  • Eritrea won independence from Ethiopia in 1993 after a 30-year war. Eritrea is home to diverse ethnic groups, including Tigrinya, Tigre, Saho, Afar, Kunama, Bilen, Beja, and Nara. Tigrinya and Arabic are recognized national languages, while English is one of the working languages. The northeastern and eastern parts of Eritrea have an extensive coastline along the Red Sea. It is bordered by Ethiopia to the south, Sudan to the west, and Djibouti to the southeast
