The WORST WIPEOUT of Ulisses Pereira's Life at NAZARE.

  • Ulisses Vinicious Pereira was only 18 years old when he not only surfed the biggest wave of his life but also experienced what was undoubtedly the worst wipeout of his life.
Everything was going well. Ulisses was riding a massive wave at Peak 1 of Praia do Norte, with epic conditions: a solid swell and a slight offshore wind giving the waves a perfect shape. As surfers say, the sea was glassy.
Ian Cosenza was piloting the jet ski and placed Ulisses in the perfect spot to start riding the wave of his life. But something went wrong on the drop. At what, from my perspective, was the worst place to fall, Ulisses fell, and the nightmare began.
The first wave hit him on the head, dragging him towards the inside, where another massive wave didn’t spare him, forcing him to put his apnea skills to the test. After that second wave underwater, he was rescued. However, with the little energy left after being pounded by two mountains of water over 50 feet tall, he couldn't hold onto the sled of the jet ski and let go just as he was about to be taken out of the impact zone. He received another wave on his head, which, as seen in the video, threw him over the falls, leaving him closer to the cliffs and Praia do Norte. Both Ian Cosenza and Eric Rebiere didn’t rest, doing everything possible to get the poor guy out of there. Finally, Eric, a great pilot in Nazare, managed to reach him and take him to a safe zone.
Those were undoubtedly moments of great tension both in the water for the main characters and for the spectators on the cliff and at the Nazare lighthouse. These are moments when the air gets thicker, and you don’t know what might happen in there. Imagine if the video generates tension, what it must be like to be there live, seeing absolutely everything happening around. You can see the tension in the main characters and those witnessing the rescue, see all the waves approaching the situation but not appearing in the camera frame, and measure the distances to the cliff....
But as the famous saying goes: "What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger." And if you check Ulisses' social media, you’ll see he continues to be a great surfer, riding massive waves and getting deep barrels, probably with a bit more confidence or calm than that day when he had the worst wipeout of his life at Praia do Norte, Nazare.

If I get caught inside by a double overhead wave, I see my life flash before my eyes. I can’t comprehend what goes through their heads in 50 foot waves.

I've got a rule that I created long ago. There's something scary, it goes into the next level, when you cross above 10 feet. So that's why a double overhead wave at 12 ft, is so scary. There is another threshold at 20 ft and I call that "next level". Waves that are 50 or 60 ft, obviously that's something I can't really fathom. (Never witnessed that myself.)

If I get worked or go over the falls at my local my heart is racing, i can’t imagine how scary this must be, these guys are not only brave because they are out there, they are brave because this has happened to them before and they still go out again, if I survived something like this once I would never go back out, no chance.

I have been surfing for over 35 years in So Cal and if you cannot paddle into a 25 foot wave and surf it, then you should not be surfing Nazare. Just because you can get whipped into a wave doesn't mean you are ready for it. He is lucky he did not drown.
