I came across your excellent review when deciding what to buy after 30 years off bikes. My choice of the Versys 1000 rather than a Ducati or BMW mirrors my experience with sports cars. Everyone talks about bhp and top speed, and the badge on the front seems to count for so much. But what actually matters in normal driving is torque across the rev range, comfort and ease of use. And value for money also helps put a smile on your face. Add in Japanese reliability, and all the features included as standard on my SE Grand Tourer, and you’ve got an unbeatable package. Same reasons why I traded my Aston Martin Vantage V8 for a Ford Mustang 2.3 Ecoboost!

I bought a 2015 model new and put 25,000 miles on it in two years. It is a great motorcycle; I miss it. I was lured away by getting a nice deal on what was then my dream bike, but I still think about that machine fondly and think of all the places we went. Said "dream bike" was a BMW R1200R that has more character and is more emotionally stimulating to me than the Versys was. I've been loads of places on the BMW too but it is less comfortable and doesn't evoke those feelings of wanting to go for hundreds of miles like the Versys does.
I miss some of the bikes I've sold in the past, but there'll be another perfect partner! John

This is such a great review, really detailed and real life feedback. Also great to hear the pillion feedback. My wife loves coming along to bike trips and pillion comfort is a key requirement for me. I had a Versys 650 a few years ago and loved how practical and bullet proof it was. Just reliable, comfortable and fun to ride. This Versys 1000 looks like a step up. Thank you for the review!

One of my most cherished and used tools is my Grandfather’s Black & Decker jigsaw from the 70’s. He past away in ‘95 but I always think about his work bench. When he bought something he had no intention on buying it again. It would be fixed. Great review.

I purchased a left over 2015 1000 Versus and now have over 16000 miles on it. It has continued to run perfectly without a single flaw except perhaps its time to replace the chain/sprockets. I have considered trading to a KTM 1290 or BMW 1250 but I cant honestly say why except to have something new. The Versus is stone cold reliable with the only costs have been tires and oil. Its true the seat sucks and I never get much over 220 miles on a tank of fuel but both are acceptable and not that much of a problem.

This review has convinced me I WANT this bike above all the other sport adventures out there. Of course I just sold my '08 concourse 14, so I'm already in love with the Kawasaki in line 4's. Just know that for you DIY guys. The BMW service light will come on after 5000 miles or so and after you do the oil change, brakes , etc.........you have to take the bike to the dealer and pay to reset the service light........No deal.
Very helpful test. Will get my Versys SE Tourer on 28.April. Tested Tiger 1200, Ninja 1000 SX and BMW S1000 XR . The relation between power and comfort was very important for me (and the pillion) and for me the Versys has the best "all in all package"

Great honest review, I took a 2020 base model out for a test ride with the Mrs as pillion, we both loved it, very comfortable and such a smooth engine and gearbox, got enough power for what the bike is built for, touring and long rides in comfort,
The only negative thing I had was the stock screen wasn't right for my height (6ft 1") I was getting a lot of helmet buffeting, if I was buying it tomorrow I'd be trying the SE touring screen or putting on an aftermarket one. 👍

Fantastic detailed review! Totally agree with your choice, the BMW is an amazing motorcycle! The best tool I own is my brain which tells me to take my motorcycle to the dealership for service before I make the problem worse!
Great in depth review. Most used is an Allen key tool with 8 different sizes: use it most weeks as have to take off the MT07 side panels to fit my ABBA stand for cleaning and lubing. Most treasured are some Shelly pliers my dad had when he drove tanks in WW2 and I inherited. He also bought me a Gordon Sheffield made tool set for my 18th birthday (he bought it early) but he died when I was 15 so my mom gave it me then. 43 years later in regular use plus obviously added to over the years with metrics tools. 👍🏻

👍Many thanks for a great honest review, and as the bread knife is at long last showing interest in motorcycles I think Versys is the bike to buy for two up riding.
Cleaning pistons with brake fluid prior to pushing them back is a great tip.
This really is a great machine for a couple that want to enjoy biking together.
Needless to say, do remove the pads first when cleaning - I was just having a quick look here. John

Might consider this Versys 1000 as upgrade from my Z900 so that I can ride more comfortably with my touring friends.
Starting to be annoyed by my friends that riding R1200GS(A) smirk at me whenever I feel tired and uncomfortable with my naked bike during long ride haha

On flat ground, can even go for sixth gear from stop but have to press more fuel and clutch play. Coz it have more donkeys inside !

Great in depth review. I have an orange 2019 model versys 1000 tourer (i.e. just like your test bike but orange) and I absolutely love it. I agree about the screen and to a smaller extent about the seat. My experience of the T31s are that they're great in the dry and ok in the wet. The bike does everything I could ever want a bike to do, which is your point entirely. It commutes, plays on my favourite road, tours all over Europe last year and does the town work for me as an instructor too. What more could you want. Interestingly, I also own an Interceptor 650 in Baker Express. Hope you like it. David

Interesting to hear from the Tiger owner as I tried a Tiger 1050 and a Versys 1000 back to back and agree, Versys was more refined and faster but for that reason I liked the Tiger more, more character and fun so I went for the Tiger. Also tried a 1200GS but it wasn't for me. I owned a 650 Versys for 6 years and loved it.

I have a large adjustable spanner that was my father's. And I believe he said it belonged to his father before him. I've had it nearly 50 years. Still gets used occasionaly, mainly on plumbing jobs more than mechanicing. I also have a good set of Draper Expert combi spanners that I've used for about 30 years. Quality at value prices!

Funnily enough I went to go test ride the S1000XR based on your comparison with the Kawasaki.
I picked up my 2020 S1000XR about a month ago. What an amazing bike it is.

I have the SE model, extremely happy with it apart from rust on the chain which seems cheap quality and some rust appearing on the subframe close to where the preload knob is on your bike. Might take it back to the dealer when this lockdown/virus calms down and see what they can do.

Hi Kishan, I am planning to buy the versys 1000, but would like to get few things clarified from Indian user,
1) I am planning to use it for touring, did you face any issues with fuel quality/RON rating, as we dont get high octane fuel everywhere.
2)Do you face the stalling issue? if yes, have you found solution?
3) Any cautions/ warnings/ should be aware points that you would like to specify before buying?

1) Yes I faced fuel issue and my bike keep turning off in low rev. This is the issue with 10r too and it's because of fuel, dust and temperature in India. Kawasaki replaced the ECU free of cost and now my bike is running like a charm and with more power.
2) The stalling issue was fixed by replacing ECU of bike.
3) The only thing you should be aware that It's a very big and heavy bike so please make sure you are ready to handle that. Apart from that it's be best bike every terms and go for it without looking for any other option. The in-line 4 sound is the main attraction and believe me it's the most beautiful bike of the market.

I owned and rode a Series 1 Versys 1000 for 5 years. I toured all over Northern Europe twice a year every year as well as around France and UK and it was a brilliant bike. Then I bought Yamaha Super Tenere because I'd always wanted one and I liked them. After 2 years on the Yamaha, I would buy another Versys 1000 in a heartbeat!

I had a 2015 Mk2 Versys, 1000 I have to agree totally reliable after 8000 miles. The mpg in England at English speed limits is brilliant enabling 245 miles to a tankful.However on a ride thru central Spain from the very south to Santander in the north I was stopping every hour and twenty minutes to refill it was drinking it.With an aftermarket screen there was no wind blast at all total comfort.My bike tho at higher speeds sort of wandered a little bit at high cruising speeds on deserted Spanish motorways.Keep your cruising speed below 100 mph and they are planted

Great review! The thing I think you missed is that for folks like me that look at 3+ year old bikes, the cross country reliability of a 3 year old Versus compared to a BMW or Triumph (which I love) cannot be compared. Also for me in my 50s, my legs cramp if bent too much on a long ride. This upright position makes it better for my back and legs than an FJR or 1200 1250 RT. Used 1000 LT SE plus will be as reliable as a new bike at a fraction of the cost. Used Japanese stand out for this reason. Also the prices drop quicker with the Japanese bikes making it an even better bargain.
I am considering buying a Versys 1000 and absolutely loved this review, probably the best one I have ever seen.

@@bennettsbikesocial coincidentally I test rode an S1000XR recently (in Sydney) and it had a rattle in the motor for a few seconds on start up then sounded like the engine was full of loose nuts and bolts. It only had 19000 kms on it and I was assured it was ‘normal’ but it was enough to put me off and stick with Japanese bikes. Either way I loved your review and hope you have a blast on your S1000 as there is no doubt they are a blindingly fast motor bike!

Bennetts Bike well the new GS is much expensive so i am thinking between versys 1000,new vstrom and tracer 900gt
As a current owner of a bike with electronic suspension I would have no hesitation in "downgrading" to a manual adjust next time round. A lot of this electronic suspension is not actually "dynamic" just electronically adjustable. This base model has got to be the top pick in this range. Cornering lights, do they really work? I have them on my current bike, I can't tell the difference even in the pitch dark! Great bike, like the white too. Favourite tool - my old Dads little brass pump action greaser, perfect for the grease nipples on the suspension linkage of my 1995 Triumph Daytona.

@@riteshreddy8597 I'm afraid I'm the wrong person to ask, as I'm rubbish off-road. I also wouldn't really be using this bike off-road. It will depend on the conditions and how you're riding; I'd leave them on, but for true off-road riding (not just poor road or poor conditions), from what I learned at the BMW Off-Road Skills school, it'd be best to turn TC off. But do it with caution and I'd leave them on for pretty much anything this bike is designed for. Cheers, John

I have the Mk1 Versys and the seat is rubbish on that too !! Great for 30 minutes but after that it's not good. Kudos for the '' Wemoto'' stickers they are my local bike shop !!

Excellent review ! Let me share my point of view on that bike. After having owned a Tiger 800 XCA for 4 1/2 years, I decided to go for the Versys 1000 SE 2021. What I like: 1) very easy to drive, I am 5’9/ 5’10, and riding position is perfect for me. 2) Very easy to manoeuver, with and without engine, easier than the T800. 3) Engine is fantastic : very smooth, sleek, no vibrations, “cushioned” noise. 4) Good gas tank mileage. 5) Very good brakes, even when 2 on the bike. What I dislike: 1) uncomfortable seat after 1 hour drive, just as it is said in the video. 2) Low capacity of the paniers and top case, T800 was much better, easier to load. 3) Paniers seem fragile compared to the aluminium ones of the T800. 4) Finishes are not these of a Triumph. A cable moves when turning the gas handle, looks odd. 5) No space under the seat, as the SE uses this space for electronics linked to suspensions. 6) Standard windshield always in my field view: I replaced it with a Puig, which is taller, but when it rains drops of water stay on it, it would require a wiper. And as a adjustment is manual, no possibility to adjust whilst riding. 6) key barrel is located low under the tft display, access uneasy with gloves, I am afraid of damaging the tft screen. Conclusion: I don’t develop any affective feeling towards it, unlike towards the Tiger. This bike stays a “useful” and efficient mean of transport for leisure time. I shall try the new Tiger 1200 when it comes out. I did not go for the GS as I don’t manage to get used to the vibrations and to the noise of the flat twin, definitely a 4 in line is more my type.

Good, thorough review. I'm tempted to buy the SE model. If the front end is diving on you, won't some adjustments fix that? I wonder if the SE's electronic suspension has the same problem? You did mention it, briefly, and it seems, from what you said, it helps, right? I appreciate how much of a motorcycle enthusiast you are, how much you get to ride and how many different motorcycles are lucky to ride! Thank you.
Jedielder Maybe I’m too late to help you make your decision, but I would say yes go for the SE. The electronically adjustable suspension makes things so easy, and apart from the pre-set riding modes and preload, you can go into the system and choose your own settings. And you can do all this on your phone before sending it to the bike. The SE also has the bigger, wider screen, better TFT screen, hand guards, cornering lights and other nice additions. The Versys 1000 is such a tractable well-balanced bike, especially at low speeds. My first bike after 30 years away and despite initial trepidation I have found it so easy to ride. Cheers!

Great review mate really enjoyed it.....i have the 2016 GT 650 version in all black which suits me for my solo camping trips around europe, i am limited for space and bike storage so the 1000 was not an option for me however i am no speed merchant these days so all i need is to sit happily on local and european motorways at 80-90 mph fully loaded ...i will be changing the bike next year and i am on my third versys so more than likely i will stay with the versys simply because they are so comfy and reliable so far :)

@@bennettsbikesocial I'm torn between the 650 and 1000. I've been told as I'm 6'6 and 100kg that I should go for the 1000, but 90% of its use will be for filtering whilst commuting. Yes, wife will go on occasionally, maybe more than occasionally once I buy it, but would the 650 still cope with that? Decisions...
@@RunChatLive The 650 will cope with it, but of course the 1,000 would be stronger. I had a 650 for a year and loved it. I was about 97kg. Sure, it didn't have much punch with my wife on the back and loaded with luggage, but I had one of my best rides ever on the North Antrim coast road riding solo with some mates on R1s and the like! Would you take the versus over something like GSA or Tiger800 as an everyday bike? I looked at a versys SE then bought a tiger1200 and regretted it soon after because of the weight and build quality issues. The 800 I reckon is the better all round and more manageable. I then thought about the versys again but had an opportunity to ride a gs1200 and a GSA. Never ever thought I'd gel with them ( old man's bike, right?). I fell in love with the GSA. Ideally I'd have 2 bikes...the GSA and an MT10SP. Loved the MT I rode but after living with a GSA for 2 years I still can't get over how good the thing is. It does it all and really well plus not silly fast enough to worry gabout the licence but quick enough in the twisties to keep up with the big 4s. Carries loads, wife likes the pillion, loads of grunt, fully loaded, great handling and we'll made. Possibly my last ever bike...not a bad one to end a long biking career on.
I have a 2017 Ninja 1000 ABS with OEM bags. It's a daily commute and has been a great bike. With full Delkevic headers and exhaust it's definitely more SPORT tourer than full tourer. I think the Versys 1000 is my next step. Ready to ride a bit more comfortable and definitely ready for cruise control for those long hauls. If KAWA ever put cruise on a Concours, I'd already be on one. Huge comfortable missile.
You mean z1000sx? In uk they call it ninja from 2019 I think. I had this bike new for 3 years with full akrapovic system and this bike in my opinion is everything but not touring. Good for commuting but anything longer it become uncomfortable. Also bad weather protection. Good looking bike though

great review thank you , i'm honestly torn between this and a Ducati multi. i know the Kawasaki will be a lot more reliable.guess a test ride will make the final decision. anyways my favorite tool is a set square and mole grips that my father gave me ,they were handed down to him from grandfather who were mechanics .

Did 11K on my burnt orange Versys 1000, can only discribe it as good but just not that exciting. Amazing pull from low down but just lacked the buzz I got from my MT10.
If I was doing lots of two up riding I probably would have gone the BMW XR route as well.
I've got a hammer in my garage with my dad's initials stamped into the shaft. Probably my most used tool😱
Have you adjusted the high beams? I am not liking the illumination. It seems to me the low and hight beam are tied together so i can't raise the high bean without raising the low beam

Hi, nice review , How is the long travel suspension ( base model) for sudden pot holes that may come across during ( maybe around 90- 100km/hr) , will it be able to avoid rim bends middle of a tour
You'd have to hit a pretty big pot hole, pretty fast to bend the rim, but any bike could suffer that. Ultimately, this is less 'off-road' than bikes like the GS, so if you're going to pound it hard on trails, I'd look elsewhere. John

Thanks! I got the XR because I don't get to ride it that much, so the more aggressive nature is fun in smaller doses; it's not a machine I'd want to live with day in day out. I would buy the Versys 1000 if I could only have one and wanted to tour with my wife too. If I could only have one bike and rode solo mainly, I'd have a Versys 650. As it is though, I ride test bikes more than my own, so I like to have something a little more daft as my own (hence the XR, a custom Grom and a 1999 ZX-6R). Cheers, John

Have a 650 and as I am approaching the 10k miles/3 years landmark, considering an upgrade but they only have the top spec 18k version of the versys 1000 here now and it’s just not 3x the bike of my 650. Leaning tracer GT or tiger 900... or just keeping the now paid of versys.
The best motorcycle is one that's paid off.

For me being 6' 3", my first criteria is do I fit on the bike as most seemed to be designed with 5' 8" to 5' 9" in mind.

I did a test ride with an Indian Roadmaster. Probably nothing could be roomier. I just have big trust issue with Polaris after the dumped the Victory line.
I also test rode a BMW K1600GTL, nice but I felt I was on top of rather than being integral with the motorcycle. My currenrt ride is a 2015 HD FLRTUSE, the engine has had the cams replaced with high output long duration ones, and is a beast. Metric riders aren't familiar.... it's the heaviest HD on the road with luggage filled and gas, probably pushing 1000 lbs. It has been all over the US on long trips. I prefer twisty high speed roads over major highways. I am looking for a lighter bike that is still good for the same function. I appreciate all the tech that is on the market with suspension and traction control. HD is slow to adopt. I am 71 and don't have time to wait for them to catch up.
Great review...thanks. also reinforces much of my own experience with my 2018 SE. One thing I felt missing was comment on the practicality of the top box set up. Is it still a 6kg max load on the plate and a top box that weighs 4.5 kgs... hence max payload in the box 1.5 kgs ? Any comment on that aspect appreciated. Cheers. Btw I would also recommend the Versys 1k to anyone....you sum it up well. Its a great all rounder for more affordable money than the equivalent BMW / Triumph etc...specced up for touring.
Thanks Paul! The top box is rated to take 5kg - I checked this as I noticed it on the old Versys 650 that the weight of the box seemed to take up most of the plate capacity but Kawasaki seems to have made it clearer now. Needless to say, I have had a lot more in there than that! John

The too box cannot be locked with the key inside as the key needs to be removed to lock it
I just got my 1,000 SE LT+ and am very pleased so far. I came from a 2017 Versys 650 and right away I dealt with a buzz from the plastic frame above the instruments and find the same annoying buzz on the 1,000. I get it in 3rd gear around 2,800 rpm and wonder if others have experienced this and if so what the "fix" is.

I bought a Versys-650 that had a buzz in the instrument box that occurred at 5,000 RPM. It was an easy fix.
Now, my bike has almost 15,000 miles on it, and I've noticed a different buzzing beginning to occur, at around 2,800 RPM !!!
IDK ?...but perhaps the Speedometer Cable needs to be disconnected from the Instrument Box, lubricated, and then reinstalled ? 🤷♂️
Picking up a 2019 Versys se lt+ today. Replacing my Vulcan s. Hope I won’t be disappointed.

Great movie. Have you experienced the Versys 1000 straightening up a lot when braking in a corner (more than other bikes)? I heard that when you increase the front brakes in the corner (for example when You arrive hot in the corner) Versys 1000 REALLY wants to stand up. Is it true ? Was it annoying? I consider Versys 1000 and it worries me

After hours and hours of reviews on versys, this is the top one i saw. There was also another one, but this was deep, thorough and to the point on every important issue. You turned me from wanting a 650 to a 1000. I am a novice rider adn it will be my 1st bike. Which would you suggest? Would appreciate your answer a lot. Commuting and touring weekends. Thank you!!

If you're not going to be taking a pillion much, I'd suggest the 650 - that's an awesome bike and a little more easy to lug about, being lighter than the 1000 and a little more compact. If you're going to be taking a pillion and full luggage though, the 1000 has the extra grunt that makes it more usable, particularly on hilly rides. Having said that, the 650 won't fail! Personally, I'd start with the 650, even if I was taking a pillion. I had one for a year a while back and absolutely loved it; I also took my wife out with it several times. Cheers, John

I read another of your comment that you proposed the 650 so, coming from you, it really makes me happy that you clearly think the V650 is a good choice. Doubt a pillion till I learn really good. Just one more question. I feel I should instantly install crash bars and side bars and extra lights (the grand tour plus ones). Awesome video. I'm purchasing my first bike and came across a 2015 Kawasaki Versys 1000 for less than a 650 with 17k miles. Do you think it is too much for a beginner? It's been about 15 years since I rode dirt bikes
Any bike will only go as fast as you want, but the 1000 is a bigger, heavier bike of course. Try to have a sit on both in your dealer, and try moving them around in the showroom to get a feel for how confident you are with them. Cheers, John

It’s a shame we don’t get this Versys 1000 in South Africa, as I would like to take it for a test ride at least one day. Definitely a bike I would consider buying. Although I have ridden a 1250GS and S1000XR on the same day with a demo day from the nearby dealer. And I can say hands down won’t bother with a deposit on the S1000XR. Maybe it’s because it was a lot more cramped than the GS and/or the engine has no torque by comparison. Mirrors also vibrated alot when I took it on the highway. Still lying awake at night wondering how the Versys 1000 would compare...
Completely agree. I went from a '15 Versys 1000 to '17 s1000xr. The main reason was that the Versys didn't stir my soul. I tend to prefer a more sporty ride ('18 Street Triple RS is my main ride) and I just couldn't get along with the suspension when pushing it. On the other hand it was super comfy as a tourer for my wife and I. I guess if you love the floating sensation of a Buick then the Versys is definitely your ride. If you prefer a BMW Sport sedan, then you might find another bike suits you better.

My GS never returns less than 61.5 mpg really impressed owned a V1 found it screamed had to fit larger from sprocket
Great review, Z1000SX has a bit more get up and go but not as comfortable.
Yeah - I had a Z1000SX a while back; great bike, but just not as practical as the Versys. Had a great tour of Scotland on it though, and did Inverness to Peterborough in one hit without too much discomfort. Cheers, John

It's a great bike but I never see any. And that's because so much of biking is about image, and the Versys doesn't give the right one for a lot of people. Which is a shame.

Very true ! It's strange because they do look pretty smart and do everything well. Perhaps the 2011 launch model got them off to a slow start.....it was UGLY ! But the 2015 onward was a big step forward. I think they'll grow in popularity now...the 2019/20 model is awesome and still much cheaper than equivalent spec BMW or Triumph
