Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane - the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let's get into it! Cheers, Mark :) - Хобби
G'day Everyone, burning the midnight candle here editing garden beds, and now it's time for me to hit the bed so I'll check out your comments in the morning and answer as many as possible. Thanks for your support! Cheers :)
very repetitive. only about 3 minutes worth of information repeated over and over and over again.
best thing for the soil is charcoal .. powderised . .can't go wrong
Hey Mr. Mark! Your doing great! But this time there was no caption for this video! Little hard hearing for me! But I do read everything you say!
My garden is under 2 feet of snow. Can’t wait to get into my garden when this snow thaws!
@@vward4871 Ditto V , I can't wait to get started again either !!
This guy cares more for his soil than some people do for their children
One thing in common is that many parents let the children eat food that equivalent to the manure that Mark spread in the garden beds.
I care more about his soil than I care about my kids.
Fucking facts!
He did bury his children in those beds
its a universal feeling. Just care. Doesnt matter what with!!
"the plants go into stress, need a drink then are happy for a moment, but then go back into stress and need another drink.." I can relate plants.. I can relate

Lmao i hear him say it same time i read ur comment ahahaha
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣relatable
You need better soil mate
Me, too.
That casual frog toss cracked me up for some reason. =)
Me2. Although I believe it was a toad but anyway.
Me too :)
@@Misterdandamanify ah ok! Thought it was a bull frog. Thank you for correction!
@@yewsengcheong1637 It was a cane toad. An introduced species that is wreaking havoc in Queensland and now into the lower eastern states of australia. There is a bounty on them and in most places you collect them in chaff bags and hand them in to be disposed of humanely.

they're cane toads, an introduced pest. most Australians kill them on sight.
@@adamwest1138 yeah I'm aware. I thought it was quite comical wasn't giving Mark a hard time about it. He had a dog addicted to eating them IIRC. cheers
@@adamwest1138 - that'd be a shame! I value them as they're amazing for controlling lawn pests, like lawn grub moths, lawn beetles, etc.
They might have been introduced, but wildlife has adapted, and they're finally finding their niche.

I greatly appreciate how raw and honest he is about his process and the reality of how hard the work is to maintain a healthy garden. Hard work but rewarding. 👍🌱💚

4:40 "You can always turn crappy soil into beautiful, rich garden soil. You just have to take time and a bit of effort."
Truer words seldom spoken. The key to successful gardening is understanding the importance of soil farming and taking the time and effort to build a strong foundation for your plants.
Funny how a sturdy foundation plays out in live, not only physically for your house to step up on, but also metaphorically for relationship.
True as, "Soil Farming"! Excellent comment 😁✌️
Toad toss, poo cakes, you are always such a delight to watch and learn from!
“Mixing a big cake of pooh” 🤣🤣. Garden baking at its best Mark 👌🏻💜
I have to say, I really appreciated the transition from wide shot to close up when you said “Come have a look!” SUCH a lovely touch, like we’re really walking the garden with you
I totally agree, it’s great!
Been gardening for the last 15 years or so, and one of the things that I've learnt that's changing how I garden completely.
If you don't dig or till soil, and you regularly add a few centimeters of grass, leaves, compost and/or manure. Well, my plants have had like 20-30% yield increase without replacing soil, even though it's been almost 7 years since I decided to start this. The soil is healthier because the mycelium isn't disrupted, and apparently the plants like it. They grow bigger, faster, and with more stuff to harvest each year. Just last year alone, I had 7 large tomato plants, I got nearly 200 pounds off them. I was eating them for months. It's getting better each year. Just top dress 2-3 times a year.
Whenever I mention to people I want an acreage they tell me about how much work it is blah blah blah.
This is the work we should be doing, supporting our own dream and not someone else's. Congrats for living your dream Mark, I'm all for being elbow deep in poop!!
I feel like I can always tell just by digging around in it with my bare hands and giving it a little bit of a whiff. You can really smell the pungent earthiness of healthy, happy soil. Once you’ve handled enough healthy soil it’s very easy to tell just by feel.

This was perfect for me! Last year my beds grew fine, then the growth stopped. I thought it was the hot temps, but I'm sure now it was also lack of nutrients. My soil is old and looks just like the poor soil that you showed. Thanks SO much for your help, looking forward to updating my beds and growing lots of veg!!
Hi Ruth, how did you get on?
Finally I found a video that explains what to look out to determine when your garden bed needs replenishing. For a while I suspected this was the case judging by the health of my plants. I liked how he explains the middle ground where the soil hasn't reached that optimal condition (which mine is) and what to do. Thanks very helpful. I now feel better about what steps to take.
"Like you're mixing a big cake of poop." I'm cry-laughing over here!
Haha. I couldn't help but laugh when you just threw the frog away

Thank you for all your videos!
I have been gardening for only a year now because of your videos and all the happiness you show in gardening ! And now I have that happiness too about my small veggie garden!
Thank you Mark for being there for all of us new gardening people!
Watching gardening with all those greens around you somehow is so relaxing. Thanks a lot for the vid!
Mark reminds me of Alex Jones, if Alex was Aussie and 500% calmer. 😂
Love your content Mark !! Your worms are so lively. They look like they want to escape from your grasp in a hurry.
Did you toss the toad?
That sounds dirty. 😅
Pretty sure invasive species
I have seen very few frogs, toads, no horny toad, no red ants, no crawdads recently.
When I was a kid in the late 60's, we saw them all the time.
But grow a garden and all kinds of destructive bugs come out.
So much for pesticides everyone around me must be using.
I HATE cane toads. Disgusting things. Yes, they’re a pest species here. It rained yesterday and I can hear them outside. A little detail in the accumulated water kills the tadpoles....
@@geekchick4859 do you mean dettol? I have heaps of baby toads here since it rained. I hate them too!

The natural soil here is red clay and rocks. Lots of rocks. A joke from a friend goes, "Q. What do they call 1/2 inch gravel in Missouri?" "A. topsoil." Rocks are the main crop here is Missouri. I keep buckets in my garden for collecting said rocks. And I try to amend the soil here a lot.
It’s the toss of the frog for me😂😂

Warms me up to watch you now since it's unusually freezing cold in the Texas Hill Country this week. Thank you for such great info!!
I'm buried in snow and everything looks dead, so watching Mark I can pretend it's summer for a few minutes.
I'm on lake texoma and this snow storm is wild. Gardening Russell Crowe sending them warm vibes to us at least haha.
Wtf? I thought Austin was the freeze line. Weather don't care this year , I guess.😂😂😂
I was just thinking the same thing sitting here in southeastern NC with the furnace running steady.
Yes, east texas is freezing right now! Laid up in the bed watching RUclips 😊
I'm an absolute beginner, but learning a lot! I have just prepared 2 beds today, so your tips were very useful. Thank you! Greetings from Rio de Janeiro!🤗😉🌱🌿💐
I love my bunnies. They make lots of wonderful fertilizer for my gardens. I add in to every hole I plant my veggies in and mix it in to all the areas I seed. Then I water my gardens with rabbit poo tea by adding a couple shovels full of loo to a large tote then fill it with water after sitting for 2 days I water each of my plants.
You amaze me. How did you get so knowledgeable about gardening? I have been binge watching your videos. You have a good sense of humor and so enjoyable to watch.
I learn so much watching your videos. Thank you, sir.
Thanks for the video. I've already started my seedlings for this year, but since I don't have a garden, I guess I gotta beautify my neighborhood with some veggie and flower containers 😊
I live in a apartment building, i use rectangular garden pots to grow basil, oregano, chives and recently cherry tomato, plus im making a mini compost. Just look for a good sunny spot in your house and use a small table for a better access to place your pots and seedbed.
Vertical garden maybe 🤔 do you have a wee porch or balcony? the other comments idea is fantastic too!
You give the old saying love a good shit stirring a new meaning 😂
Admire the life an no nonsense laziness in this man ,he is so helpful to us all thanks friend.
I am soooo very happy that I discovered your channel. Especially, because I live in the Karoo, Western Cape, South Africa. Our climate in the Karoo is actually defined as a desert climate and obviously we are in the Southern Hemisphere. So watching this, just takes away some of the extra thinking and calculating that comes with e.g. looking at British garden shows. It's just really not nearly parallel. Nor is Australia, but there are definitely more in common.
Hi Janine, try some gardeners based in Southern California if you can, it's also very dry climate and might suit you! I'm in Brisbane and I often watch stuff from Florida for the same reason :)
This video is perfect for me right now. I fell into the ‘premium’ garden soil lane and so much of what you said rings true. Thanks for the help and another awesome video Mark
taking "holy cow" to the next level 🤣
I like how Mark just sorta '...nyeh...' the frog away lol
Love your show
Very true about buying “quality soil” my first year gardening nothing would grow in it not even bugs until I loaded it up with manure🤦🏾♀️
@Heloise O'Byrne Where are you based? Wondering if we’ve had that same problem...
I had that issue last year.(new beds) I'll add a bunch of poo this spring and hopefully It does great 💩
I am jealous. I have 2-4 feet of snow outside (the drifts are deeper in places). My brother "shoveled" my walkway with his tractor. I did walk out to my garden today and my garlic is peaking through the snow.
Thanks for using my name throughout the video!
Howdyyawl from the land down under. Good soil is like a good wine, just like wine, you can taste the soil. If the soil tastes bitter or sour, it needs some help. I also use peg magic, a nail or wooden peg on a length of cotton or wool. Hold it over the soil. If it sits still, soil is dead, swing back & forward, its neutral, needs fertilizing. If swings in a right circle, it is positive. Gove it a go. See what you think😊
Hahaha. G’day Mark. Mate, your videos brighten up our day. We have had a hell of a summer in W. A. My veggie gardens are just stagnant right now. As soon as the conditions change my Wife and I will be out there and veggies will go wild.
Nice just watching the sunny weather while we are getting a weather beat down in the uk😅
I feel like I'd be friends with this guy in real life! Such a good guy man
The poor frog! You just chucked it!
Thank you so very much for this video. I'm pretty new to gardening, just a couple of years now. Everyone always tell you to refurbish your soil but they don't go into all of this detail. I feel like you're right here showing me what to do. Thanks again!! Love your videos!
I am new grower and i am going to try some of what you are saying here in Norway. When the snow is gone.
I really want to visit Norway one day. Looks beautiful.
Have you ever tried that thing where you dig a massive deep trench (usually about as high as yourself if you can) and then build an arched roof over the top in plastic and seal it all in to create a greenhouse effect? The depth of the hole helps to hide away from the cold a bit, and the plastic on top (you'd need to put it on a strong wire/steel frame) lets light and warmth in and traps it there.
Then you might be able to grow some stuff down there at the bottom!
Have a look online about such things. Not sure if it'd be enough in your sort of cold climate or not.
I'm really not familiar with minus temps, so I can't say for sure.
@@TheMurlocKeeper There is too much rain here in Norway and it would turn in to a swimming pit real fast. And there are too much snow in winter it would be a cold cellar and no heat in it.
I come for the gardening tips, but stay for them shorts!😅
In all seriousness, I love the channel, keep doing what you're doing.
Cheers!
😂😂😂yooooooooooo why you had to throw the frog like that 😂😂😂 i can’t man

Watching you play in pooh makes me ready for spring but here in NY. it is a foot of snow and calling for more today.
I don't just like your videos, I love them. I'm under several layers of blankets and it's coming up on 5 feet of snow outside, here in north eastern Canada... but watching your videos is really preparing me to throw myself on my garden beds in just 3 short months! March (Ready), April (Set), May (Go!)
I had an old friend who lived Israel in the 40s, on a kibbutz. She told me that they put their raw vegetable scraps in a series of deepish holes in the poor soil, covering each layer with a little soil. I tried that in our clay here in Virginia. The worms loved it, and the vegetables, egg shells, etc., disappeared quickly in the ground. Good for a smallish bed.
That’s the kind of soil I have at present time in my garden, potted and on the ground and I’m glad, I came across this video because I have learned a lot! It’s the beginning of spring season in my area( Southern California) , and it’s the right time for me to replenish and rejuvenate my soil. I thank you so much and I appreciate you for doing this video under a scorching sun! Your passion in gardening is inspiring!
He’s captivating!
Its the valentines day manure special.
No dig is the best bet, constant addition of necessary nutrients, and more importantly micro organisms, through laying down compost at regular intervals. As nature herself does :)
If you're resting a bed you can plant something like Vetch into it and the dig that into the soil when its done to not only stop other weeds getting in but feed the soil.
This is the Steve Irwin of gardening
Bruh....😁😁 for real my man is efficient
Look at this lil bugger!!!
Thank you for the gypsum idea! I have only clay soil and have been working in a lot of organic material, but I will be adding gypsum this spring as well.
I'm 23 and live in a city downtown rn, so my gardening is limited to the containers I can fit on the bannister outside my door. my goal is to get a house in the suburbs when my partner and i eventually get married, and do some raised bed urban gardening! You and epic gardening have inspired me so I'm growing my first tomato crop this year! Just planted my first box with tomato, basil, borage, and calendula :)
RUclips needs a feature to allow me to like a video while it's in fullscreen - I've neglected to like several videos because I was in full-screen mode and watched in succession (and it kinda slipped my mind to pause some of them), but great content! My Mom used to put a foot of leaves on her garden every fall. And she had a "compost pile" sitting on a sheet of chicken wire. The compost pile never heated up but it did attract lots of worms (and an opossum). So in the spring we planted tomatoes and pepper plants surrounded by leaves, with handfuls of worm droppings from under the chicken wire. We had no idea what we were doing but we did grow wonderful tomatoes.

The stuff I bought was premium the first time (2019). Then a gardening boom hit (2020) and apparently now it's not. Gotta churn that stuff out to meet demand, never mind quality.
Thanks for another very informative video Mark. Just a word of warning when adding large volumes of soil/compost/manure to your garden beds. I bought a load of mushroom compost before summer (thinking I was helping my garden beds) and it was severely alkaline. Everything I tried to grow over summer was a failure. Wasn't until I tested the soil with a PH test kit that I discovered the issue. I ended up adding a heap of agricultural sulphur to fix the PH balance. Lesson learnt.
