  • As an organic vegetable gardener it is essential to build healthy soil over winter ready for spring to grow food. The nutrients of the soil come from free and organic ammendments we use. Soil fertility is the most important thing when it comes to sustainable vegetable gardening, and in this video we cover our method of ensuring that come next spring, the soil is ready for planting without having to worry about adding compost or weeding.

Hi there, I have watched your videos for a while now and have been most impressed. Yesterday I showed my wife one of your videos and her comments prompted me to send this message. BBC take a camera down to this young mans garden and watch what a proper gardener does. You have a gardeners world program already made with the "know how" that gardeners really want to know, not just going to a garden centre and spending a fortune on plants to stick in your designer garden. Well done Huw this is what gardening is all about. Regards.

I can recommend using old and disused vinyl banners from festivals, truck sides or scaffolding. It can be hosed down and reused year after year. Often you can get it for free, or buy it cheap or find it in the skip.

Love this growers series. We are on Vancouver Island wit an almost similar climate as South England. This series is very helpful and well produced. What about crop cycling and rotating differing plants into different beds in sequential year?. What sequence or cycle is best to get the most out of soil and healthy permaculture planting? E.G. beets, broccoli, beans, corn, carrots, parsley, potatoes, etc.

We live where we have great river loam soil. We are wanting to built some raised bed gardens where we currently have a lawn. My plan is to use a sod cutter to remove the grass over a large area and remove the soil down a few inches to fill the garden boxes. Then use landscape rock to fill the area of soil removal around the boxes. I'm planing to do this n the fall so that I will have everything ready by the spring for planting. My question is can I just use the loam soil to fill the boxes and then use the method from the video do have the soil ready for spring? Do I need anything else mixed in with the soil? Again we have great soil. Our neighbor has a great garden every year with standard planting (no raised beds). Thanks in advance for you thoughts and input!

Hi Huw, this was helpful. I see different approaches for putting the garden to bed in winter but yours makes sense as it allows for creating a living soil throughout winter. Do you pull your larger plants first, or just cut them off at ground level? I've heard to do the latter, and then cover it with compost or mulch. Thanks!

Very interesting. If I'm starting a new regular ground level garden, could I add manure, compost to the top of my soil, and cover it with black plastic, and leave it until spring planting ?

This exactly what I do on my current small allotment, but now I have been given a part of a field , 6m x50m it's all ope ground and I want to make it into raised beds so can do what you do but not sure how wide I should make the beds, I already have the plastic in two widths 1m and two metre, I will be g owing all sorts but mainly stuff that takes longer to grow like onions garlic and brassicas, as I will be growing the quicker stuff at home, what can you suggest, cheers , Steve

How about just planting through the plastic in early spring? Leaving it there would continue suppressing weeds.

Hugh, could I use a black tarpaulin instead of black plastic? We live in a very exposed position on a south facing mountainside in North Wales, any natural mulches such as leaves would not stay on our beds for very long at all.

  • @plantsoverpills1643

We dry our lawn (converted to white clover,) clippings and add those to our garden as mulch. We also have access to clean horse manure.
Can we add 3” of well rotted horse manure, then cover it with the dried clover?
    OR
Would it be better to add 3” of home made compost covered with the dried clover or leaves?
    Enjoying your channel.

Thanks for the great videos. Just a quick question, I have just covered my raised beds with a layer of leaves to mulch over winter. Would you cover the beds with plastic and should I have shredded them first? Which I didn’t!

The good thing about bunny poop is it’s a cold manure, so you can add it to your plants at anytime. Tomato plants love rabbit poop. I have a bunny that works for my garden too. Another good fertilizer is Timothy pellets. So if your poop has rabbit food too, don’t worry because they will both work to feed plants

Do you ever run into problems with the wood rotting? I really like the wood on the sides of each bed it looks a lot neater than just a patch. But I’ve had a smal raised bed before and the sides started rotting after 1 year and into year 2 the sides kind of collapsed and attracted a lot of bugs that also liked my crops:/. So idk I was thinking of just doing patches with some rocks around as a visual barrier instead of wooden beds.

  • @bettypogor9985

I’ve found I need more sun in my raises bed for next year so I need to move the whole operation. Should I amuse manure now, wait until spring then move the entire thing?

Wouldn’t landscape plastic work better because it would allow the rain to seep in for the soil life? Does the black plastic kill the soil life?
