Lovely analysis. What you missed is that the Heptapod's circular melody and language is from my work "Erin", which Jóhann Jóhannsson requested that I re-record to be part of the score. While I couldn't do that (at that time, in 2016, I was at work on a commission for a choral work, "Murmuration for Chibok" for the Young Peoples Chorus of New York City), I encouraged him to use it and pitch-shift it, as needed. It was not credited on the original film when it hit theaters but crediting was later done properly on the vinyl release and dvds. "Heptapod B", "Teaching Montage", "End Credits" and several other works from the score, make extensive use of "Erin" in both the imaginary language I created, the tune I composed and the fast-moving minimal patterning just before the "Wo - ta - wotah ..." appears. These cues are now are credited as co-composed with me. Joan La Barbara
I thought I couldn't be any more in love with this film. I was wrong. This sort of exposition is so valuable to people like me who want to appreciate art but don't always know where or how to look. Thank you.
Johannsson was on the cusp of being a composing giant. But I'd say what he left us is a small but monumental catalogue. I think his influence will be felt in more ways than we can know. Also Arrival's score should've been Oscar nominated and won. Stupid rules.
Out of all of his catalogue, I only know a handful of his albums - but after listening to them for dozens and dozens of times (especially Englaborn), I can safely say he was one of the most special composers that ever made it into the mainstream... even as briefly as it was...
What a masterpiece !! Music, photography , Directing, interpretation....a perfect circle !! And no Oscars .....! This movie will remain in the history of recent cinema ...like the shame on the academy for their mistakes!
I sicnerely wish the best for this movie in the future - its a gem, one of a few. And some movies, although they do not recieve any awards, stay in memories.
One of the most fascinating films that have blown my mind. I have been obsessed with this art for months after experiencing it. Now hearing this wonderful insight into its score makes it even more loved.
I noticed the way it was composed as well was non linear, and I realized it by ear for the song at the end for the beginning credits scene, only on the second time I ever watched arrival after years… and that shocked me because the music was a direct reflection to the language and how the aliens think
Arrival has been for quite a while now one of the few movies I consider my fully favourite, the music being one of those pieces of art I could only admire without truly understanding it... until this video. While my practical musical knowledge is limited I greatly appreciate your explanation of what for long I considered Johannsson's best work (Last And First Men took the gold recently) and now my admiration for Arrival's OST has once again turned positive from the angered admiration I previously had for it... Jóhann deprived the world of his amazing talent far too soon :(
Was thinking about this film, searched it on RUclips and thought, "why isn't there more high-level dissection and discussion surrounding this movie?" So glad I found this.
Glad to see this analysis of my favorite film and one of my all time favorite composers. Thank you so much for this. The goosebumps were consistent throughout the video.
Johannsson was an incomparable composer. He had such a distinct and sophisticated sound and the way he worked with dynamics and orchestration was absolutely masterful. Knowing that we will never get the joy of hearing new compositions by this brilliant man makes me sad... however he will not be forgotten! Great video! Some of the links in the description don't work anymore but I would love to know more about Johannssons scores and study them... any idea where to look?
I miss Jóhann Jóhannsson. I can only dream of what glorious sounds he would have conjured into existence for 'Dune'. Thank you for keeping his wonderful music alive
Just stumbled across your channel because elf your LoTR analysis trilogy (fitting btw) and your videos are criminally underrated. Your content is great!
Brilliant! Just brilliant! Your videos are now my number one priority, music I love listened from another perspective and put into words is just what I was looking for on youtube
Jóhann Jóhannsson--is dead--but you have to done wonderfully on shining some light on him. Thank you. He is my favorite neoclassical composer. We have lost _one of the greats_.
If Johannsson had lived, we may have ended up getting a Dune movie composed by him by the end of this year :( He composed 3 of Villeneuve's movies (Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival) and had done work on a fourth (Bladrunner 2049). The world lost someone really special with his passing...
Amazing video! I'd love to see you make a video on Interstellar's score, and how Hans Zimmer uses 60bpm to convey that time is running out. Such a simple but genius idea.
I love this score and movie already...this makes me love it even more. Funny thing...I knew immediately without seeing it that it had to be an Icelandic composer and even thought at first it was Sigur Rós.
Arrival may be my favorite film of all time, and I have what I think are a lot of good ones to choose from. :P It's so cool to get a deeper appreciation for the sounds created to enhance the experience. 3:12 I remember the dread I felt when I first saw this scene and heard this noise.
This film has been added to the small canon of films that I will watch many times. I can't add any comments more poignant than what are already written here. I just know what a profoundly moving production it has become for me
I am not sure if it's an obvious or even valid association, but when I watched it for the first time, for some seconds I actually thought that this string music from the beginning was the famous third movement of Beethoven's 15 string quartet. And though it turned out that it wasn't, I still don't think it was a random similarity. This third movement is preceded by a subtitle "Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit, in der lydischen Tonart" which means “Holy Song of Thanksgiving of a Convalescent to the Deity, in the Lydian Mode”, and the story behind this is that Beethoven recovered from a serious disease. So that's actually a reversed film situation where Hannah dies from an incurable illness, and Richter's music does really sound a bit like a "pessimistically inversed" variation of Beethoven's quartet movement.
hi! Your video is great! Do you know where could I find the sheets for this score? I would love to get then as a book. Also, do you have a new link for the Song Exploder: JÓHANN JÓHANNSSON (Arrival Score), it seems it's been down.
@@PentameronSV Ah. This was done within FCPX. I created the score with Sibelius, then added the clef as a single image. Then the scrolling score is several images stacked on top of each other, which I then translated left with a moving shape mask.
Amazing, but I haven't seen the film yet! I know it takes an inordinate amount of time but I'd love to see your take on Sicario music which was another breathtaking JJ score - it's one of the most powerful films I've ever seen and that music was unbelievable in its originality, and now everyone is copying it!
01:22 What's that "8v" line supposed to symbolize and what's it called? 01:55 OMG even more weird notation? :o Arrows from "+" to "o", notes in parentheses… What's the deal with that?

I’m a fan of his Orphée
I always get goosebumps hearing "on the nature of daylight".it was perfectly used in shutter island and in arrival, too
It definitely was - I’ve actually done a video on Shutter Island. You should take a look at it on my channel if you’re interested!
I literally re-watched Arrival years later just because I had remembered that piece of music at the beginning and end of it
RIP Jóhann Jóhannsson, his score for the Theory of Everything is one of my favorite of all time, and Arrival is also incredibly beautiful
That is one truly remarkable score

My favorite sound track in any movie.
God, you deserve so many more views and subscribers.
One of my all time favorite movies. Denis Villeneuve is absolutely genius. Can't wait to see what he does with Dune.
Rise and Kangaru are my favourites in the score for the film.

What I would give to hear you do a vid on his "Prisoners" score...
Excellent !
I don't want to live in a world where this kind of content doesn't have millions of views and likes.
What a sad little world
Amazing video, may I ask where can I find the score pdf for this? Or is it impossible
Thank you! I actually created all of the sheet music by ear - I couldn't find the score anywhere. Sorry that's not particularly helpful!
This movie is also by far one of the best modern science fiction movies to come out in many many years
so cool
Thank you!
Your voice and style reminds me of another channel named Inside the Score. I'm beginning to love this channel!
Thank you!
@@ListeningIn By the way, how did you achieve the scrolling effect in 1:54 without the clef moving? I'm thinking Premiere, After Effects, or Sibelius?

Seeing in the theatres, on the big screen to capture the amazing cinematography as well, with the stereo sound effect...chills.
One doesn't just create one of the best sci-fi films of all time without a soundtrack to match.
Completely underrated film and music😢😢😢
That was a human voice?! I thought that was a whale!
Same!
This reminds me when I learned that Mike Patton voiced some terrifying creatures in some monster flick.
What if whales would be an alien species visiting Earth and.....studying ?!?
Gracias Jaime! jaja
👏👏👏👏
Just listen to Giacinto Scelsi, you'll know where Johannsson got his music from
Someday I hope to really understand what is happening in "On the nature of daylight"
Could you analyse TeneT please?!
01:22 What's that "8v" line supposed to symbolize and what's it called?
01:55 OMG even more weird notation? :o Arrows from "+" to "o", notes in parentheses… What's the deal with that?
I just spent about 60$ on a few Max Richter albums. I love finding new music.
Some of those sounds DO sound familiar. Like Whales in the deep ocean, communicating with each other.
Johansson is the best of all time. Unfortunately he is not here with us now. I pray to Shiva for his other world music composition
the greatest movie of all time
What i find the music is missing ia a sence of tension and release in a contemporary way.
do Ólafur Arnalds next!
Good idea - thank you!
Break down Tenet plz
What Johann died? I missed that....
Rip mr Johann johannsson :(
The all too early demise of Johansson was huge loss for film music (and the music world in general)
Zzzzzzz .....
I would love to hear your take on the Handmaid's Tale music
