Very nice, Paula! Gentle handling, clear and consistent commands to the dog. Most instructors do not mention anything about the difference between dog and human vision.

This is great! I get such grief for my distance down hand signal at my kennel club 😁 Most there do a downward swatting motion. My stand is a similar to yours but across my body, like a sweep from side to side, rather than front to back. Also, thanks for the info nugget about distance vision. That is new to me and explains a lot of my Doberman’s behavior. Great video!! Wish I could send him to visit you for some Open and Utility skills development. 😆

I’m glad the video helped. Most important is do what works for you. Good luck in Open and Utility!

And for the recall you can only give one or the other, correct? Either voice or hand signal - which do you recommend? And can you use both voice and hand signal for all other commands - like for Novice? Please advise.

Recall in Novice, Open, and Utility is hand or voice. Hand and/or voice in Beginner Novice.
      Stays are hand and/or voice.
Position change in Open is hand and/or voice.
In all 3 levels recall is voice or hand, finish is voice or hand, heel is voice or hand, jump in Open is voice or hand, retrieve in Open is voice or hand.
In Utility, scent articles are voice or hand. Directed retrieve you can point to the glove, but send with voice. Directed jumping is point to jump and send with voice.
