For those wondering, people will sometimes lay a wire framed rug underneath the pea gravel in a flowerbed before filling it with soil. It can act as a weed barrier for your flowers. Could be what was done here.
And that confuses the hell out of me because using some landscaping fabric is cheaper, easier and more logical than wasting a perfectly serviceable rug.

I quite literally don't believe the premise of this video at all. I do soil science at a Russel group university, that rug would have rotted apart and become mouldy shreds of fibre after about 2 weeks under soil.

If it's made from synthetic materials, it could remain intact for years. Even wool takes at least 4 months in ideal conditions.

The fact that the rug that was found in the flower bed, had a flower pattern on it, is weirdly fitting to me. I suspect it was put there by a family member, as a surprise for there hard work on the flower bed, bc it just makes 2 much sense.
