I picked this board up a month or so ago, am 5”9”, 185lb, size 9 boots, 21.5 stance width, and rode it +18, +6. It handles all terrain that I’ve thrown at it - deep powder, groomers, and is quick in the trees too. I love it. Been boarding 25 years, and this is one of my favorites. I’m over 50yo, and after a knee and spine surgeries, I don’t do park anymore, but I charge hard, love to carve, and use all of the resort and this board has been one of my favorites, ever.
Thanks for your take and glad it works well for you.
I have the same specs as you, except I have US 9.5 Size boot so I feel like 157 was a good decision…thought maybe I could do 154 but I trust your review lol pairing this with 2024 Union Forces alongside my Shadowban 157/Stratas
I think i would have liked a 157 and would love to hear how it plays out for you
Crazy good quality vids
Many thanks.
Phew, I recently bought the 154 but haven't rode it yet. Just weighed myself...158. 154 should be fine, I hope!
Thanks for the review. Last year i on a 157 Terrain Wrecker. I found it was a squirly bomber. I was looking for a different board entirely. I'm feeling good about my purchase.
Not sure if the 154 is right for you just based on weight. What is your boot size and height?
@@thegoodridesnow 9.5 boot. 6 ft on my best day
Thanks for making this video! It's of super high quality and definetely helpful. So I'm 6'2 and 200lbs, and I ended up getting a 163 by a discount under 400. I'm planning to take this board to some big mountains in CO and UT, while also practice my carving. I think this board would meet my needs well! My only concern was that if the 163 would be too long for me?
Thanks and no problem. So I can't help unless I know your boot size. Most riders don't know that is the most important part of sizing a board. Weight is a close second and height a distant third. Or hit me up here and give me all the info I need to properly help. shop.thegoodride.com/merchandise/gear-advice/
Hey, currently riding old bsod 165w and thinking about switching to passport 162w. I am 6,4 and 235 lbs. Style of riding is all mountain freeride + some carving. Would passport 162 be ok or I should look for some longer boards around 165-168? Boot size is 12 US. Thanks for your support !
The 162w will fit your boots but it might feel small for your weight and to a lesser extent your height. Hit me up here if you want more detailed advice. thegoodride.com/snowboard-binding-and-boot-advice/
For me, the pop on this is one of the, if not the best I own. I got a 157 Peter Sutherland.
Thanks for your take!
Yeah the pops good the reviewer just had a way to small board
@@cereal_thinker instrument was all I was riding everywhere end of last season. It rips: taking the excavator 54 2022 and instrument Peter Sutherland 157 to japan in a few weeks. I think it’s a great combo for the conditions
@@cereal_thinker I actually rode the 154 and 157. I compared the 157 to the Alchemist same day and the Alchemist had more pop. Like I said in the review this pops well. Just not on the level of the Excavator and Alchemist. It's a very recommendable board.
@@cereal_thinker ??? He didn't say the pop wasn't good, I don't know how you deduced that conclusion. Lol
Hey guys. I rode the 157 instrument today and had a blast. My debate is whether I should go 157 or 160 and if I'd even notice the difference. I'm 5'11" to 6ft tall and weigh 211lbs. I wear Burton 10.5 wide photon boas. For some more context, I've ridden a 162 Cardiff goat and didnt feel any issue with edge to edge on that, I think I may like the increased set back better on the instrument!
I've been wanting to try the passport but haven't been able to lock down a demo but if it's like the BSOD (which I hated) and I loved the instrument I'm wondering if I should just skip it and pull the trigger on the instrument!
Conditions today at park city were hard pack, powder, crunch crust and everything in-between. It was honestly the perfect conditions for trying out a board you're expecting to be your quiver killer. Even did lines I'd never done before or dared to. Loved it!
Just not sure on 157 or 160
The passport is nothing like the BSOD so it might be worth a try in a 160 or 163 if you can get one for demo. It's got a less directional a little more centered feel so if that appeals to you more that is the way to go. I personally liked the way the Instrument turned and floated a little better. If you like a more directional, set back ride then I would just figure out if you want to go up to 160 or stay at 157 with the Instrument. Based on your specs I would have suggested the 160 but you can easily go for the 157 if you like an easier board to control/turn.
@@thegoodridesnow honestly I really enjoyed the set back feel and the float. I think I'll go 160!
Good call!
You gonna do a review of the K2 Passport?
Yes. Coming soon.
Would you recommend the Instrument or Excavator for an intermediate level snowboarder?
Yeah these boards are forgiving enough but it depends on how you want to ride, where you ride, your specs and a lot of other factors. If you want real advice hit me up here. thegoodride.com/snowboard-binding-and-boot-advice/
I have size 14's and so many directional boards options now-a-days and all tend to be wider. Im 6'6" and until boards lost some weight sometime in the last three years i was riding 158's and just poping them all the way back on deeper pow but 6" or under I love to aggressively throw my board around.

But I do got a question. Your description reminded me of my skeleton key and older one hitter. Both burton directional boards that i felt did most things well. I havent ridden anything but jones, lib tech, burton and rome in the last 6-7 years. This one wasn't exceptional but seems like K2 has some boards you like. Put them up with the 4 I listed....actually take rome out. I just love me some katanas and support the company haha. Im Not sure they can hang lately.
Rome makes some great boards. The Ravine Select in a wide model might suit you, but if you want a K2 board you might benefit from something stiffer like the alchemist in a wide size. Instrument is also great if you wanted something softer.
At size 14's your options are limited. Most boards cut off at 12 or 13 so this won't be easy. Hit me up here so I can do this properly and suggest some ultra wides that will work with 14's. thegoodride.com/snowboard-binding-and-boot-advice/
@@tannerk3732 My 2nd board after my forum peter line, was a k2. Have had 20 boards since and no k2's. This is Back when I had 1 board and made it last years. My quiver right now is Burton skeleton key and one hitter. Lib tech hot knife, jones mind expander, yes the y. Im ditching the one hitter and the yes at the ski-swap next year and been putting boards on a list i like and keeping an eye out for clearance sale.
At 5'8" 180 lbs, size 10 boot, do you recommend the 157 over the 154?
Yes.
Looking for a new board for cruising groomers with the wife. I’ve been riding for almost 30 years and know what I’m doing, but I don’t hit the park anymore. Between this and the lib tech cold brew, any thoughts?
Based on the info given it's hard to say. Both are good boards. The insturment is more damp and the BRD has more grip. If you want real in depth advice based on your specs, riding style and a lot more, hit me up here. shop.thegoodride.com/merchandise/gear-advice/
If my daily driver is a party platter 147, do you think ill be ok on a 154?
Based on the info given yes I think it should be pretty similar.
I'm 6ft, 155-160 lbs with a 9.5 boot. I ride the 154 and found it to be perfect fit! I love this board.
Thanks for this review showing what happens when you pick a way to small board it's great for that, as a review for the K2 Instrument not so much.
I rode the 154 and 157. In the future please keep your comments constructive.
@@thegoodridesnowOk so how does this compare to the Libtech BRD
I haven't done a same day comparison but both are very fun rides. The BRD feels a little smaller at 159 than the Instrument does at 157. The BRD has a more set back, tapered quick turny feel and I like it better in harder snow. The Instrument has a better flex personality for riding in all conditions and never gets cranky where the BRD can at times. Both have comparable pop, carve very well, and float in powder. It really comes down to personal preference.
