Sure, but if you take a scene of Dean at the beginning of their relationship or when he dresses in a tux and tails for her, versus a scene of Jess when he's yelling at her about prom, you'll get the opposite result

    • @beccasalt8960
      @beccasalt8960 3 месяца назад +370

Jess had his faults and blowouts at the worst possible moments but he actually grew into a better person. Dean's personality took a different trajectory and it was consistently that way, even after the break up with Rory and then the affair with her. Some people just take a while to show you who they really are. Sadly, that's how a lot of domestic abuse flies under the radar. The facade, the bright and caring beginnings, and then the flip side.

    • @aliciavelarde6200

@beccasalt8960 yes, Jess eventually matured into a good person but he was abusive toward Rory when they were dating. Both Jess and Dean had their own issues they had to deal with. But when they were dating Roru, Dean was generally better toward her. I'm obviously not including the affair after he married Lindsay. But in the end, as can be seen in the revival, both Dean and Jess turned out ok. Dean just wasn't the one for Rory.

They screwed Deans character just so they could have Rory with Jess. I prefer Jess or Logan over Dean any day but Deans character changes were not organic. He loved supporting Rory’s ambitions and her passion for reading. They should’ve gone another route than just the angry and jealous boyfriend.

It is actually very organic. Anyone who has been in a relationship with a secret misogynist who is secretly jealous of his smarter girlfriend have seen the exact same thing. I personally experienced it. We saw how he treated his wife.
Added bonus is that he was a teenager and struggled without any support with these ideas, not a full grown adult.

well then, if you have such a strong opinion, what route would you have suggested they go? because i think the route they went was perfect. if they went another route people wouldn’t have liked it and would have criticized it (like you are now) and then say “oh they should’ve made dean a jealous bf instead of _______ (what they did)” so no matter what they do, people will criticize it and recommend something else.

@@Thetrilingualreader totally agree. I had a similar situation when I started dating my first serious boyfriend.
He would always say how much he loved how quiet and bookish I was, but 5 years later I realised that he had basically pulled me away from all my friends and family, and I could never even talk about men I worked with without him sulking or punching the walls at home…
And he used to buy me books when we first started dating, but by year 2 he would start making a fuss about being quiet or not paying him enough attention, so I barely read at all by the end.
He slowly made me make him my entire world and I didn’t even realise until he left me without any warning, and I started to reflect on our life together.
I think sometimes men like the idea of a quiet bookish girl because they think they can manipulate them and keep them to themselves easier than a girl that’s a bit more outgoing. Sad really!

They were just kids! Jess was troubled, Dean was codependent, and Rory was figuring things out. But they grew up-Jess became an author and started Truncheon Books, and Dean settled into family life. Rory, though? She still seemed lost by the end. Jess was obviously no saint but you make it sound like Dean was “good” the majority of the time and Jess and Rory were fighting anymore than Rory and Dean which is just not true, if anything it all averages out. Both characters were flawed so yeah the video puts Jess in a better light, but when it came to Rory’s interests, this is how they communicated in regard to those interests.

Season 1 towards the middle rory brought dean to dinner with her grandparents one sentence i remember is “ im not stopping rory from going to harvard , shes smart and she deserves to go there” and some more sentances i cant rememember moral of the story is that dean wanted rory to go to harvard he was actually pretty supportive too. No, there were no new writers until the last season. Amy Sherman palidino and her husband were the main writers until season 7. The dean and Jess stuff was all done by then. They changed dean’s character to make him less likable as the seasons went on so that the audience would be ok with her being separated from him. The last part is my theory but new writers are not who made dean unlikable that was the original writers. I’m about 99% sure dean wasn’t in the last season, in fact I think his last episode was in season five when Luke and dean have to pick up a cannon ball together and they get into it.

  • @lindapark7338

For people who didn't know this, at the end of the revival, a year in the life, Dean and Rory met again. In Rory's own words after seeing how good, settled and happy he looked, she finally confessed to him " you were the greatest boyfriend alive, generous, protective, kind and strong. That as much as I wish we'd met when I was older and more mature, if I hadn't had you with me then, I wouldn't be the person that I am today. That you taught me what safe feels like." Now, it's safe to say that people don't generally say these kind of things about someone who wasn't good to them right? Like the video tried to make it seem. Even till the moment when she was with Jess and the reason why she even went back to Dean were because of these qualities, she never truly understood what they meant back then or how important they were in a relationship until she became mature. Lorelai knew and that was why out of all the boyfriends she ever had, none came close to gaining her approval like Dean. Jess never understood or tolerated their antics or family dynamic, even stormed out of the dinner at her grandparents house even though he was never shamed or harrass like Dean was when he went there. It was Rory who even got upset and walked out while Dean apologised, upset but calmly went after her. The reason why she left Dean was simple, he had loved her more than she did him and she wanted to not be idolised like everyone else around her, anyone can see that, which was also the same reason why he broke up with her for the final time. He had a wake up call and realised that he deserved love and Rory was not going to be the one to give him that. He could never truly measure up to the golden girl in everyone's eyes, whose feet was not allowed to even touch the ground. And if he has to make something of himself, follow his own path, they can't be together because if they are, he'll only be trying to live up to her expectations and her family's standards. Like she said earlier, if they had met later on when she was more mature, she would've cherished and respected the relationship more.
Honestly, I am happy for Dean and how his life turned out. He finally got that home and family that he had always wanted without being judged for wanting it, with Rory his life was just a bad case of horrible decisions, later on we could clearly see that he sought growth, unfortunately he didn't see it with her.
This is my take on their relationship☺️

I believe this reel knit picked the “good scenes” of Jess. Jess was the one who didn’t care about her dreams but just wanted to be with her. He was too troubled and angry with life for his own reasons. If he cared soo much about Yale why did he show up at Yale’s dorm room and asked Rory to run away with him and leave everything behind her?
He did talk to her and asked her to go back to Yale. But it wasn’t just him that made her go back there were other reasons. Rory is also very entitled, the moment her community hours got over and her will to work for DAR she immediately left her grandparents’ house even without saying a basic courtesy thank you.
Dean character got ruined as Rory made him feel like dirt. He was also a child there and didn’t want to let go of her that easily. She kissed Tristan and never told Dean. She kissed Jess and still decided to be with Dean because Jess was not available at that time.
All of these characters are extremely grey characters it’s almost impossible to choose in between these characters. But a person like Jess who was only nice to Rory not even to Lorelai or Luke who helped him out a lot speaks more about how much he cared for her. He just wanted her to be his girlfriend, however Rory is a person who deeply cares for her mother and Luke and Grandparents etc and they never got the treatment Dean or Logan gave.
Just reading the same books doesn’t mean you can talk forever to each other. Jess was also the one who forced her to have sex when she was not ready and immediately got mad at her when she didn’t want to.
Jess at every opportunity given managed to hurt Rory and even her mother. He left Rory after making sure “she is okay” out of guilt or whatever but he should’ve been there and taken accountability. Rory should have also been yelled at by Lorelai.

    • @TheStepmonkey

Initially Dean's character was supposed to be more like Rory's, but they started to go in a different direction because they wanted there to be a contrast between the two in terms of interests and hobbies. In the first few episodes Dean also has an interest in readingthe same books as Rory does, but by the time of their renewed relationship he seems to have lost all interest in the same things she likes. That's not to say he wasn't supportive of everything she did, because he was, but he was also afraid of losing her like he already had done once before. That's why he became clingy and jealous, and then rightly paranoid because he recognised Jess trying to cause problems just because he thought it was fun, and because he liked the challenge of getting Rory to like him; something which Jess echoes later when she asks him to go to the winter carnival with her and he tells her that now they're together he no longer has to pretend to want to go to these things with her. Jess has no interest in getting to know her family, something Dean did despite knowing how ruthless they could be; remaining polite to Emily even after Richard ripped him apart and later standing up to Richard in regard to his feelings for Rory. Jess has no interest in getting to know Rory's friends, in particular whenever Lane is around Jess is sarcastic, stand-offish and rude even though Lane is doing her best to look passed her previous issues with him.
They're all emotionally imature, they're teenagers, but Dean and Rory were able to communicate much better because Jess was so emotionally traumatised by his upbringing. I understand and can empathise with Jess's plight (hurt people hurt people), however this is no reason to treat others poorly, especially people who've shown nothing but patience, understanding and a genuine willingness to help him. He continues to skip school, he continues to lie to everyone, he continues to cause problems for others. He doesn't change until after Rory is already in a relationship with Logan. And lets not forget the scene in Kyle's bedroom where he tries to pressure Rory into sex and then gets mad at her when she says she doesn't want to. You can put that down to all the other inner turmoil that's been building in him for a long time that finally explodes, BUT he also decides that's what he wants to do instead of talk to her about what's going on with him, and blows up when she just wants to talk. Yeah, Dean punches him because he thinks (and in this case is right on the money) that something inappropriate happened upstairs with Rory. Rory might be crying for a different reason but what Dean suspects happened was on the right wavelength. The fist fight between Dean and Jess was always coming, the way it was written in was down to happenstance; Dean just happened to be on the stairs when Rory came down crying, they could have written in that she bumped into anyone else or no one at all, but we all knew it would happen and I think a lot of people were waiting for it to happen, even wanted it to happen.
Rory says it multiple times that Dean always made her feel safe, secure and loved, whereas she says Jess is unpredictible and leaves her confused and insecure in their relationship. In the beginning it's the mystery and intrigue of him being unpredictable that drew Rory to Jess in the first place. I think Lorelai really hit the nail on the head when she said "I think Rory's 17, it's probably about time for a Jess."
Dean was slowly being written out because Jared's new role as a main character of Supernatural was requiring more of his time, which is why we slowly start to see less and less of Dean, until we barely see him at all. Jess was supposedly written in because Chad Michael Murray was leaving to pursue other roles like One Tree Hill and Dawson's Creek, so Rory could have ended up with Tristan and I know a lot of people wanted to see that happen too.

Those writers are the experts of destroying characters whom they had created. They introduced Dean as a tall , handsome, sweet and kind boy and then they made Dean kept yelling out Rory in front of the other people and Dean didn’t care her ambitions or feelings. They introduced Rory’s father Christopher as a handsome, cool and successful man who was enough to be a partner of Rory’s mom. However they made Christopher live with a chick girl during he kept meeting Rory and Rory’s mom regularly and the chick girl was pregnant. And they made Rory like an angel when she went to her high school. Then they made her give up to go to Harvard and be away from Yale and she had sex with Dean after Dean became a husband of the other girl. Those writers were just mean to their characters

I think one of the things I love the most about GG is how realistic it is. Rory had everything she needed to have the "perfect" life but she still struggled and ended up being lost and confused at 32...thinking back to easier times. I related SO much to that. As for the love triangle...Jesse was always my favorite character. He was pretty much the only one who grew and changed over time....Luke too. ❤

Jess, dean and Logan. All good boyfriends to Rory in their own ways. Comparing Jess to dean and dean to Jess is a very different conversation. Jess was the “bad boy” but he had a soft spot for Rory. Dean was the supportive boyfriend, as well as Jess. They were two totally different people. Jess had more pressure and dean LOVED Rory. Dean was much more stressed but Jess more pressured. They were two people, some same qualities but different views. Logan was perfect in a way for Rory. Rory grew to adapt to her grandparents lifestyle and Logan was in that way already. They both had similar personalities. They all had a good match and in the end, Rory chose Logan.
For a single second though I would not portray dean as the worse boyfriend. Jess if anything was the worse boyfriend. That’s a whole different conversation.
Who does anyone like more? Dean? Jess? Or Logan? :)

He never forced Rory to get intimate which jess once tried, jess left Rory without any explanation, whereas logan actually wanted to marry her post her graduation, and Rory actually liked the money and luxury which logan had.

Was she more compatible with Jess on a certain level? Sure, but Rory was someone who needed someone with wildly different views and tastes in her life because it challenged her in a whole new way other than just intellectually. She was so enmeshed with her mom and grandparents, it was refreshing to see her interact with someone that didn’t just fit neatly into her long term plans. Besides, deep down she longed for something completely different, not a more rebellious version of herself. Idk if any of her love interests was "the one" but I preferred who she was becoming while with Dean than Jess

Jess was just the bomb. He was troubled understandably, he had two parents, neither of whom seemed to want to know him (at first), and it messed him up. But Luke givinv him stability and a decent role model sorted his ass out. He always had the potential, he just needed the support of a good parental figure.
By the revival hes an infinitely better person than Rory. He knows the value of hard work and she's still trying to sell the child prodigy angle despite being an average adult and wondering why she isnt being praised. Her mother and her grandparents set her up for failure, despite being loving, but shes an adult and should hold herself responsible now, like Jess does.
Paris was always the best example of what actually working hard looks like on the show, and lo, she's a succesful fertility doctor.

It’s just funny that with Dean, Rory was going far away for college but by the time Jess comes around, she’s staying in CT.

Jess had trauma to work through and maturing to do. In the movies, he seemed to have progressed beautifully.
I don't love the idea of suggesting that Rory -or any woman ever- has to end up committing to any one man. Marriage is not a requirement nor a symptom of success. Rory is a whole, beautiful, capable person all by herself.
That being said, of her three main love interests in the series, I pick Jess every time. (And I've seen the series all the way through about 7-8 times.) He's smart and ambitious like her. He's confident but not arrogant. He's a bit rough around the edges, but he's actually sweet and well-meaning. He's witty, creative, industrious when he wants to be, and can keep up with Rory's intellect and sense of adventure. He cares about Jess enough to want what's best for her, even if that means them being apart. He just needed to grow up and work on himself, and he did.

I feel like the longer they’re together the more Dean gets scared. They break up for nonsensical reason and he realizes that this relationship isn’t permanent so when they get back together, he acts scared for the rest of the relationship when initially he was just himself and they were just them. It eventually pushes Rory away because she also knows that this relationship isn’t permanent and there will be other boys. Her fear is more that she’ll stay for the sake of staying. It’s why she can’t break up with Dean when she knows she likes Jess.

You know no one of them was the "perfect" fit for Rory. Rory changes as they did too. Also you have to consider that they are all teenagers here. Though the problem with Jess is that he just treated Rory nicely (sometimes) and everyone around him like shit (most of the time). He treated Rory nicely because he wanted to HAVE her. That's a difference and not good in a partner EVER. It's just important to point that out for everyone.
Dean wasn't a saint too. Of course he did mistakes, said bad things and was controlling and unsure of himself and with his feelings (especially with being jealous). Again I want to point out that they are teenagers here, most adults have problems with that in real life. Most of the time no one in this series could communicate proper anyway also they learned. I think the show is about they learning to get along with each other and in a society anyways.
The main difference with Dean is that he was nice to everyone in a way and not just to Rory. Also he had his bad moments too.

    jess was the best
Dean was the person she met when she was still at stars hollow high but she and her lifechanged quite quickly once she was at chiltern snd dean really didn’t fit in with that new life
he was slightly controlling and could very easily be perceived as becoming more controlling as the relationship progressed. There are some red flags in the way he talks about housewife’s, gets angry and possessive and the fact he sleeps with rory and disrespects his wife. it’s also a strange reaction to break up with a 16yo girl because she hasn’t said she loves you back after 3 months of dating. This teaches rory that if she doesn’t respond in the way that he expects when he wants it he will punish her. It’s surprising that Lorelie doesn’t speak up on this more.
dean wanted more traditional small town values from the start and rory wanted more plus he is possibly a low key domestic abuser in the making.
it just wasn’t ever going to go the long haul because the kind of girl dean would attract is going to be someone that dean can provide for and feel like the big man around.
jess met her when she was already at chiltern and had harvard in her sights. jess liked her as a friend even when she was with dean this gave her the freedom to explore their relationship on more of a friendly basis to start with not just 0-100. Rory like her mum needs that sense of freedom. Jess gives her that
Jess consistently looks up to rory and holds her on a pedestal. I think jess was willing to adapt to rory’s life changing and therefore would have been the one to go long haul with
Logan was the charming rich guy that we all fall for with the good looks and trust fund looks like the perfect happy ending on the surface but dig a little deeper and you find he is a narcissist just like his dad and ultimately wants rory to marry him and fit in with his whimsical ways so that he can have her on his arm wherever he ends up going following his ties to his dads wallet. Rory says no because it’s not what she wants and he dumps her. Why? because the Logan’s of this world just want a pretty wife to fit in with them and he can replace rory with someone else.
Rory fantasises that logan will come back to her and give her the time and space to marry when it’s right but he doesn’t instead he finds someone else to fit the bill and then sleeps with her because she still holds those feelings for him and he can’t say no because the only person logan truly cares for is himself deep down. ultimately look at the parents if you want to see how the guy will turn out
The gilmore girls is so intelligently written that it has to be based on a true story/ life experiences.

Dean: she will and if she doesn't it wont be because of me
Jess: I want to be with you rory but not yale not stars hollow we need to go somewhere else and start fresh
people are always so quick to pick that one moment where dean snaps because shes been blowing him off to do stuff to get into Harvard and talking about leaving (to another state not 22.8 miles im sure dean looked it up too.) that they miss the rest of the episode where he says he's just upset and loves that shes going to Harvard and completely forget that Jess is the only boyfriend rory has ever had that asked her to leave yale to be with him.
I'm not even team Dean and I like jess I just hate when things are taken out of context. both guys were both sometimes supportive and sometimes not.
