call! Worked like a charm - thank you
Thank you Sam our sink was constipated and your video helped us a lot
Thank you!! I just used this video yesterday and it worked like a charm! I had a small flexible drain brush that pulled a lot of debris out of the tube - fixing the problem!
I just now used an old cable and it worked perfectly! Thank you so much for this video!
So helpful. Great hack. Saved money! 👍
Two thumbs up! That is really genius, working like a dream. My wife usually cut shrimp feet off and they clogged the tube. Thank you!
Thank you so much for posting this! This fixed the dishwasher overflow problem I had today. You just made my day.
Worked great, right away. it only took a 1 pass with the cable line and the clog was cleared. Thank you!!!!!!
Coming back to say this video worked like a charm. Really liked the Coax Cable trick since I had some extra laying around. Thanks!
It worked with a cable wire all the through the disposal. I was told to buy the air gap. Thank you!!😀
thank you sooooo much my hired plumber didn't think to check the air gap, I cleaned it with a dryer lint brush, took black tube off of the garbage disposal pulled the brush through it recapped turned on the dishwasher and drain it. NO WATER OUT OF THE AIR GAP!
Thanks! I installed everything and had this issue, found a bend in the pipe, thanks for guiding me the right way!
Thank you so much. My air gap was shooting out water all over the counter. This is a great easy way for me to fix this problem.
Thank you. I was wondering why mine was shooting water from the air gap. Cleaned it out and tomorrow morning I’m making a thorough cleaning.
Thank you so much for the tip! I got a bunch of cables around not using, and I just cut one and used it to try unclogging the air gap. It's awesome that it worked :D
Glad it worked 😀
I appreciate it!
this is the best video i have seen about fixing this issue
Thank you. Although the cable couldn't get past the bend in the line ( I think the line could be shortened to reduce the bend) I was able to simply detach it from the dishwasher and get into it that way. Just as easy - only add a hose clamp removal to the process.
MAJOR HELP!!!
New Disposal omg thank u for continuing the video tp get to rhe new disposal part!!!
