Thank you so much Mazy and the Vinyl Archivist! I clean my records by hand as shown to me by one of my favorite owners of a local record shop near me and I have always loved how they turn out, but I have always wanted to try a record cleaner, so this was great!! Loved the video!!
I got a Humminguru for Christmas and it has improved the sound quality of my collection (mostly jazz)by leaps and bounds. It even took out a small skip on my 1st pressing well played Led Zeppelin II .
I would argue this machine is so good that you could buy lower graded grails at cheaper prices and they would sound great after a cleaning.
This is exactly what I did. Got a (relatively) cheap solid blue A2-B2 DSOTM. It was trashed. Just pure noise and clicks and pops. Sent it to Perfect Vinyl Forever to be cleaned since I don’t have many records, and it came back unbelievably quiet.
Love this cleaning video Mazzy with beautiful assistant Archivist . Damn it now I have to get the Humming Guru cause I have alot of older jazz records that need that deep cleaning.
While we disagree (glad to see you might be coming around on it though)on the importance of cleaning records I appreciate the video Mazzy. Also I love that whenever the “Archivist” appears she is always a second away from lighting up the room with her smile/laugh!!

Oh Brother. You two are truly bonafide! I got a SpinClean a year or so ago and use Tergikleen with it. I buy a lot of used records and they really benefit from a good cleaning. I do clean new ones but not as long a cycle and just with distilled water. The gunk in the water after cleaning a few is sometimes just unbelievable. I find cleaning them somehow therapeutic.
TERGICLEAN is not good for records and definitely not good for cavitation

I dont have a fancy cleaner, but I've cleaned all my albums since 72 before every play. They all still sound great. I epically clean today's new albums. They are dirtier than some used albums I have bought. Thanks for posting.

Hi Guys I got the Guru as one of the kick-starter investors because I truly believed that the product offered such a great value proposition. It does the job very well, maybe some of the esoteric cleaners have the edge but it's not by much I'd wager. I quickly realised that to get the best from this machine use tepid (Not cold) pure water, a shot of Ilfotol for breaking surface tension or wetting the record and a tiny drop of 99.99% pure Isopropyl alcohol to help break down oils such as finger marks etc. Once I found the right mix It has been consistently brilliant. Im not going to wax lyrical about how records sound. It's just that the noise floor is improved, allowing the recording quality to show itself at its very best. That's all there is, really. I am convinced that once cleaned and stored to proper archive sleeves, they really don't need much after that except maybe a de-stat now and again. I also figure that clean records help with lifespan of expensive MC Cartridge styli as well as probably logically extending the life span of the record itself. Great little video I enjoyed the martini masterclass also and learned something about making them properly so thanks.
One day I may extol you with tales of cleaning records in the early 1990s in the Library of Congress, but for now, I’m glad to see you and Amanda spreading real information. I wanted to say, although your video on sleeves was right on, my wonderful boss at LC who recently deceased always bought us Nagaoka sleeves by the many thousands directly from the manufacturer in Japan. They can be had on Amazon, but when we got them in mass quantities, they came in wonderful heavy cardboard carrying cases with handles that could be used for taking nice batches of LPs to friends’ houses, so one was never ambling down the street with one’s records like your bud Todd, who seemed to risk them sliding out of his hands and them getting damaged on the asphalt. They aren’t stiffened with paper like the sleeves you spoke of, so they were much cheaper. Just watching you standing in front of your record shelves gives me flashbacks, and this video had an even more profound affect in that respect. I always took preservation seriously, so remembering and knowing what the challenges and nightmares there are involved with all this brings out my PTSD, and I left LC 28 years ago almost to the day. Namaste. ✌

I have got a Dutch Okki Nokki for about four years now. It's quite a heavy machine but I'm still very pleased with it. It improves the clarity of the sound, so I also clean new records. The downside is, it takes a lot of time and my wife says it's way too noisy. I need about an hour to clean 4 records and the vacuum sounds like a jet. But hey, it's part of the vinyl ritual. The ultrasonic is a good tool to have. I have many hundreds of second hand records and I hand clean, and vinylvac first, then ultrasonic. I also rinse and vacuum again. This gets the barn off almost any record. This takes time... time to martinis with music well spent!! Cheers Mazzy!!

I'm a moderate on cleaning - do once and then look after - but certainly there are instances where the improvement can be quite noticable, one personally being thinking about getting a replacement Eat The Beat that after cleaning my original UK up, that was so good I just scrubbed that idea!
For those who may be wishing to use a record cleaning machine, it may be worthwhile seeing if there are other music fans in your district who may be prepared to share a machine for a mutually agreeable exchange, a payment or drinks offer as a means of both drefraying costs and getting enough to get a good number of discs to clean in a single session to wake it worth everyones worthwhile.

I got a HumminGuru last month and my experience is that the cleaner, well-kept records do sound a bit better, but the worn out discs end up sounding even worse off. It seems like the wear and tear is even more accentuated. All of my records have been cleaned before on a VPI 16.5 but I do notice the filter getting dirtier the more discs I run through. The big plus on the good records is how they sound more dialed in after a run through the HG.
I've been buying LPs since 1980 and if the vinyl is cleaned with a duster on the turntable, there's no need to do anything else. If you have dirty LPs then fine but I would just keep them from needing a deep clean in the first place. And I suggest getting a copy of Talking Book without clicks or any other noise!
Yeah that's right, just move the dirt and dust around and spread it all over your record deck as well 👍

@@shelleylyme6402 Martin didn't say exactly what he meant by "a duster." (Perhaps he has an arm-mounted one, although those are rare.) You won't spread much dust if you use a carbon fiber brush before each play & return the disc to a ricepaper sleeve.
I used a spin clean before and recently got a humminguru. I like the guru because you can walk away from it , the spin clean not so much. I enjoy bourbon while cleaning generally but the occasional gin and tonic with Hendricks. Cheers

Thanks for the demo. That machine is a little over eight hundred bucks up here in the great whit north. I just bought a Disco Antistat cleaning machine. It's manual like Spin Clean. I'll let you know how it performs. Cheers.
So far I'm a 99% isopropyl alcohol and distilled water dude (for reasons of affordability) for my $1 thrift finds and/or collections of varying cleanliness that I've acquired simply by being the family/friend vinyl dude. After a few records go through, I can see an eventual danger of a TergiKleen swirl in the Nick & Nora glass, followed by accidentally adding drops of Hendrick's into the distilled water...followed by lots of Sylvester the Cat slurring: "thuffering thurfactant, did you puth Hedrith in the 'guru'? ...followed by much confusion as more and more VC members randomly show up at the door. Oh, the future of vinyl IS women in vinyl (I need to get that top for my sister's upcoming birthday). Entertaining video Mazzy. Maybe I will be a future 'guru' as well.

Best tube I've watched in awhile and I laughed out loud when you made the porno comment because I was thinking the same thing with the staged and bad acting for very obviously setting up the scene. Greetings. There are disagreements now about adding a surfactant like Tergitol or TurgiKleen. As Michael Fremer comments below, he feel only distilled water should be used. Others feel differently and the Library of Congress has been adding a surfactant at least up until 2018. Have things changed since then? There still seems to be differences of opinions today. I am hoping to add an adjoining discuss on the channel soon.
in general from a scientific process perspective, cavitation is clearly aided by the presence of a surfactant. The role of a surfactant is to reduce surface tension. When surface tension is reduced, cavitation levels increase. Remember cavitation involves the creation of bubbles which requires breaking of surface tension. So lower tension means more bubbles, and more cavitation. Distilled and deionized water have higher surface tensions making cavitation more difficult, making the use of a surfactant in fact more valuable.
How to handle the surfactant safely (as with all chemicals), which surfactant is most suitable for vinyl ultrasonic cleaning, and so on, are then supplementary questions to this.
I dont see Fremers comments that state distilled is better. Only one single comment. Did he backpeddle again Mazzy?

Get ya on that! I find my records everywhere. Maybe that was the "barn records" reference I guess(?). I'll scrub with wet cotton pads, then Spin Clean, then "Squeaky Clean" (a 3D-printed wetvac-attachment system).
Have a Project vacuum record cleaner. When it is dirt and dust, it mostly helps. No experience with an ultrasone cleaning device. It is always good to try, you never know.

Got mine a week ago and use their surfactant which results in a 5/5 cycle with absolutely no water left over. Realistically, people buying this machine start out with above average records most of the time and probably have a wet/dry step they do for the dirtiest ones. It really, in my case at least, does a great job. Chasing silence 😂 is fun. Like getting Hyman Roth in the airport. Difficult, but not impossible. 😊😊
Okay..I advocated this forever, now go the next step and clean a new record (A Tone Poet) and see just what it can do, it will take 10 minutes of time to clean
I’ve many grail records found in the wild that could certainly benefit from a cleaning on the HG as did the Talking Book LP. I’m happy to know I don’t have to drop 2k or more to achieve a satisfactory improvement in sound. Once again happy hour proves successful. Clean records are happy records. Though I know it will never happen, I think Fremer owes "The Archivist" an apology. Having been part of the National Center for Film Preservation for over a decade in a previous century, I'll take my archival advise from professionals at the Library of Congress (despite the fact I knew a couple of them) and other similarly trained individuals, such as your co-host for this video (the guy from the street...not so much.)

Seems great! That price is doable, the other ones are crazy expensive. Do the drums sound better on the mono sgt. pepper? Aren’t they planned to the left or something on the stereo? Where do you prefer the drums to be when listening to an album?
Drums sound good. Where ? On stereo it depends on the album for me, but on psychedelic records I love them to float around. But this in mono rocks more in places. Just different experiences

I clean the record before I play it, and try to put it away just as soon as it's done playing. But here is the rub: static. I am a great believer (and user) of isopropyl and surfactant (Ilford brand from a camera shop for me-darkroom people are even more insane about their chemicals than audiophiles). But where does the static come from? And how do you eliminate it?
You can play the record 'wet' and that works. Yet.... I can have pretty F**king Clean records and still... static! Or play the Get Back Glynn Jones LP out of the box 5 times... and static!
Decades ago I talked with a guy working at a great used record store in Nanaimo B.C. He was cleaning a stack of LPs as he worked the shift. I still remember him saying "I really lean into the record grooves when I clean them." And I could see him doing it. This was before micro fibre. Just a clean face towel. Then, much more recently, I heard someone talking about putting "mechanical force" on the record to remove static.
Using a microfibre cloth, I've started having VERY good results removing static doing just that: leaning into the cloth and rubbing with force. I have the LP on a round silicone mat I got at a kitchen store. It's grooved, so there is minimal contact with the underside.
I wipe off the record first to make sure I'm not forcing dust particles into the grooves. Here is the part that is interesting. With repeated cleanings the amount of static decreases-to the point that there is no static left on the record. It's still 'early days', but the results have been encouraging. And the LPs are quiet.
The static seems to be most intense on the outside edge of the LP. So where does it come from?
Here's my best guess: from our fingers, when we make contact with the record. I mean, I have them is static free, archival sleeves. And had them for the last 40+ years in the right kind of poly sleeves that I had bought just by accident (I had my best 50 in Angle paper record sleeves with the nasty plastic inside). Records still had lots of static.
That's the hypothesis for now: static builds from our hands. Some parts of the continent are going to be prone to load more static, some less. Applying 'mechanical force' to a wet record until its dry removes the static.
Machines? Sure, they do the work for you. But they are not putting 'mechanical force' on the surface. Are they eliminating static some other way? Is soaking in liquid for the duration of the cleaning removing the static?
Oh, and for a really dirty record... Like a find at a second hand store or garage... I don't mind putting some dishwahsing liquid on it; washing it with my finger tips; rinsing it under the tap; and standing it up on the dish drying rack. Then, when it's dry I put it through the microfibre cloth treatment, with a mix of distilled water, 15% isopropyl, and a dash of surfactant.
Greasy stains or stubborn fingerprints? I use vinegar. Then, wash with the cloth & Isopropyl mix.

Wow. I would have used a Herb Albert Whipped Cream for my first attempt. Way to jump in with both feet. I have a cleaning machine, which has proven useful for my thrift store and estate sale finds. Is a martini a required step in the process? Happy cleaning.

I agree that if it ain't broke, don't fix it when it comes to record cleaning. I have a Moth II (noisy) vacuum cleaner. Sure, it won't clean off scratches but if there's gunk in the grooves, it normally shifts it. My old acquaintance, the Cartridge Man (aka Len Gregory RIP) used to fulminate against expensive cleaning solutions made for the fastidious/well-heeled audiophiles. He swore by purified water mixed with isopropyl alcohol and a few drops of photographic wetting agent (Ilford). Works a treat and no, it has no detrimental effect on vinyl. But NEVER use on shellac!

Mzy I have an og Capitol mono I’d love to run it through that thing. It’s probably vg+ but surface noise. Anyway my albums a pretty fkn clean too so I use the anti stat brush before playing. I’m guessing you do too.

I use only distilled water and I'm satisfied with it's performance.
I'm curious about the claim that Tergitol rinses clean. Many reviewers have purchased a 2nd water tank and do one wash with the surfactant and a 2nd rinse wash with just water. They claim the rinse wash is important but I don't know if there's a lot of objective info to support that.
What machine does the archivist use?

Mazzy, now that a few weeks have passed with the HummingGuru, would you buy it again? Just wondering since opinions deviate on this product and I am torn if it would be a waste and if I should rather save for a Degritter or Audiodesk. Thanks.
So far so good. Have only cleaned about 50 records that really needed it. Improvements on every one. Maybe two really were too scratched to really help. I think this thing is a bargain and for my needs, can’t Imagine goin with something costing 8 times the price. I guess we shall see how long it lasts 🤷🏻♂️

We over here in Sweden have or had (?!) a hifi guru called Roger Sperrling. I remember him from my days studying at Linkoping Tech College (LiTH for short). He had built a disc-washer from a Lenco turntable claiming that “this was the only thing that crap could be used for ….”.
