This is the fourth build episode of the series where I install sound deadener on the vans panels and wheel arches to really recuse the tinny sound the large panels make while driving. The insulation is next on the list. This will be an Australian touring van which requires not the same extreme level of insulation as our North American and European comrades. Watch to see what insulation I prefer from experience and how to save a few $$$.

love your vids brother! on the insulation though for the benefit of others intending to replicate same way,... the shiny side utilises radiant reflectics. Radiant barriers and reflective insulation systems work by reducing radiant heat gain. To be effective, the reflective surface must face an air space in order to be able to reflect any radiant heat. Having it face the metal (glue) without an air gap inbetween, turn them ineffective and (without the glue) just extension of the van panel and a heat conductor.
So likewise on the inside it wouldn't work unless there was an air gap? Before adding the ply, or carpet for example?

Hey sorry, I appreciate the sharing of info but I'm going to suggest that this isn't really the best solution. Foil backed insulation is designed to work with an air gap either side, preferably of 40mm. Sticking this directly against your metal panels just adds to the conduction. Without the reflectivity doing anything you are left with EPS, which is not the best thermal insulator (XPS would be better, for example). On your ceiling, you could use an air gap of around 10mm above and 5mm below the foilboard in order to get some benefit from the silver layers. I wouldn't normally say anything but I think labelling this the 'best insulation' is misleading. All the best anyway.
Yr right. No need to glue too. Foil board is so light taping with insulating tape on the sides does the trick for ceiling and use spacers on walls. He did a good job though. Like the deadening on the walls.
Hah, I almost write a comment for the same thing. That foil won't reflect any heat, mate (Heat Transfer ME401). If it is flipped 180 degree, it can be a moisture barrier and reflect the heat back in the winter.

Same opinion, I wonder if adding the poly first then the board would be better as it’s lower density and won’t absorb the heat as much.

Solid advice mate! The polyester doesn't hold moisture is another important point, whereas other types need an air-gap to ensure air flows around it and removes moisture. Not really possible in a van build a lot of the time.

For my Ford transit, I am NOT going to reroute the Ford wiring loom leading to the back. it’s really not needed. Ford did that so that you can have access in the event you need to maintain that system. So I’m just going to create a race track for it at the top corner on the driver side to accommodate that loom in the event that I need to get to it.

Great video mate, thanks for all the content. We just got a transit and are trying to wrap our heads around the insulation (and the 27,000 other things that we need to consider). We're building it in France, to live in throughout Europe; you think your system would be equally as good here? Don't suppose you have advice on vapour barriers? Cheers.
Sounds great! I'd say the insulation would be sufficient but there is not reason you cant add a little extra if you like. I probably would instal a vapour barrier if i were to build a van in Europe. The wetter and cooler climate would make a lot more moisture than here in Australia. In New Zealand we use 2mm flooring underlay as a vapour barrier which also doubled as a bit of extra insulation as it is 2mm of foam with a foil backing and is water tight. Good luck on the build!

Hey man just bought a 2016 transit similar to yours, building it out in Adelaide, great video so far, I'll watch more for great ideas I've slept in it bare a few times the cargo area stays quiet cool so I'm thinking thinner insulation, with a little heater and a refrigerated aircon
That's awesome. From what I have seen so far they are great vans. I agree I think in Australia the 1/2 a foot thick insulation is a massive overkill. I have also installed a diesel heater (video to come) which is plumber into the diesel tank and it is great! pumps out some serious heat.

@@lukemckee9772 I'm not going to add any refrigerated cooling. With the exhausted fan on and the window near the bed, it draws a lot of air and will cool the van. I'm ok sleeping in pretty hot places as I've lived in the tropics with no AC. Ill add a 12v dc fan too to the mix.

going to follow this exactly for my insulation! how many foil board sheets did you need?
I think it was 2 in the floor, 1 for the walls then another 2 or 3 for the roof so a total of 6 i think

Get the long snappable razor blades. Makes sure you use a brand new one and it will cut like butter. Use a straight edge to get nice clean cuts with no mess.

Hey mate with the poly stuff where you at all concerned about it getting damp? I know you said it wont rot but would mould be an issue with condensation? Or am i thinking too far into it lol
Im personally not really concerned. The age old debate if insulation requires a vapour barrier or not, In my opinion from what i've noticed is that in the climate we live in it's not necessary. Wood also breaths so the moisture, if any, doesn't get trapped behind the walls like you might think. If you maintain good ventilation when sleeping and cooking you will minimise the moisture in the van.
Thanks for all your great videos, Vendu and Marci. My partner and I are building our own van and find them so helpful! This week we have carefully installed two layers of foilboard like in your video. However, when we go for a drive it creaks and squeeks. We've made sure it's not rubbing on the horizontal roof supports. Have you had this problem? We think we'll have to pull it all down and try and different glue, or a layer of something spongy. Any recommendations or tips to avoid squeaking next time around? Thanks in advance!
Hi James thank you we really appreciate the feedback. Sorry to hear about your insulation debacle. I didn’t experience any major squeaking I can recall, and if I did it has defiantly settled and disappeared now. What contact adhesive were you using? And did you apply it liberally? I have used some pretty ordinary contact adhesives in the past. Some are only made for paper and cardboard for things like clip boarding. The kwikgrips one I used I have found to be really good. If you cover the whole sheet on both sides it should be like one sheet with no movements or room to squeak. The other thing I might suggest is to fill around the gaps with some filler foam to stop any movement. Let me know how you go!
@@SALTYVANVENTURES Thanks for the quick reply! We used Sika brand spray adhesive on some panels and Sika Contact Fix on others. We thought we were using a lot but if I could go back I'd use even more. We've managed to reduce the squeaking alot by carefully pulling down a few sheets and reinstalling them, trimming and masking edges that rubbed when the car moved and applying Sikaflex Pro to some of the joints. We're yet to use spray foam but might give that a go too. Fingers crossed the last few squeaks disappear with time! Thanks again for your videos and suggestions.
Hey mate how did you go with the squeeking? Also do you just hold the foilboard to the roof for a few mins while the spray adhesive dries and thats enough? I have put sound deadener on the roof but not the foilboard yet. I also had squeeking when i drove my van but only really have the flooring down, im hoping it was just some of the loose timber i had in the back making the noise
@@jamesdettmann1755 The squeaking eventually stopped. We drove around in the back listening to find the worse spots and replaced them. The squeaking seemed to occur where the corners of the foilboard rubbed against the van and where poor adhesion allowed the pieces of foilboard to move. I recommend propping a sheet of ply or similar up to hold the foilboard in place while the glue sets - we used tent poles. Use the best spray adhesive you can find. If we did it again though, we'd look into alternatives that don't squeak. Good luck!

How did you find the sound deadener quality? I missed out on the mk8 transit so I'm sticking with my mk7 now and watching this is giving me a kick in the arse! I was looking at the sound deadening and closed cell foam from a company in Victoria (i won't mention their name) and the price is way out of my price range. So I'm very interested in what you used. Have you ever used the closed cell foam? I was going to go that way and use the polyester as you have.
At least I don't have the problem with that wiring loom running all the way outside the wall like a mk8, what a nightmare! :)
The sound deadener has been amazing so far. Honestly i don't think you would notice the slightest difference between the cheap and expensive stuff. The stuff i bought was cheap off ebay and it super quite while driving. And I only covered about 40% of the panels with a heap left over. I haven't used the closed cell foam myself as a sound deadener so i cant comment on that front. I did use it however as insulation on a window in our hiace van that worked well. Worked well to black out the window. I would advise not to spend too much time and money on the sound deadener as in my opinion i don't think it really makes a hug difference anyway once all the walls are up.
@@SALTYVANVENTURES Thanks mate, that's what I was hoping to hear, it all the sound deadener looks so similar, but you can pay 2/3 times as much as the ebay stuff for a brand name product!
I'll order some and I'll get a roll of the 10mm closed cell foam and see what the quality is, I want to use that for thermal insulation. Keep it coming!!
Hi Can you please tell me the quality of ply? can I use a standard CD grade or do I need to use a Structural CD grade? Thanks for the awesome information in all your vids
I used CD non structural ply. Its not the bets quality but far cheaper than other grades of ply and the price adds up quick. Structural ply is required for buildings where specific certifications are required as they are quality controlled and strength tested. Not required ever in a van.
You cant installe it "backwards" but it doesn't matter. Both sides are reflective foil. Green is antiglare for jobsite safety

It's great to see you taking care in all aspects, rolling over all your stuck on insulation, ensuring air gaps etc but PLEASE for the love of God, just buy a few cable connector strips instead of soldering over a 100 wires 😭
Haha the only way i would be satisfied that the connection was going to last was to solder it myself.
mate, those bloody wires!! i haven't seen anyone mention them before. Iv just started my conversion and have been trying to think of a way to move them. FFS. Might just take it to a pro., or find some way of hiding them. Thanks for mentioning though, they are guna be huge headache. Good work

Yeh I couldn't find any information anywhere about what anyone else had done so I thought people would get some use out of it. If you are going to use quite thick wall insulation, you may be able to get away with not having to hide the cables though and just leave them on the outside. I didn't have that option with the insulation I wanted to use.

I got a loom from a wrecker so all the wires were already the same size and the same colors. I'd recommend it if attempting to do this.

It’s going well. The only downside to this fan is not being able to run it fully when it’s raining. Light rain it can handle as you can crack it open enough not to let water in but still enough to exhaust but heavy rain you need to close it. Can be a bit annoying sometimes a other than that it’s been great and worth the savings
As a pure spectator at this point is there any value in using the cubby holes along the roof edge or is it just too hard to incorporate it into the build.

Just a nice sharp razor blade. Get the long retraceable ones, not the shorter stanley version so to make sure the blade is longer that the board it thick

Hi, I didn't buy it from Bunnings as they don't stock it. I purchased it from a insulation warehouse in Brookvale. Can't remember the name of it but any good gyprock or insulation shop should sell it.

Firstly, I’m a little concerned you chose a Transit. Their engines aren’t the most reliable out there. Make sure you maintain it fastidiously! I have many years in the transport industry and they don’t have a great reputation here. More recently I was told by a Land Rover mechanic that the Transit engine went into the Land Rover Defender as well and doesn’t have a great record. This was as I was picking up an old engine and dropping off a new one…
Secondly, what kind of temperatures are you talking about here? Snowy Mountains, Tasmanian Central Plateau or more coastal locations? I’m interested in doing everything in this beautiful big country. I’m only separated by a small moat from Victoria.
According to the company it does not make any difference if the silver side of the foil board is facing in or out.
Did you use Vapour barrier on this build?
No not on this van. I did on my New Zealand van where it is a much wetter climate compared to Australia.
Did you have any squeaking problems with the foilboard?

Re noise ,everyone forgets the most noisy part of a van when driving; the footwell next to your seat.
Silver facing out on the foilboard will do sweetfa if up against the shell of the van.
15mm of foilboard in Oz??? Seriously?
1.5R insulation when 6.0R costs only a few bucks more; the reason you were toasty in the front of the van whilst condensation was on the from windscreen was because of.... you! The average person expels over a litre of water whilst sleeping.
That rear wiring being on the outside is a shit;; Mk7 transits and prior it’s in the recess. Feel your pain cutting and reconnecting those 60+ wires.
I was actually planning on using the remaining sound deadener I have in the cab, in the doors and under the seats when i get around to it. I've only used 15mm foil board around the East West bed configuration to get the maximum width. Then glued 5mm ply over the boards. Sacrifices need to be made to get my long legs in the bed! The rest of the van will have 30mm and polyester insulation. More than enough I've found in the past. With the low R rating of the polyester, it really is enough from what I've found plus I preferer it much better than a lot of other products with higher ratings as it doesn't absorb moister, doesn't rot and isn't irritant. Yes in NZ the windows in the back were not frozen because of our condensation but the proof is that we were not freezing cold like out buddies next to us in the same van with zero insulation. And where this van will go in Australia wont be as cold as the NZ winter.
Will this insulation be warm enough during winter in snowy mountain??
Yes i believe so....well it depends on what snowy mountains you are talking about. Australian snowy mountains yes. We used the same insulation in our NZ van and that was cold and icy and we were happy with the insulation we used. Canadian snowy mountains, probably now. I've also installed a diesel heater that works amazingly in the cold!

Vapor barrier?
I didn't install the highly controversial vapour barrier no. I don't really think it's necessary as long as the insulation you use does not absorb moisture it wont get trapped behind the walls. Wood breaths unlike some other materials so i'm not worried about any issues.
I'm dreading going to have to be doing the same cut and shove of that loom. What a disaster by ford.

Have you checked the toxins in the glues and insulation? Interior air quality in cans is so important.

I mean its personal preference. I don't necessarily agree with his statement around foil board. If it's glued in, no mater how much the van vibrates its not coming out and it doesn't crumble like that. It's easy to cut with a sharp knife. It may be slightly more permeable to water but that if pretty negligible unless your soaking your walls and roof with water. I'm a believer that you need your walls to breath and that a vapour barrier if not done so carefully and correct could actually do the opposite and trap moisture in. But thats my opinion and many will have different ones too.
Good job,but it will probably be a waste of time ,seeing as you bought a transit.Those things have a great body,but the running gear is absolute CRAP!Gear boxes failing at 300k or less,replacement parts are a f-cking rip off(2500 to replace an injector pump)and about 7000 grand for a reco motor...i,ll put up with no room,and buy a toyota!

No issues so far! We haven’t been running it full time as we have only now just finished the van but it’s got grunt to power our 2000w inverter no problems. Haven’t seen a decrease in performance since I bought it last August. Also chargers super quick, well compared to lead acid batteries
